www.O-Shot-Caw.org 165 Ordeal Candidates were inducted at the Winter Ordeal! n the O-Shot-Caw Lodge, we pride ourselves on being the greatest Order of the Arrow Lodge. The 2002 Winter Ordeal just further emphasized that point. On the weekend of January 4-6, 2002, our Lodge inducted 165 Ordeal Candidates from all over South Florida. To go along with that, 35 of our Brothers sealed their ties in the Brotherhood. Overall, the total attendance for the weekend was just shy of 400 Brothers. An Ordeal of this magnitude could not have been pulled off without the help of certain Arrowman from both the Lodge Executive Committee and from within Chapters. One Chapter that definitely deserves a round of applause is the To-Hopki-Lagi Chapter for their excellent cooking during the weekend. Everyone will agree, the smoked turkey Saturday night was amazing. The Lodge was able to accomplish many projects with the help of all these Brothers. In the Order of the Arrow shed near the O-Shot-Caw campsite, three shelves were built to give us more storage space. The shelves span the width of an entire wall, allowing us to store many items that were formerly kept on the floor. This makes inventory much easier and items more accessible. Other work projects included a new grill behind Mike George Hall, clearing debris from campsites, mulching trails, and clearing trails to make them visible. As much as we liked having hundreds of Brothers in attendance, the downside was that the work projects were completed too quickly! That is not something commonly seen at an Ordeal. However, with the projects completed early, Chapter members were able to play football, board games and whatever other fun activities they wanted. Chiefly Speaking…Dear Brothers,

"He alone isworthy to wearthe Arrow whowill continuefaithfully toserve his fellowman.” Thisquote from ourfounder, E.Urner Goodmancould not havebeen truer. We

must all realize that we are membersof this supreme organization becausewe truly love the Boy Scout program. We were elected from both membersand non-members because we livethe Scout Oath and Law in our dailylives. I say this because it is now timefor our Lodge to honor thoseArrowman who have cheerfullyserved both the Order of the Arrowand Scouting Communiry wihtoutany sign of personal gain orrecgonition. The founding principalsof the Order of the Arrow (WWW)should be a part of everyone’scharacter. Morevoer, living our lifeby the Admontion spoken to you byAllowat Sakima is something thatshould couple the Scout Oath andLaw in your daily life.

I mentioned that we willrecognize our fellow Brothers. Thisrecognition ceremony takes placeannually at our Lodge Banquet. ThisLodge event has NO WORKprojects. The weekend is full ofbrotherhood, training, competitions, and fun. On Saturday night of theLodge Banquet, we will have ouraward presentation and honor thoseBrothers on the Lodge ExecutiveCommittee, recipients of theExceptional First Year Arrowman,Meretoriuous Service Award,Founder’s Award, Arrowman Service

Award, and our Lodge willconclude the evening with theVigil Call-out Ceremony.Registration forms are availableonline at our Lodge’s website.

Hello fellow Arrowmen. TheCampership Fund is doing verywell and is off to a good start thisyear. What the Campership Fundis in charge of is making sure weraise enough money for theJoseph Aaron Abbott Campershipfund and make sure that thefinancially needy scouts that wantto go to summer camp get to go.After talking to my advisor, GlenGilbert, I've noticed we haveapproximately $13,000 out of the$20,000 Lodge goal. Those$13,000 came from the HauntedForest and a few other fundraisersfrom the past. I have beencontacting the Chapter Chiefs tomake sure they all get infundraisers in which all profitswill go to the Joseph AaronAbbott Campership fund. If youor any group has any ideas onfundraisers please tell yourChapter Chiefs in order for themto get back to me on what therefundraiser is going to be.

