From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners, This weekend the Church celebrates the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our Gospel reading from the Evangelist Luke brings us into the home of two of Jesus’ friends, Martha and Mary of Bethany. They were sisters and their brother was Lazarus the man Jesus raised from the dead in John’s Gospel. The Gospel this weekend begins with Jesus entering a village where he is welcomed by Martha. The two sisters Martha and Mary take on different roles in the house. Martha took up the initiative to serve Jesus and perhaps his Apostles and disciples that accompanied him. Mary, however, was not helping her sister but rather she sat at the feet of Jesus listening to him speak. Martha freely let Jesus know what was on her mind, namely that her sister was not doing what she ought to be doing, which was, helping with the serving of food and drink. Jesus’ reply was not what we would expect. He said, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

“Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to his words; the words spoken from the mouth of our Lord and God. What could be greater in our life than to be with the Lord and to hear him speak to us? That is why Jesus said that Mary has the better part. In our prayer life there is both of these dimensions; Martha who freely speaks to the Lord and expresses her desires and wants and Mary who listens at the feet of Jesus. Prayer requires that we speak to the Lord and then in silence await his response in our hearts.

Martha makes her desires known to the Lord, “Tell her to help me.” While Mary sits humbly at the feet of Jesus listening to what the Lord is saying. How often in life we make our demands known to the Lord and tell him to do our will rather than humbly listening to what he wants of us and submitting to his divine will.

In the spiritual life, the life of a Catholic, we are called to be like both Martha and Mary, that is, both active and contemplative. Martha represents the active life by serving those in need and Mary the contemplative, the one at prayer at the feet of the Lord who humbly listens to his words. The Gospel today reminds us of the need to have balance in our lives. All of us have responsibility and duty to fulfill our vocation; we are called to a life of service – to serve one another. The Lord said that he came not to be served but to serve. All of our service and charitable acts in life need to be rooted in the Lord through a life of prayer. The Lord reminds us to go to that inner room within our hearts and souls where only He can enter and there sit at his feet and listen to Him speak. And there like Mary of Bethany we will discover the better part, that is, a foretaste of being with our Lord forever in the Kingdom of Heaven! Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Administrator

Parish Life:

This weekend we will be starting our new youth group consisting of high school teenagers. The group will meet at the pavilion at 6:00 pm and conclude at 8:00 pm. There will be plenty of time for fun, games, socializing, sports, talks, prayer, and food. Please invite your teenagers to come and join us for “Catholic Teens”…Tell them to invite their friends. Please pray for our “Catholic Teens”.

Pope St. John Paul II addressed the youth by saying, "You young people have in a special way the task of witnessing today to the faith; the commitment to bring the Gospel of Christ - the Way, the Truth and the Life - into the third Christian Millennium, to build a new civilization - a civilization of love, of justice and of peace." – (Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 1989)

First Friday at The Homestead

"We are seeking volunteers who are willing and able to help Father Ed with the First Friday 2 p.m. Mass at the Homestead Nursing Home. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Homestead at 1:15 p.m. on every First Friday of each month to help bring the residents down to the first floor All-Purpose Room, where Father Ed celebrates the Mass at 2 p.m. We then return the residents back to their rooms. The entire undertaking is usually completed by 3 p.m. We are partnering with volunteers from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish to enable the Catholic residents of the Homestead to attend Mass. This monthly Mass is the only opportunity that a majority of the residents have to actually be present for Mass, so this is an important ministry. The Homestead Nursing Home is located at 129 Morris Turnpike, Newton, NJ. If you would like to assist us kindly contact Dan Salvatore at 973-579-1908 or via e-mail at [email protected]"

Come with expectant faith and join us, and experience the Lord’s healing power.
