2017 Year 12 Student Leadership Team and School Captains
We are pleased to announce the 2017 Year 12 Student Leadership Team: Caroline Harvey, Lachlan Smith, Susannah
Winkelman, Joshua McInerney, Emily Geerkens, Felix Mol, Samantha Pett and Mark Day. In order to be eligible to
stand for election by staff and Year 11 students, these students were required to submit a written application and
were successful at interview with the Principal, Year Adviser and Coordinator of the Student Leadership Team.
All eight members of the 2017 Year 12 Student Leadership decided to stand for a School Captain position which re-
quired them to give a speech to the whole school in a special assembly. They spoke about what being a leader means
to them and why they would be an effective School Captain. The quality of the speeches was very high and all candi-
dates presented themselves in a professional manner. All staff and Year 7-11 students as well as the current Year 12
Student Leadership Team had the opportunity to vote for our School Captains last week and the following four stu-
dents were elected: Lachlan Smith, Caroline Harvey, Samantha Pett and Joshua McInereny. Congratulations to these
students. We are very proud of all candidates and acknowledge their sincerity, integrity and pride in their school. It is
clear that our student leaders have a strong desire to work together with the students, staff and community to im-
prove our campus and we have much confidence in their ability to achieve great things.

Student Leaders and Captains Determined
It has been a hectic couple of weeks as we elected our Student Leadership Team of 8, then our 4 Captains from that
Team. Congratulations to Lachlan Smith, Susannah Winkelman, Emily Geerkens, Caroline Harvey, Joshua McInerney,
Mark Day, Samantha Pett and Felix Mol. We are so fortunate to have a group like this; students who are amazing role
models, passionate, intelligent and dedicated. All 8 students in the Team nominated for the captaincy and any one, or
any combination would have been worthy of the role. Congratulations to Lachlan Smith, Caroline Harvey, Joshua McIn-
erney and Samantha Pett who were elected as Captains.
Congratulations Deua
Outstanding performances by Deua Berry for NSW in the recent National Championships has earned him a spot in the
Australian Under 16 Volleyball Team. This is a huge achievement!
Well Done Brandon
Brandon Martin has dominated our publicity in recent weeks and he continues to do so, in what has been a stellar year.
In CHS State Athletics last week Brandon achieved a PB and a 7th place in the 3000 metres. The next day he was bril-
liant winning the 2000 Steeplechase to claim the Gold Medal and backed up for the final of the 1500 finishing 5th. Fan-
tastic results that are thoroughly deserved.
Aboriginal Mural
Under the guidance of former student and incredibly gifted artist Taylor Curry and AEO Rex Cochrane, a group of stu-
dents have produced a mural that is now a permanent fixture in our gym. It is an incredible creation and tells an im-
portant story about being on-task, respectful and safe. The mural was developed in collaboration with local Wiradjuri
Elders and features important local totems and symbols. The mural will be officially unveiled during our NAIDOC Week
celebrations on Tuesday 20 September at 5:00 pm. We would love you to come along.
Term 3 Draws to a Close

celebrate their final week of school. I would like to thank everyone at Kelso High Campus for their efforts this term. In
many ways we have so much to celebrate. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing break

Future Directions
Future Directions interviews are complete! 280 students and their parents have met with cross-campus teams to dis-
cuss career and study plans. I would like to thank those parents and carers who were able to make the time to come to
the campuses and meet with College staff.
Now that the interviews are complete, we are in the process of reviewing the choices made by the students and making
the final decisions about what subjects will run for Year 11 2017. I expect that this will be finalised by Wednesday 14th
October.
West of the Divide Stage Band European Tour
A number of Denison College musicians have the privilege of doing something very special this year. 88 talented musi-
cians and singers gathered in Dubbo during the July holidays to start polishing performances they will present in
world famous venues in some of the music capitals of Europe. The intensive weeklong rehearsals were part of the
preparation for the West of the Divide Stage Band and Choir for their European Performance tour in September and
October.
Students from both campuses of Denison College and all over regional NSW will perform, undertake master-
classes and workshops, share musical experiences with local students and enjoy concerts and recitals in Vien-
na, Salzburg, St Gilgen the Mozart Village, Hodonin, Budapest and Prague.
The tour is an opportunity to enrich the talents of the outstanding musicians and singers, taking their local
regional and state experiences to an international level.
Highlights of the tour include:
masterclasses and workshops with renowned conductors at musical meccas such as Salzburg’s Mozar-teum, Vienna’s Wiener Konzerthaus abd the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre;
immersing themselves in the amazing acoustics as they perform in Matthias Church, Budapest, performing with Czech student musicians in the 14th Century Church of St Havel, jamming with jazz musicians on one of Prague’s famous River Vltava jazz boats and entertaining with an impromptu recital in the 900-year-old Benedictine Abbey church at Melk; and
enjoying the opera La Traviatta in the ornate Prague National theatre. The 88 students chosen for the West of the Divide ensemble earned their place through outstanding perfor-
mances at choral and concert band programs held for students
from local public schools.
International Principals’ Meeting
In late August I was privileged to be one of only two NSW school princi-
pals to be able to make a flying visit to Perth to participate in the Interna-
tional Confederation of Principals’ (ICP) Global Leaders’ Forum. ICP repre-
sents the peak principal associations from all over the world, and 75 prin-
cipals from every continent were visiting Perth for one of their regular
executive committee meetings.
As well as having the opportunity to speak to principals from all over Aus-
tralia and such diverse places as Denmark, Ireland, Finland, Kenya and
Nigeria (to name a few), I was also able to contribute to the ICP response
to the Incheon Declaration for Education 2030 which sets out the vision
for education across the world for the next fifteen years.