INTERNETWith the redesign of the web site,my goal is to make our Lodge'ssite the best web site it canpossibly be for the InternetCompetition at the SectionConference this year. Recently, the OA Jeopardy Section has beenadded back in and made tofunction again. I believe thissection of the site is interestingand informative and "different"from anything I have seen onother Lodge sites, so it shouldhelp us stand out in thecompetition. One of the mostpopular pages on our site is the"Where to Go Camping Guide." Itgets downloaded a great deal with1315 requests since we moved thesite to the new server last June.According to the stats for our site, people are visiting the links page, the officer’s information page, thecalendar and events pages. Thevarious PDF forms for each eventare getting downloaded, so peopleare finding the site useful. Pleaseemail me one or two of your bestphotos from each OA event so I

ARROWMAN SUCCESS…BEYOND THE BOY SCOUTS

It is always good to mention the success ofour fellow brothers. Especially when they excelbeyond the Boy Scout Program.

Our current Membership Chairman and EagleScout, Ian Brelinsky, has been nominated for theSilver Knight Award in the category of Mathematics. The purpose of the Silver Knight Awards program isto recognize outstanding students who have not onlymaintained good grades, but also who unselfishlyapply their special knowledge andtalents to contribute significantservice to their school andcommunity. Our Lodge wishesIan the best of luck in his questfor the Silver Knight. Ian is asenior at Nova High School, where he is also Chief Editor ofthe school’s Yearbook. Anotherparamount accomplishment forIan was when he earned acombined SAT score of 1570. Hehopes to attend M.I.T. next year. For more information about theSilver Knight Award, log ontowww.silverknightaward.com.

Keeping with good news, another one of ourArrowman has proven to be a true Eagle Scout. PastLodge Chief Devang Desai was inducted into theIron Arrow Honor Society at the University ofMiami. The Iron Arrow is the highest honor achievedat the University, and Devang is now part of thislegacy. Not only was he recently inducted into theIron Arrow, but he was also elected as their MedicineMan for the coming year. Devang keeps busy withIron Arrow, Student Bar Association (where he isalso a Senator), and as a Second Year Law Student. For more information about the Iron Arrow HonorSociety, log onto www.ironarrow.com.

Do you know a Brother of the O-Shot-CawLodge that has accomplished, been awarded, orinducted into a prestigious honor society outside ofthe Boy Scouts? If so, please submit their informationto the address on Page 2, and they may be featured inthe next issue!

TO-HOPKI-LAGIWell, we got off to somewhat of a good start at theWinter Ordeal; we had a lot of fun cooking. We haddecent attendance, but we had some help from thenow extinct Allohak, and with that I would like togive a big thanks to Jimbo Carlsen, without him wewould have had some trouble making the great foodthat we did. So thank you Jimbo. I'm expectingsome great things coming from To-Hopki-Lagi and Ithink we are going to make a big splash at the LodgeBanquet. We will be ready, so you better watch outGokhos. And when Section Conference comesaround hopefully we will contribute to the best lodgein the nation. So that’s it for now. Courtney Bays

unite and emulate some of the greatest Seminole Dances. The team performs at Lodgeevents, Scoutmaster’s Camporee, and competes at both the Section Conference and theNational Order of the Arrow Conference. If you are under the age of 21, which means youare a youth member of the Lodge, then you can join the Dance Team! At the last SectionConference, our Dance Team earned First Place in Group competition. This was the 23rd

Our Dance Team Chairman Eric McAlpin is confident that we willdefend our Section title successfully and regain our Nationaltitle at this year’s National Order of the Arrow Conference. The last time we earned the National title was at theUniversity of Indiana in 1990, and that is where this NOACwill be! The only way you can become a part of this history isby joining the dance team!

The Patchwork CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT Page 10

A Powerful Five Year legacy: Allohak Chapter, 1996-2001In 1996, the South Florida Council decided to

add a fourth District to the Broward County area inan attempt to spur membership growth and make theBoy Scout program more accessible. With theaddition of the “Miccosukee District” to the westernBroward area, the O-Shot-Caw Lodge also witnessedthe formation of the Allohak Chapter. Allohak in theLenni Lenape dictionary translates to “The PowerfulOne.” No one in the Order of the Arrow could haveanticipated the power that was about to emerge fromthis Chapter.

