Work together in your groups to complete the worksheet.

Take turns reading each paragraph out loud. Then work through each sentence together to highlight it appropriately.

Discuss the possible scores for each paragraph and reasons why before filling out that part of your individual work sheets. Your answers do not have to be the same, but everyone in the group should have a chance to voice an opinion and share possible reasons.

WHICH IS THE BETTER PARAGRAPH? WHY?

My favorite holiday of the year is Christmas. During this holiday there are lots of fun things to do and one is to go to McCall. We visit our cabin at Christmas time. Another thing we do is go snowmobiling. Spending time with cousins is another thing I do at Christmas. On Christmas morning we can’t open presents till everyone is there and later we have Christmas dinner together.

Christmas is a wonderful holiday. During the Christmas holiday my family always has fun. Every Christmas we go to McCall and stay at my Grandpa’s cabin. We spend time snowmobiling and skiing. One Christmas Eve we rode our snowmobiles across Lake Cascade and had a picnic on the opposite shore. My mom met us there with the food. It was fun to sit and drink hot chocolate in the snow. Afterwards we had a huge snowball fight. Another wonderful part of the Christmas holiday is the fantastic food. My mom always makes walnut fudge and coconut cookies. On Christmas day we eat a huge meal with lots of family. My Grandma Sue always makes a sugar glazed ham and my Uncle Scott always brings the best chocolate cream pies.

WHEN READING A PARAGRAPH SOMEONE HAS WRITTEN IN RESPONSE TO A PROMPT ASKING ABOUT THEIR OPINIONS AND LIFE, THE READER SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL WHAT THE WRITER IS LIKE.