Premier’s Debating Challenge Success
The Year 9 Debating team competed in the Western Region quarter finals on the 19th August and defeated Orange High
School in a video-conference debate. The team argued as the negative against the topic ‘That the entry requirements
to enter teaching should be raised’. They raised many strong arguments about the quality of teachers in the system,
the need for subject specialised teachers, the importance of teacher passion being balanced against academic de-
mands and how this could lead to a shortage of staff in some areas.
They then proceeded to the semi-final on the 23rd August against Coolah Central School and argued as the affirmative
‘That we should raise the legal drinking age to 21’. They were successful in this round of the finals after raising points
about the impact on brain development, the increase in risk taking behaviour and the need for social change in Austral-
ia.
In the grand final they were against the Year 10 team from Henry Lawson High School in Grenfell and argued as the
negative in the topic ‘That we should give Indigenous people rights to air, land and sea’. They presented arguments
about the existence of consultation in our society, the impacts this could present to trade arrangements and Australia’s
economic stability.
The adjudicators of the grand final praised both teams for a high level debate claiming it was of Year 11/12 standard in
the construction of arguments.
Josephine Geerkens was selected to represent Kelso in the Western Region Representative team and will travel to The
University of Sydney in December to proceed further in the competition.
Congratulations to all members of the team: Bridget Hoban, Josephine Geerkens, Kathleen Murphy and Alivia Bourke.
Best wishes to Josephine in her preparation for State next term.
The Year 7 debating team have progressed to the Western Region quarter finals with their next round of the competi-
tion due to take place next month. Best wishes to the team and congratulations to both teams for being successful
zone winners in 2016.
Legacy Day
Once again KHC took part in raising funds for Legacy
by selling merchandise in the Bathurst CBD.
Well done to the ten SRC students who proudly rep-
resented our school and raised much needed funds
for this vital charity.
Thankyou to Ms Hardes for organising this event.
iLearn Term 3
Our Year 6 transition program, iLearn, continued in Term 3. Once again, students from over ten primary partner
schools attended Kelso High Campus on Wednesdays during Weeks 6, 7 and 8 and took part in an excellent selection of
activities including Technology in Maths, Agriculture and Circus.
During this visit, the Year 6 students had the opportunity to participate in a session led by Cirkus Surreal where they
experienced a wide range of equipment and circus skills. Under the tutelage of current circus students they were
shown how to juggle, to unicycle and to safely use the aerial apparatus. Many of the iLearn students look forward to
joining Cirkus Surreal once they commence at Kelso High.
The Agriculture component saw the students visiting the Ag Plot, getting hands on with the lambs, chickens and cattle
as well as learning about the significance of Agriculture in the high school curriculum.
The visit included a session in Maths. With the help of Mr Pillai the students created 3D shapes using Geogebra soft-
ware. They developed their skills in a short time and had an insight to the role technology plays at Kelso High as part of
our commitment to ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD). There will be more opportunities for parents and students to
learn about BYOD next term.
Students were also asked to complete some testing in Literacy and Numeracy during their visit to assist with class
placements for Year 7 2017.
Many thanks to all the teachers who assisted throughout the iLearn program and to our partner primary schools for
their assistance and support.
Upcoming Important Dates for Year 6 Transition:
29 November – Parent Information Night at 6.30pm
7 December – Orientation Day for all students in Year 7 2017.
Term 3: College Enrichment Activities
Kids Teaching Kids -
The Year 7 Platinum class and the Academically Talented class from Bathurst High have been busy working on their
Kids Teaching Kids projects.
The Kids Teaching Kids Program promotes positive wellbeing and helps build resilience in young people. It raises
awareness and drives action on local and global environmental issues, bringing communities together to solve com-
mon challenges and help the next generation of leaders who will take collective responsibility for our future. The focus
of our projects is Sustainability in Agriculture.
The two campuses have been working together to research, plan and develop workshops that will be presented at our
Denison College mini-conference in Week 1 of Term 4. Groups are focusing on topics such as renewable energy, the
impact of pest animals and food sustainability. One group from each Campus will be selected to represent the College
at the Kids Teaching Kids Conference at the Henry Lawson High School in Grenfell later next term.
Mind Marathon –
During the term twelve Year 8 Denison College students had the opportunity to participate in Mind Marathon at East Hills
Boys High School. We entered a boys team and a girls team to compete in a series of academic rounds each focused on a
different subject area. The rounds covered Maths, Science, English, HSIE and general knowledge. The day ended with a high-
ly competitive paper aeroplane contest.
The students demonstrated great commitment and sportsmanship, working effectively with each other to complete the
challenges. They represented the College superbly with great results. The girls team finished in 10th place and the boys came
15th out of a pool of 26 teams.
Kelso High Campus was represented by Meghan Brennan, Lillani Young, Madie Geerkens, Ben Camenzuli, Moses Akau and
Declan Gould.
Bathurst Jobs Expo 23rd August at BMEC
The focus of the Expo is to increase the students' knowledge and understanding around post school career pathways in areas such as traineeships and apprenticeships, education and training path-ways, exploring career futures and strengthening student out-comes through enterprise learning.
Kelso High Year 10 and 11 students were provided with a wide variety of information about future options.
We also were given the opportunity to provide coffee from our cafe for visitors of the event. Our Year 11 Hospitality students were very busy - even serving Bathurst Mayor Gary Rush.
Australian Defence Forces
Selected Year 10 and 11 students attended a session conducted by 3 ADF representatives on Tuesday 30th August to talk about careers in defence.
RAAF Sergeant Tony Gosarevski, RAAF Flight Lieutenant Esther Suh and Army Corporal Jessielyn Arpon all gave com-pelling reasons for making defence a career.