The first Chapter Chief to be elected wasDavid Levine. At the time, the Chapter met monthlyon Sundays. Arrowman would work on Indian craftssuch as long shirts or chokers. The Chapter was notknown for its huge attendance at Lodge events, norwas it even considered a powerful Chapter. The bigevent for the Allohak Chapter in the initial years wasbeing able to run the Midway Ticket booth at theHaunted Forest! This of course was because theChapter was brand new and troops were still in theprocess of having Unit Elections, then sending theirscouts to the next Ordeal.

In the 1998-1999 Lodge Year, the Chapterstarted the year off with new leadership andenthusiastic Arrowman. The most valuable tool theAllohak Chapter had that year was all of itsleadership was young and eager to grow. For the firsttime ever, the Allohak Chapter had a display in theHaunted Forest. This may not be a big deal for mostChapters, but at the time, the Allohak Chapter unitedfor the first time ever on a Lodge level. They madesuch an impact that they went on to win the GoldenPumpkin Award for the 1998 Haunted Forest

After the Haunted Forest in 98, there wasnothing but electricity running through the Chapter. At the Section Conference in 1999, the AllohakChapter brought the second largest Chaptercontingent. Moreover, at the 2000 and 2001 SectionConference, the Allohak Chapter brought the largestChapter contingent. Chief Gary Kienzle brought thelargest Chapter contingent from Allohak in 2001when over 50 Arrowmen from the Chapter went tothe Section Conference, which also made up onefourth of the overall Lodge attendance.

With the Chapter growing at an exponentialrate, the Arrowman from the Chapter became eagerto get more competitive and active on the Lodgelevel. In 2000, former Allohak Chapter Chief Josh

Levenson accepted the Best All Around Chapteraward for the Allohak Chapter. Within just four yearsof existence, the Allohak Chapter became the singlemost powerful Chapter of the Lodge.

Allohak Chapter was merged with the otherChapters of the Broward Country area in a decisionmade by the South Florida Council Executive Board. The decision was made in response to the financialsituation the Council was in. Arrowman from theChapter are sad to see the Powerful Allohak Chaptermerged, but now they can all say they were part of alegacy. A legacy that forever shook the foundation ofthe O-Shot-Caw Lodge.

Secrets Behind the 2001 National Jamboree Patch! What is in a patch? The 2001 South Florida Council National Scout Jamboree patch set means different

things to many people. Something to wear, or trade, collect, or just another patch. The challenge was to designsomething special for those participating in the Jamboree event, while representing our local heritage, environment and Scouting values. Many concepts and ideas were kicked around, but we settled on capturing thespectacular South Florida skies, elements of the 2001 Jamboree logo, and a lone Seminole, representing the"Unconquered" tribe that is part of where we live and is echoed in the O-Shot-Caw lodge. Each piece wasdesigned to stand alone, but also to blend into one single design. Just as each one of us is different, but when weall come together for one common purpose it makes something special, bigger than any one thing, just like theJamboree and Scouting. The five different colored borders, red for Troop1735, green for Troop 1736, blue for Troop 1737, yellow for Troop2015, commemorate the Raven, Bull, Wolf, and Curlew Brownseapatrols. Purple was selected for Scouters serving on Jamboree Staff. Thepurple was identified by Baden Powell to represent the worldbrotherhood of Scouting, and is also used on the World Brotherhoodcrest. South Florida Jamboree Staffers came into contact with Scouts andScouters from around the country and the world. The ghosting of "SouthFlorida Council" represents the support that is not also seen, but isalways there. The green neckerchief honors something special to mepersonally, but that is another story. The large great white heron honorsthe tradition and spirit of the O-Shot-Caw lodge Brothers that werecarried to and shared at A.P. Hill. The American flag, the standard of ourcountry, was prominently displayed on the council strip has come tomore cherished, but has also been part of Scouting and continues toproudly wave. I would like to thank all of those that contributed, andshared comments on the design. Special thanks to Josh Levenson, StanHoff, David Shorter, Bob Wolz, SFC Jamboree Committee and Irene atKrelman for their guidance in the development of this stitched piece ofSouth Florida Council National Jamboree history. It was an honor todesign this set. I hope that every South Florida Council Jamboreeparticipant knows that they are the individual pieces that make upsomething bigger through Scouting, and that there are no limits when wecome together.
