Concerts are a very important part of your child’s participation in the music program. Because a concert performance can make some people nervous, there are a few things you as an audience can do to make our concerts less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone. !1. Please be seated before the starting time of the concert.

2. If you are bringing small children, please stress the importance of being quiet while the music is being performed.

3. If you must leave for any reason, please do so between musical selections. Please re-enter between selections as well.

4. If you have a small child who will not stop crying or can’t sit still, please take him or her out of the performance room quickly and quietly.

5. Please avoid taking photos during the performance. The flash can cause a problem with reading the music or following the conductor.

6. Please do not talk during the performance. Others may want to hear the music. It may be their child’s “big part”.

7. Please do not call out your child’s name before, during or after the group’s performance.

8. Please turn off all cell phones before the performance begins.

!Let’s do what we can to make all concerts a huge success!

Haydn's music contains many jokes, and the Surprise Symphony includes probably the most famous of all: a sudden fortissimo chord at the end of the otherwise piano opening theme in the variation-form second movement. The music then returns to its original quiet dynamic, as if nothing had happened, and the ensuing variations do not repeat the joke. Variations on a Theme by Haydn is a compositional treatment of this theme, using timbral, rhythmic and melodic changes to develop the original idea.!!I can still hear my college sight-singing professor, Dr. Louis Munkachy, telling us, in his thick Hungarian accent, ‘Repetition is the mother of knowledge’. For every bit of truth this statement holds, it is equally true that repetition is that natural enemy of the eleven to thirteen year-old. Their motto more resembles: I did it great once; therefore, greatness must flow from me. So, in trying to compose a piece that painlessly introduced middle level students to syncopation, I knew that repetition had to be present, but disguised so that as not to look like something instructive. Moreover, the students would need to perceive (on their own) that the musical needs of the piece dictated how many times a syncopated pattern would recur. I believe that balance exists in As Winds Dance. - Sam Hazo!!Jubilance is an overture style concert band work in ABA Form. James Swearingen uses mixed meters and syncopated rhythms to create a rhythmic drive throughout the Introduction and A sections. The middle of the piece is simple flowing melody introduced by the flutes against the dark reedy sound of the clarinets. As the brass and saxophones enter, the color shifts from dark to light with the instrumentation and change of key. As the original drive and syncopated rhythms return, the overjoyed feeling that the title suggests builds to an exciting climax.!!Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, one of many great Russian composers and one of the members of the Mighty Five (Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Borodin and Cui), who all developed as composers and were the impetus of the Russian school of composition during the mid to late 1800’s. Dance of the Tumblers is one of the main themes from his “Snow Maiden”, one of the many operas he composed based on Russian folk and fairy tales. Though brief in duration, this vibrant and energetic dance is considered by many to be one of his most well-known themes and exudes the light-hearted spirit of much of the music from the opera.

TES!Linden Lea is a straightforward adaptation of the famous song by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The song is especially familiar in Britain, where the melody is known in virtually every household. Varied instrumental color and slight tempo changes are utilized to heighten the emotional appeal of this attractive melody.!!The 1812 Overture is an orchestral overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, commemorating the unsuccessful French invasion into Russia, and the subsequent withdrawal that devastated Napoleon’s Grande Armee, an event that marked 1812 as the major turning point of the Napoleonic Wars. The work is best known for the sequence of cannon fire, which is sometimes performed at outdoor festivals with one or more real cannons.!!Tribes throughout the world have long been associated with rituals. Ceremonies have been performed for many reasons, including harvests, good fortune in war, healing, and change in status of an individual. Chant and Savage Dance is a work that programmatically depicts one of theses ancient tribal rituals. The soft opening theme provides a certain amount of instability that is reinforced by interesting harmonies. This instability foreshadows the impending savage dance, which is introduced by percussion. The music continues to build until the intensity of the dance seems almost unbearable. Soon, the dancers reach the point of utter exhaustion and uncontrollably collapse to the ground.!

S“It is our job, as parents, educators, and friends, to see that our young people have the opportunity to attain the thorough education that will prepare them for the future. Much of that education takes place in the

classroom. We must encourage our youngsters in such pursuits as music education. In addition to learning the valuable lesson that it

takes hard work to achieve success, no matter what the arena, music education can provide students with a strong sense of determination,

improved communication skills, and a host of other qualities essential for successful living.”
