My name’s Mariko and I live in New York, but I’mJapanese, and I was at school in Tokyo. There werelots of differences with American schools. We werealways polite to our teachers. The first class was‘Home class’ – Japanese children must tidy theirclassrooms every morning! Then there was gym. Butthere were also some typical subjects – Science, andEnglish, for example.

Lunch was always a typical Japanese cold meal of‘Bento’ in the classroom with the rest of the children.School was from quarter past eight to six, but in theevening there were also four hours for homework. And there were classes on Saturday, too!

Mariko was born in America. 1 Japanese children aren’t rude to their

teachers. 2 Japanese students clean their classrooms

every day. 3 Mariko didn’t study English. 4 Mariko always had lunch at school. 5 Japanese children go to school five days a

THE DISCOVERY OF AUSTRALIACaptain James Cook was a famous English explorer. Hewas born in Yorkshire in October, 1728. He travelledround the planet in his ship, the ‘Endeavour’. In 1768he went to the South Seas, and visited many islands, including Tahiti and New Zealand. Some people saythat he discovered Australia. This probably isn’t true, but he was the first Englishman to go there.

When Cook and his men landed, they saw some verystrange creatures. ‘What are they?’ they said. TheAborigines – the native Australian people – answered‘kangaroo’, which means ‘we don’t understand’ intheir language. Cook and his men thought it was thename of the animal, and that is how they gave thekangaroo its English name. Some people think thisstory is true, but others don’t. What do you think?

‘My Grandmother’s Story’ by Tina Hardcastle

My grandmother was born in London on 1st

September, 1940, exactly one year after theSecond World War began. It was very dangerousin London then. Every night there were bombsand they destroyed parts of the city. At night, everybody slept in the Underground. One morningmy grandmother and her parents got up and wentback to their house but it wasn’t there. ‘You mustleave London,’ my grandmother’s father said, ‘I amgoing to the war’. So they went to live inBlackpool, on the coast. At the weekend mygrandmother played on the beach. Her motherworked in a shop from Monday to Friday.

The war in Europe finished in 1945 and mygrandmother’s father came back to Englandone year after that. ‘I don’t want to go back toLondon,’ my grandmother said. ‘Let’s stay here, please’. So they stayed in Blackpool, and mygrandmother still lives there with her husband,Bill… all because of those bombs!

‘My Grandmother’s Story’ by Tina Hardcastle

My grandmother was born in London, England,on 1st September, 1940, almost exactly one yearafter the Second World War began. Living inLondon was very dangerous. Every night therewere bombs and they destroyed parts of the city,so at night my grandmother and her parents sleptin the Underground. One morning they got upand went back to their street, but it was in ruins, and their house wasn’t there. ‘You can’t live here,’my grandmother’s father said, ‘You must leaveLondon. I am going to the war in North Africa’.

So they went to live in Blackpool, in the north ofthe country. My grandmother’s mother worked ina shop from Monday to Friday. The war in Europefinished in 1945 and my grandmother’s fathercame back to England a year after that. ‘I don’twant to go back to London,’ my grandmothersaid, ‘Why don’t we stay here?’ So they did, andmy grandmother still lives there with herhusband, Bill… all because of those bombs.
