The Translation Serviceof the Court of Justice

It is responsible for the translation, fromand into any of the Community lan-guages, of the documents required forthe participation in, and understanding,resolution and publication of, proceed-ings brought before the CommunityCourts.

The Directorate-General for Translationcurrently includes 22 language units, onefor each official language into which theCourt’s case-law must be translated, andfour support units providing research,documentation, terminology and train-ing, and coordinating all translation re-quests.

The English-languageTranslation Department

It is responsible for the English-languagetranslation of all documents required.

The translations of judgments, ordersand Opinions of the Advocates Generalare published, usually in the EuropeanCourt Reports.

Unpublished translations include ordersfor reference from national courts, writtenpleadings and Reports for the Hearing.

Translate legal texts into English•

Revise such texts•

Serve as“pivot”translators from Czech,•Danish, Lithuanian and Swedish, forthe benefit of the other translationunits

Provide advice on English legal termi-•nology within the Directorate-General

Provide legal analysis in cooperation•with the Registries and other depart-ments of the Court

Qualities required

The work of the translation service is com-plex and demanding, in terms of quality,quantity and deadlines, and English-language translations are of particular

significance in the numerous caseswhich have English as the language ofthe case.

English-language lawyer linguists there-fore need to satisfy the following condi-tions:

Have a perfect command of English•(mother-tongue level)

Have a thorough knowledge of French,•the Court’s working language in whichjudgments and orders are drafted

Have a thorough knowledge of a third•official languageoftheEuropeanUnion,in which orders for reference, pleadingsand Opinions may be drafted

Have successfully completed a suit-•able course in law (to ensure adequateknowledge of the national law andlegal system of one of the English-speaking Member States) i.e. hold adegree in law attesting completion ofat least three years’ university study, orits equivalent, in the United Kingdomor Ireland, or have qualified as a barris-

ter, advocate or solicitor in the UnitedKingdom or Ireland

Have an adequate k nowledge of•Community law

Have the ability, though not necessar-•ily from experience, to translate com-plex, legal texts

Have the ability to use standard office•technology

Have the ability to adapt and develop•throughout their careers

Have the ability to fit into a multi-•lingual, multicultural environment

Terms and Conditions forthe lawyer linguist

Successful competition candidates•are recruited from reserve lists atGrade AD7. When Community taxhas been deducted and a number ofallowances added, the single personwith no dependants will receive a netmonthly salary of at least 4880 euros

Community officials have generous•medical insurance and pension ben-efits

Staff are entitled to at least 24 days•of paid annual leave per year, plus anumber of public holidays

Newly-recruited lawyer linguists re-•ceive detailed training in the IT appli-cations and working methods to beused in their work

Lawyer linguists are encouraged•throughout their careers to learnadditional languages by following in-house and residential courses

Lawyer linguists are also encouraged•to improve their legal knowledge,and law lectures are regularly organ-ised
