19th July 2012 No 9 The first week of the holidays may have felt very cold and miserable to us tough Otagoites but in truth I had to feel very sorry for the team of ninety who arrived from Northland to compete in the New Zealand Area Schools National tournament in Dunedin. They really did feel the cold.  As tournament hosts the South-of-the-South did a great job of making everyone welcome, as well as a great job of organising a first rate tournament. Kate A nderson in her role as sports coordinato r did an excellent job of organising venues, draws, officials, communication, equipment and support personnel for this major event. Kate worked closely with Lynda Walsh-Pascoe of Roxburgh and between the two of them, tournament preparation was spot on.  A huge thanks is extended to Mark and Jennie Cameron, Debbie Shaw, Paul Wilson and Sharon Graham who took turns in driving volunteers from Lawrence Area School each day to help out with the running of the tournament. Also to Clare Blackmore who spent hours behind the camera taking photos. Untimely injury to Ashlea Benington r educed our school team from six to five. The remaining five; T om, Emma, Kelly, Rhea and Eloise had a very busy time competing in two or three sports each: Futsal, Ba sketball, Rugby, Netball and V olleyball. Inspite of having small numbers of players to draw upon South of the South did very well against its compet itors; Northland, Central North Island and T op of the South/Canterbury . Netball was a standout for the South, winning  A division and coming second in B division in Tuesday through to Thursdays round robin. North/South games were played on Friday . It would be fair to say that North dominated. Boys Futsal coached by Kris Watson pulled of f a thrilling win in a penalty shoot out. Kelly T weed was named in the girls South futsal team that went down in an exciting game, that also came down to a penalty shoot out. Emma Shaw was named in the South B netball team that took on a tough North B team bu t the win going Souths way . South of the South also took the opportunity to show case our athletes with disabi lities at the tournament. We were very fortunate to Liam Smith take part in this futsal display . Our students all played well. Importantly they c ombined well with their southern peers, enjoying a rich sporting, cultural and socia l event. Our appetite for next years tournament in Whangarei is well a nd truly whetted. Dear Parents and Friends of the School Kind Regards John Auld Congratulations:  to Tom Blackmore who passed a University Level 1 paper in Economics. This was done during Term 1 & 2 by correspondence through Lincoln University.

The first week of the holidays may have felt very cold and miserable to us tough“Otagoites” but in truth I had to feel very sorry for the team of ninety who arrived fromNorthland to compete in the New Zealand Area Schools National tournament in Dunedin.

They really did feel the cold.

As tournament hosts the South-of-the-South did a great job of making everyone welcome,as well as a great job of organising a first rate tournament.

Kate Anderson in her role as sports coordinator did an excellent job of organising venues, draws, officials, communication, equipment and support personnel for this major event.Kate worked closely with Lynda Walsh-Pascoe of Roxburgh and between the two of them, tournament preparation was spot on.

A huge thanks is extended to Mark and Jennie Cameron, Debbie Shaw, Paul Wilson andSharon Graham who took turns in driving volunteers from Lawrence Area School eachday to help out with the running of the tournament. Also to Clare Blackmore who spenthours behind the camera taking photos.

Untimely injury to Ashlea Benington reduced our school team from six to five. Theremaining five; Tom, Emma, Kelly, Rhea and Eloise had a very busy time competing in twoor three sports each: Futsal, Basketball, Rugby, Netball and Volleyball.

Inspite of having small numbers of players to draw upon South of the South did very wellagainst its competitors; Northland, Central North Island and Top of the South/Canterbury.

Netball was a standout for the South, winning ‘ A’ division and coming second in ‘B’divisionin Tuesday through to Thursdays round robin.

North/South games were played on Friday. It would be fair to say that North dominated.Boys Futsal coached by Kris Watson pulled off a thrilling win in a penalty shoot out. KellyTweed was named in the girls South futsal team that went down in an exciting game, thatalso came down to a penalty shoot out. Emma Shaw was named in the South B netballteam that took on a tough North B team but the win going Souths way.

South of the South also took the opportunity to show case our athletes with disabilities atthe tournament. We were very fortunate to Liam Smith take part in this futsal display.

Our students all played well. Importantly they combined well with their southern peers, enjoying a rich sporting, cultural and social event.

Our appetite for next years tournament in Whangarei is well and truly whetted.
