HALAKHIC CORNER Shabbat Vaetchanan
Q: Are women obligated to recite Birchot HaTorah? A: We know that a critical part of the morning prayers for men is
the recitation of three Birchot HaTorah. The text of the Brachot reflect our commandment to learn Torah as well as our desire that future generations remain dedicated to Torah learning. We also know that women are exempt from studying Torah. It would follow then, that women do not have an obligation to recite Birchot HaTorah. Despite this reasoning, the Shulchan Aruch (O”C47/14) rules unequivocally that women do have an obligation to recite these Brachot. In the Biur Halacha, authored by the Chafetz Chaim, he explains that since women have an obligation to learn about Mitzvot which are relevant for them, they must also recite Birchot HaTorah. According to this reasoning, they have an equal obligation to men, and should the need arise a woman may make the Brachot on behalf of a man. The Vilna Gaon however, understands that fundamentally women are exempt from Birchot HaTorah and only recite them in the fashion that women recite Brachot on all Mitzvot even though they may be exempt. If this is the understanding, and women are really exempt, a woman would not be allowed to make the Bracha on behalf of a man.

Fay Althausen Weiss, Z”L Dear Friend, On Thursday July 12th our community suffered the untimely loss of our dear member, Fay Althausen Weiss, Z”L, after a 14-month battle against cancer. Ever since Fay moved to Los Angeles she was a proud and devoted member of our Shul, where she raised her children, Lauren, Elie, Spencer and Caroline, together with her husband, Dr. Irwin. In her personal life as well as her professional role at the Jewish Community Foundation, one of Fay’s main concerns was advancing Jewish Education. Anyone who had the pleasure of interacting with Fay knows that she placed a premium on Jewish education. In consultation with her husband, Dr. Irwin, we would like to perpetuate her memory by creating a campaign that will allow us to purchase Sefarim for our library in our new building. Each donor will be recognized in our weekly Shabbat bulletin and each book will contain a dedication label in Fay’s memory. May we thank you for your generosity, and may we continue Fay’s legacy together in our community. Sincerely,
Elazar Muskin Rabbi
P.S. You can either send in your gift via the enclosed envelope or pay online at www.yicc.org/in-memory-of-fay-zl.html
