Introducing Our Leadership

Dear Friends:

It is our pleasure to present the 2016 Report on Giving — a report that recognizes the many people and organizations across the community whose fi nancial support makes continued innovation and progress possible at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

And innovation and progress were indeed hallmarks of the year.

• The Emergency Department expanded its breadth of services by introducing a level-two trauma program — a vital service that would not be possible without the robust clinical foundation in place at the Medical Center.

• Our cardiologists, in concert with our cardiothoracic surgeons, introduced Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive alternative to open-chest surgery. For patients too frail to undergo much more invasive valve-replacement surgery, TAVR is a welcome life-changing option.

• And, in the company of several hundred friends from across the community, we celebrated the start of construction of the new patient pavilion. When this facility opens in 2019, it will be home to a spacious emergency/trauma center, state-of-the-art operating suites, an expansive ICU, and beautifully appointed private patient rooms. Simply put: This new facility will transform how our patients experience Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

On top of these accomplishments was the day-to-day activity inside the Medical Center. In the course of 2016, with an unwavering eye on the highest standards of care, we admitted 23,236 inpatients, treated 70,439 patients in our emergency department, performed 17,347 surgical procedures — including 362 cardiac surgeries, delivered 43,740 doses of radiation therapy to cancer patients, welcomed 2,362 new babies to the world, and cared for 248 infants who needed the specialized care o� ered in our neonatal intensive care unit.

So many people played a role in these accomplishments: the expert and innovative members of the Medical and Dental Sta� , our dedicated and talented employees, our visionary and loyal Trustees, and a very supportive community of people and organizations who continue to make this Medical Center a philanthropic priority.

There is no question that all of these people have contributed mightily to the progress chronicled in this year’s Report on Giving — and we extend a heartfelt “thank you” for helping us do what we do best: care for the people of the mid-Hudson Valley. We could not do it without you!

Have you ever wondered what your gift makes possible at Vassar Brothers Medical Center? Gerrie’s story is but one example.

First, it was the shortness of breath that concerned Gerrie. Soon after, she began to lose her zip — a sure sign that something was not right. “I’m always on the go,” Gerrie explained. Not only were her bridge and mahjong groups depending on her, but her weekly drives to visit friends and

family were an important part of her routine.

“When I didn’t feel better, I called my cardiologist. Right away, he knew something was wrong. Next thing I knew, I was scheduled to have a cardiac catheterization, a procedure that would help him see what was happening with my heart. He sent me to Vassar Brothers Medical Center.”

Gerrie learned she had aortic valve stenosis, a life-threatening condition in which the heart’s aortic valve narrows, preventing blood flow from the heart to the aorta and then out to the rest of the body.

“This was serious,” Gerrie explained. My heart was working harder than usual to pump blood into my body, putting my heart at risk. I was told I needed a new aortic valve. That was concerning.

I’m 88 years old and this seemed like a very involved surgery.

That’s when Gerrie’s cardiologist told her about a brand-new procedure available at Vassar Brothers Medical Center: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacementsurgery, or TAVR. This is a minimally invasive surgery that allows the doctor to implant a valve through a catheter.

“I was amazed,” Gerrie reported. “This procedure was very easy on me. It wasn’t the complicated, invasive surgery you think of when you hear ‘valve replacement.’ I could not believe I was back to my games and my driving just two weeks later. Thank you, Vassar Brothers Medical Center!”

It was the upcoming appointment with my doctor that motivated me to have my mammogram. My last screening had been four years earlier. I know that sounds like a long time, but I felt I had no risk factors and life just got in my way! Imagine my surprise when I learned that not only did I have calcifications in my left breast, but also — and far more concerning — I had not just one, but two suspicious spots in my right breast. Surprise turned into panic when the biopsy on those spots came back positive for both lobular carcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma. Two di�erent primary cancers and yet I had no risk factors. How was that possible?

My luck changed when a friend introduced me to the expert team in the Dyson Breast Center. I knew right away that I was in the hands of experts and I felt completely confident in our plan of action. A double mastectomy was necessary. The cancer in the right breast required that we move quickly with the first mastectomy; a biopsy-related hematoma in the other required that we delay the second.

The first surgery took place in December 2014 inside the main hospital. I was very nervous, especially because I was aware that I was prone to clotting complications. Everything went remarkably well. I healed quickly, underwent three months of chemotherapy, and then scheduled the second mastectomy — which took place in August 2015 in the new Ambulatory Surgery Center. It could not have been a better experience.

During the surgeries, tissue expanders were inserted into each breast and were replaced in November 2015 with permanent implants — an occasion that marked the end of a di�cult, 12-month journey.

My story has a good ending, but there is an important lesson in it, one that I tell everyone who will listen: Cancer does not discriminate. Get your annual mammogram — even if, like me, you think you have no risk factors! And if you need expert, compassionate care, know that you will find it at the Dyson Breast Center at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
