Following the opening ceremony, President Erdoğan came together with the Prime Minister, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, Chief of General Staff and the chiefs of higher judicial institutions. Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader was not invited to the meeting. *** People’s Democratic Party (HDP) did not attend the events for the new legislative year, protesting for jailed HDP MPs. HDP Parliamentary Group started the new legislative year with a press statement in front of Edirne Prison, where Demirtaş remains arrested. *** Erdoğan pointed to PKK center Qandil as an address for HDP MPs, due to their absence in the new legislative year opening. *** “We no longer need membership of the European Union… However, we will not be the one to throw in the towel,” stated Erdoğan. EU Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker replied to the statement: “Ankara is trying to put the responsibility of the recorded unsuccess during membership negotiations, to the EU.” *** Turkey and Iran reached a consensus following Erdoğan’s visit to Tehran. Both states consider the independence referendum of Iraqi Kurdistan Region as a “threat to the region.” “Whatever step is necessary, will be taken. We will take action for Kirkuk, as well as for Mosul,” stated Erdoğan. *** Following the resignation of Kadir Topbaş, rumors suggested President Erdoğan’s demand for the resignations of some other AKP mayors. Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek is the most rumored name. Erdoğan spoke on the matter, saying, “That’s not the case for now, but it also doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. It’s nice when one is placed in a certain position; why is it regarded odd when one is asked to leave the position?*** Parliament membership of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Siirt MP Besime Konca was taken off due to the definitive imprisonment sentence against her. Konca is the fifth HDP MP whose membership is taken off. *** U.S. Istanbul Consulate General worker Metin Topuz was arrested due to “espionage” within the ‘FETÖ investigation.’ *** The new Turkish judge for the European Court of Human Rights is still not placed. Former judge Işıl Karakaş has completed her serving period on April 30th; candidates sent my Ankara to replace Karakaş were denied for the second time due to “inadequacy.” *** Academics who signed the “We will not partake in this crime” petition face imprisonment sentences up to 7 years and six months each, due to “illegal organization propaganda.”