7 - 12. It was developed by experienced Australian teachers. The program features hundreds of fully animated and nar-
rated maths lessons with over 15,000 exam-style questions to test a student’s mastery of maths. It was originally
provided free to every student in Australia.
Some of the features that this program has are as follows;
800+ Full lessons for each concept with a voice over and numerous examples of varying difficulty. Every lesson has
a pause and rewind facility to help students grasp concepts at their own pace.
Every lesson has an accompanying printable lesson summary & worksheet to consolidate the concept, with full
worked solutions provided also.
A student’s ongoing use and progress in the program is stored for theirs and their teacher’s perusal at any time.
The program can be accessed from any internet ready site, not just at school.
The entire year 7 to 12 program is available to every student, not just their particular year group.
Given that the program covers most of the concepts that we teach, and as good as this resource is, the school wishes to
make it clear that it was never intended by its creators to replace the work that our mathematics teaching staff already
do. This program is best used as a support/supplement to the classroom teaching/learning experience.
If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity please pay $10 to Stroevey.
Goodbye Desta
Way back in 2002 a 6-year-old girl from Ethiopia wrote: “To introduce myself. My name is DESTA MERHAWIT. I live
with my mother in a district called TSEADA ANIBA, which is about 853 km North of Addis-Ababa (Capital of Ethiopia).
My mother supports the family by doing daily labour works. She is divorced and my father lives in other area. I have
got only one brother whose name is KIDANE and he is 15 years old. We all live in one room stonewall rented house
which its roof is covered with mud and wood. We get our drinking water from the nearest distribution point and we
use kerosene lamp to light the room.”
We heard from Desta every year about how her family and community were being helped by our support, and what
progress she was making at school. In 2014 she wrote as an 18 year old “ I am in grade 12 and I love Maths best! I
wants to be a doctor.”
Now 14 years after it started, our support of a 20 year old Desta has come to an end. Desta and her community can
now move forward independently. They now have a well-equipped school, improved access to clean water and
hygienic toilets at home and school. The community has improved health services, better nutrition and farmers have
gained skills in crop production and raising livestock for a reliable income.
Here is a brief list of what Desta and her community now have as a result of our support over the last 14 years: 3 pri-
mary schools, 6 pre-school rooms, 23 232 students being supplied with books and stationery, 6 health posts, medical
supplies and equipment, immunisation programs, 81 wells, 11 toilet blocks.
So … it might be goodbye to Desta, but we still support 16 year old Van Huan Lo from Vietnam … you will hear more
about Van later.

A free workshop for parents and supervisors of
learner drivers will be held by Roads and Mari-
time Services (RMS) in conjunction with Bathurst
Regional Council at Bathurst Memorial Entertain-
ment Centre on Tuesday 20 September at 1pm.
The two hour workshop, Helping Learner Drivers
Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents and super-
visors hands-on advice on how to provide the most
effective driving practice for learner drivers.
“Parents and supervisors of novice drivers have a
crucial role to play in making our roads safer, and
that is why the RMS has developed a course to bet-
ter support them.” Council’s Road Safety Officer, Iris
Dorsett said.
The course will cover topics such as:
Supervising learner drivers
Completing the Learner Driver Log Book
The benefits of supervised on-road driving prac
tice
Licence conditions for learners and provisional
licence holders The New Safe Drivers Course
“Parents and supervisors who have attended this
course found it to have boosted their confidence,
helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed
them to share experiences with other parents and
supervisors” said Ms Dorsett.
The course, which runs from 1.00pm to 3.00pm rein-
forces the important role of families in providing on-
going support for young drivers in the early years of
driving.
Bookings for the Helping Learner Drivers Become
Safer Drivers course are essential and can be made
by calling 6333 6517 during office hours.
