Who is Minerali Industriali?From the integration of two historic Italian

groups – Maffei, founded in the early 1900s, and Gruppo Minerali, active since the 1970s

– a new company formed that today is the reference point for supplying raw materials

to industry. Minerali Industriali (M.I.) extracts, processes and sells sands, feldspar, quartz,

clay, kaolin and olivine, which are used mainly in the ceramics and glass industries.

The company boasts various certifications that attest to the quality of its products, the

protection of the environment and the safety of its workplaces. It is the main producer of raw materials for agglomerated stones

(e-stone), which are highly prized by builders for their durability and lightness. It has a

strong presence outside the country, but its headquarters remains in Italy: it operates

mining sites in Piedmont (including through its controlled SASIL), Lazio and Lombardy

as well as in Sardinia, through Maffei Sarda Silicati. The company’s decentralised

structure, with multiple facilities in various regions, is the result of a strategic choice

based on the importance to being close to the customer, leveraging the advantages that

this entails in terms of customer assistance. An example of this is the presence of a

business office in Emilia Romagna, due to its vicinity to the ceramics district of Sassuolo.

Beyond Italy’s borders, the group has a presence in Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Great

Britain, Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia and Brazil.

Chi è Minerali Industriali?Dall’integrazione di due gruppi storici italiani – Maffei, fondata nei primi del ‘900, e Gruppo Minerali, attiva dagli anni ‘70 – è nata un’azienda che è oggi punto di riferimento nella fornitura di materie prime per l’industria. Minerali Industriali (M.I.) è impegnata nell’estrazione, lavorazione e vendita di sabbie, feldspati, quarzi, argille, caolino e olivina destinati principalmente all’industria della ceramica e del vetro. L’azienda vanta diverse certificazioni che attestano la qualità dei prodotti, la tutela dell’ambiente e la sicurezza nei luoghi di lavoro. È il principale produttore di materie prime per agglomerati lapidei (e-stone), molto apprezzati nell’edilizia per la loro resistenza e leggerezza. Ha una forte presenza all’estero, ma il suo quartier generale resta in Italia: opera siti minerari in Piemonte (anche tramite la controllata SASIL), Lazio e Lombardia nonché in Sardegna attraverso Maffei Sarda Silicati. La struttura decentrata della società, con più stabilimenti in diverse regioni, è il risultato di una scelta strategica basata sull’importanza di insediarsi vicino al cliente, facendo leva sui vantaggi che questo comporta in termini di assistenza. Ne è un esempio la presenza di un ufficio commerciale in Emilia Romagna, in virtù della vicinanza al distretto ceramico di Sassuolo. Feldspathic sand & glass: Angelo Bozzola’s intuitionWhen Angelo Bozzola, the founder of the group, asked

Italian glassmakers in the 1970s to accept a new raw material for glass production, his suggestion was

not welcomed because of the traditional resistance to change that characterises the well-established

producers. It took time, but in the end, the glassmakers were persuaded to introduce feldspathic sand into

their production processes; this kind of sand is now commonly used to produce white and crystalline glass.

La diversificazione come risposta alla crisi economicaOltre al suo core business, l’azienda è impegnata in

altre attività che contribuiscono complessivamente al 30% circa del fatturato totale. Le attività diverse

dall’estrazione sono, per la maggior parte, conseguenza della crisi del 2008 che ha sollevato la

necessità di diversificazione e di reinventare nuovi usi per i macchinari impiegati. La possibilità di

utilizzarli, con la realizzazione di piccole variazioni, per trattare materie prime secondarie o rifiuti

industriali, ha fatto sì che M.I. avviasse un’attività di recupero di scarti industriali non pericolosi sino ad espandersi nella progettazione e vendita a terzi di impianti minerari. Oltre al recupero degli scarti di

lavorazione del granito come pietra ornamentale, un’attività che ha permesso anche la bonifica di

discariche storiche e pluricentenarie, segnaliamo la valorizzazione degli scarti provenienti dal

trattamento della raccolta di rottami di vetro. L’azienda possiede, inoltre, un dipartimento

geologico per la ricerca mineraria ed è attiva nella realizzazione di prodotti innovativi da utilizzare in

ambito sportivo e tempo libero.

Il rispetto dell’ambiente come vocazione aziendaleM.I. è tradizionalmente votata alla tutela e

rivalutazione delle aree dove opera, come dimostrano i numerosi progetti di ripristino e recupero ambientale

delle sue miniere. Non è un caso che la sostenibilità sia entrata anche nel bilancio dell’azienda, nel quale si riportano dati sensibili come infortuni, rifiuti prodotti, aree

ripristinate, emissioni, consumo di energia. La trasparenza è il file rouge della politica di sostenibilità di M.I. che ha

raccolto tutte le storie dei suoi ripristini in libri divulgativi con i quali punta a far conoscere le molteplici iniziative di cui è stata promotrice. Tra queste, il centro di inanellamento

creato in Piemonte che permette di classificare le diverse specie di volatili, delinearne le rotte e monitorarne gli

spostamenti; la duratura collaborazione con un ornitologo che organizza visite nelle aree di ripristino spiegando le

principali caratteristiche dei diversi esemplari di uccelli e farfalle presenti nella zona; le azioni per il miglioramento

della fruizione dei luoghi dove opera, ad esempio tracciando sentieri in boschi spesso incolti.

Diversification as an answer to the economic crisisIn addition to its core business, the company is busy in other activities that contribute in total about 30% of total invoicing. Its diverse mining activities are, for the most part, a consequence of the 2008 crisis that created a need to diversify and reinvent new

uses for its machinery. The possibility of using it, with slight variations, to process secondary raw materials or industrial waste, meant that M.I. could launch recovery activities of non-hazardous industrial waste to the point of expanding into designing and selling mining plants to third parties. In addition to the recovery of scraps coming from processing of granite as ornamental stone – an activity that also allowed reclamation of historic, centuries-old dumping grounds – we point out the enhancement of waste resulting from the treatment of cullet collection. What is more, the company has a geology department that does mining research and is active in creating innovative products to be used in sports and leisure activities.

Respect for the environment as a corporate vocationM.I. has traditionally been dedicated to

the protection and reassessment of the places where it works, as shown by many

environmental restoration and recovery projects in its mines. It is no accident that

sustainability appears in the company’s budget, where sensitive data like injuries, rejects, restores

areas, emissions and energy consumption are reported. Transparency is the common thread in M.I.’s sustainability policies. M.I. gathered all the stories of its restorations into educational books that it uses to try to publicise the many initiatives it has promoted. Among these are the bird-ringing centre created in Piedmont that permits the classification of many avian species, mapping their routes and monitoring their migrations; the lasting collaboration with an ornithologist who organises excursions to the restored areas, explaining the features of the many exemplars of birds and butterflies present in the area; actions taken to improve the enjoyment of the places where it works, for example by forging paths into often overgrown woods.

Ci volle tempo, ma alla fine le vetrerie si convinsero ad introdurre le sabbie feldspatiche nei loro processi produttivi; queste ultime vengono oggi comunemente usate per la produzione di vetro bianco e cristallino.
