WehadaredbrickwalkwaythatledtothefrontdoorofthehouseIgrewupin.IthadbeenlaiddecadesbeforeIwasbornandhadafewsmalldipsandhumpsinit,butverylittlespacebetweenthebricks.Andyet,somehow,grassmanagedtogrowbetweenthebricksforaboutathirdofthewalk.Gettingsentouttoweedthewalkalwaysseemedlikepunishment.Itwasboringandtherewasnoshadeandthegrasshungontenaciously.Halfthetimethestalkofthegrasswouldbreak,ratherthantheroot,andonlyontherarestofoccasionswasitpossibletoactuallypulloutthefullgrass,rootandall.IsuspectIgottoweedthefrontwalkbecausetheonetimemymotheraskedmetoweedthegardenIpulledupthedaffodilsthathadbeengrowingthereforyears. ThememoryofpullingupthedaffodilscamefloodingbackasIstudiedtoday’sgospellesson.Itissoeasyfortheuntrainedgardenertodestroywhatiswantedinanefforttoextractwhatisnot.Ilikethedefinitionofaweedthatsays,aweedisanyplantthatisgrowingwhereyoudon’twantit.Ialsoliketheadvice,“Todistinguishflowersfromweeds,simplypullupeverything.Whatgrowsbackisweeds.”1Thisapproachtogardeningworksforme.Maybeit’sobviousthatthecharactersintheparableImostidentifywitharetheslaveswhoaskiftheyshouldripouttheweeds. InMatthew’snarrative,thisparablecomesrightafteranotherparable,onethatisprobablyalittlemorefamiliar,thatisalsoaboutseeds.Inthatparable,aplantergoesscatteringseedandtheseedfallsinfourdifferentkindsofsoil–onapath;onrocky,shallowsoil;onweed-infestedsoil;andongoodsoil–andonlytheseedthatfellonthegoodsoilproducedgrain.ThenMatthewhasJesusexplainthemeaningoftheparabletothedisciples.Andrightafterexplainingtheparableofthefoursoils,MatthewhasJesustelltheparableweheardtoday.Andthenacoupleshortparables,almostaphorisms.AndthenMatthewhasJesusexplainingtoday’sparable. Mostbiblicalscholarsthinkthattheexplanationsarefromtheearlychurch,notJesus.IactuallyfinditreassuringthatMatthewincludeshisexplanation(heincludesonefortheparableofthefoursoils,too).IthinktheseparablesareprettyobtusebythemselvesandthefactthatMatthew’searlychurchcommunitycreatedtheseexplanationsisreassuringbecauseitmeanstheearlychurchfoundthemobtuseaswellandneedinganexplanation.Butthat’snottoosurprising. havecapturedameaningoftheparableforthemintheirday,Iwanttosetasidetheirexplanationandseewhatwecanharvestfromtheparabletoday. ThefirstthingthatInoticeisthatfarmerisnotasharecropper.Heisrichenoughtoownslaves,soheprobablyownsthelandaswell.Thismightnotmakehimpartofthe1percent,butheispartofthetop10percent.So,likeme,thepeoplelisteningtoJesuswouldhaveidentifiedwiththeslaves–butfordifferentreasons.Theywouldhaveidentifiedwiththeslavesbecause90percentofthepopulationwaspeasantclass–farmlaborers,sharecroppers,daylaborers,fishers,miners,constructionworkers,servants,slaves,thedisabled,andtheuntouchables.3 Iftheyidentifywiththeslaves,mighttheyhavebeenrooting(ifyou’llpardontheexpression)fortheweeds?HavingmoreagriculturalsensethanIhave,couldtheirsuggestiontoripuptheweedsbesubversive,knowingfullwellthatdoingsowouldruinthecropaswell?So,I’mleftwondering,whatifthekin-domofGodisliketheweedsortheonewhosowedtheweeds–subversiveandunderminingthedominationsystem? LaurelDykstrasaysthattheweedssowninthisparableareaspecificspecies:darnel.“Darnellooksverymuchlikewheatwhenitisimmature,”shewrites;“itsrootsintertwinewiththoseofthewheatanditstoxicgrainsarelooselyattachedtothestem.Theproblemofwhattodowithaninfestedfielddoesnothaveasimplesolution–pulluptheshootsandyoupullupthewheat;waituntiltheharvestandyoupoisonthegrainandcontaminatenextyear’scropwithfallingseeds. “ForthelandlesspeasantswhowereJesus’audience,theeconomiclossrepresentedbyacontaminatedfieldcouldmeanthedeathofachildtomalnutrition.Tothewealthylandownerinthisstory,itmeanslossofprofit.Arichmanwhoimaginesthatsimplebadluckmustbetheworkofsomeenemy,andwhostandstoloseonlyincome,mightnothavebeenasympatheticcharactertopeasants.ForhimthekingdomofGodisanoxiousweed. “Thekingdomparables‘putbeforeus,’instarkrelief,theconditionsoflifeunderempire.Therichrisktheirprofit,thepoortheirlivesandthelivesoftheirchildren.Thefewliveinluxurysustainedbyenmity,scarcity,profit,andaccumulation,andtheyaresupportedbythelaborofthosewhostrugglewithpovertyandconstantvulnerability.”4 Anotherwaytolookattheparableistoask,“WhenhaveIfeltthatway?”Idoubttheexperienceoftheservantsisforeigntoyou;itcertainlyisn’tforme.I’vebeenfrustratedwhenthingshavegonethewayIthoughttheywould.I’vethoughtI’dpreparedthesoilandplantedgoodseeds(metaphoricallyspeaking)forsomeplanIhave,andthensomethinggoesawry.Iwanttocorrectit,liketheslaves,tomakeitright–evenifthatmeansriskingdamagetosomethingimportant.Itfeelslikelifehasgangeduponme,asifsomeenemyhasdonethis. Ibetyou’vefeltthesamewayatleastatsomepointinyourlife.