•

What is the speaker’s main point in giving the

talk – what is their THESIS STATEMENT ?

•  What evidence do they give to support their

main point? Examples? Data? Experiments?

•

Do they present their information e"ectively?

Can I understand it? Does it make sense?

•  Why is their topic important to them?

Think critically!!!

•

A citation is contained in the text and gives the basicinformation on your source so that people can refer

to your bibliography (or reference list) to find it forthemselves.

•  Goes within a sentence, before the full stop.

This theory was first developed by Killjoy (von Trapp

1992).

Many researchers (Cordero 1992; Bakshi 2014; Chee

2013) have argued that this theory is mistaken.

•  You can also integrate the author’s name into the

sentence and follow it with the year of publication

and page number in brackets.

Von Trapp (1992: 33) concluded that Killjoy was the first

to develop the theory.

However, Cordero (1992: 75) was quick to refute it.

•  When quoting directly from a text, write the text

word for word and place inverted commas at the

beginning and end of the quotation.

•

Follow this with the author, year of publicationand page number in parentheses, then the full

stop.

“The theory is a wonderful development” (von Trapp1998: URL).

•  If the quoted text ends up being more than four

lines, you need to indent it one extra centimetre on

each side and italicise it.

Many researchers have come to a di"erent conclusion. For

example, Smith (2014: 88) asserts:

Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used in the printing andtypesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been theindustry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s,

when an unknown printer took a galley of type andscrambled it.

Smith goes on to comment, "So there" (89).

•  When citing a quote, a paraphrase or a short

summary of an author’s work or ideas, you

must include the author, year and page

number.

•  When citing a reference to the overall content

of an author’s work, you only include the

author and year (you do not need to cite pagenumbers because you are referring to the

entire work).

Bibliography

•  While a bibliography is usually a list of all  the

sources of information that you used in

researching your assignment, the AIM Style

Guide stipulates that it contain ONLY  thesources you actually cited (in other words, it

serves as a reference list).

•

It enables anyone reading your assignment tolocate your research sources if required.

Find the example in the AIM Style Guide

closest to what you want to reference, and

use that as a guide. (That way, at least you

can point to that to justify what you did ifanyone objects.)

Don’t worry!

•

You won’t be marked for your referencing style

for THIS assessment (although you definitely

will for the other two, so why not get in the

habit of doing it right?).

•  We will be going over all the citation and

bibliography rules again in later weeks.

The maximum penalty to be imposed in the first case ofplagiarism or academic misconduct is a FAIL grade for

the unit and entry on the student’s record of the finding. However, incidences of academic misconduct are reviewed on a case-by-

the first instance, an opportunity to contest claims of such behaviour in a

face-to-face meeting following notification by the Department.

•

Plagiarism is copyright infringement, which isillegal.

•  It's also deliberately misleading your reader,

which is morally wrong.

•  It can also get you expelled or sacked, and

ruin your career, which is at best inconvenient.

•

Plagiarising by accident is not accepted asan excuse. So BE CAREFUL and cite a

source for EVERYTHING.