“Whenthecancerreturns,whenthejobgoesaway,whentherelationshipends,whendepressionsetsin,

whenaddictionrobsalovedone(orourselves)oflife,whenacongregationisdivided,whenalovedone’slifeiscutshort,whenwarforcesthousandstofleeasrefugees,whentheworldturnsitsbackonpeopleinneed.Atthesetimes,thesensethatthisworldisnotwhatGodintendedcanbealmostunbearable,andyoudon’thavetobelieveinared-suiteddevilwithapointytailandpitchforktonametherealityofsin,brokenness,andevilintheworld.…[T]hetemptationtousethisparabletoexplainevilprobablywon’tturnoutthatwell.Butcanweatleastacknowledge[therealityofevil]? “And,havingacknowledgedit,canwethenalsoacknowledgethatthisisnotGod’sdesignordesire? “Ihavewitnessedtimeandagainhowdifficultitisformanyofustoavoidthetemptationtoexplainevil–quiteironically!–byassigningittosomegreaterplanGodsupposedlyhasforus.‘Don’tworry,it’spartofGod’splan,’someonesaystoanotheraftertragedy.Or,‘Don’tworry,Godnevergivesusmorethanwecanhandle’[asifsuchhardshipissomethingfromGod].Or,‘God’spurposeforthiswillrevealitselfintime.’AllofthesewordsofsupposedcomfortendupassigningGodresponsibilityfortragedyandbrokenness… “IthinkoneofthethingsthisparablesuggestsisthatGoddoesnotwillevilforus,notinanyway,shape,orform.ThatourtragediesarenotpartofGod’splan.ThatGodnever,everwantsustosuffer.Rather,accordingtoPaul,‘Godworksforthegoodinallthings”forthoseGodloves.’”5 “Aretherewaystofind‘healing’amiddevastation?Yes.Canonebe‘transformed’bythehelllifethrustsuponthem?Absolutely.[Infact,IbelieveitisGod’sdesirethatwefindhealingandtransformationwhentragedyhappens.]Butitdoesnothappenifoneisnotpermittedtogrieve.”6So,ratherthantheseplatitudesthatendupblamingGodfortragedy,wecansitwithourfriendswhentheweedsaregrowingintheircropsandsimplybe,givingthemthespacetogrieve. crop–astheparablesuggests.“Sincegoodandevilcommonlyinhabitnotonlythesamefieldbuteventhesameindividualhumanbeings,theonlyresultofadedicatedcampaigntogetridofevilwillbetheabolitionofliterallyeverybody.”8 Ifthisparablemakesyouask,“AmIwheatorweed?”letmetellyoutheanswer.You’reboth.Weallare.Andourchurchisbothwheatandweeds.Wemaythinkweknowwho’swho,asifonecouldsimplyputastickeroneachperson’snametagsowecouldaccuratelyidentifythem.Ooooo.Weedsticker.Youneedtositinthebackontheleft.Wheat?Upfront,ontheright,please.9 Luckily,Godisnotonlyjust.Godisalsomerciful.So,whilewearebothwheatandweed,whenthefinalsortingcomes,wewillbetransformedintoabumpercrop. IwaswalkinghomefromchurchonedaylastweekwhenInoticedablackberry.Ikeptwalking,maybeacouplesteps,whenIdecidedtogobackandtakeacloserlookatitsbeauty,hangingthererightnexttothesidewalk.Ithoughtabouteatingit,butdecidedinsteadtojustenjoyitsberriness.AndItookthispicture.
There’sapoem,ElizabethBarrettBrowning,thatincludestheselines:Earth’scrammedwithheaven,AndeverycommonbushafirewithGod;Butonlyhewhosees,takesoffhisshoes,Therestsitrounditandpluckblackberries.10 Ididn’ttakeoffmyshoes,butImarveledattheberry’smajesty.Andthatnight,reflectingontheday,IwonderedwhowouldendupcommuningwithGod,feastingontheberry’sgoodness.Wouldsomechildskippingbypluckitsjuicinessandfeast?Wouldsomeluckybirdorsquirreldine?Wouldtheberryjustrevelinitsownberrinessandeventuallygotoseed? OnthewestsideofthemountainsinWashingtonState,blackberriesaretypicallyconsideredaweed.Theclimateis,itseems,perfectforthem,andifyoudisturbtheground,theywillgrow.Andyouwillspendtherestof
yourdaystryingtogetridofthem. Still,theyproducetheseberries…
