Teaching notes Level: false beginner / elementary (A1/A2). Age group: five to seven years old. Time: approximately one hour. Language:

feelings with to be

common objects: biscuit, bowl, brush, bed, medicine, ball

facial features: eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, ears

some letters of the alphabet

some colours. Activity 1 Talk about it

Resources:

a picture of a dog and a farmer (e.g. p.1 above)

the song ‘Bingo’, available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcBfPG-GiYM&feature=related

1. Ask the children the following questions:

Have you got a dog? What’s its name? What’s it like? Is it a male or a female?

2. Show them the picture of the farmer and dog and tell them that the farmer’s dog is called ‘Bingo’.

3. Listen to the first verse of the song.

4. Play it again line by line and have the children repeat the words. (Don’t do the clapping part of the song just yet.)

5. Check the children know the dog’s name and help them to spell it. Activity 2 Make a dog

Resources:

paper or paper plates

pieces of fabric for making ears and a tongue

stickers/beads or pens to make eyes and a nose

letter stencils of the letters B I N G O, or the letters on p.1 above and some coloured paper

coloured ribbon

a long strip of card (big enough to fit the letters on).

1. Children make doggy faces by simply drawing a dog or by using paper plates and collage.

2. Now either draw around each letter (B I N G O) on different coloured paper and cut the letters out or else have children colour in the letters on p.1 and cut them out.

3. Take the long strip of card and fold it into six sections. Stick the dog at the top and a letter on each section so that it reads BINGO downwards. Tape a coloured ribbon onto the back so it can be hung up.

Activity 3 Sing the song

Resources: the song ‘Bingo’, available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcBfPG-GiYM&feature=related

1. Hang up the BINGO signs around the room (perhaps over a pretend kennel!)

2. Ask the children: Who wants to be a dog? Who wants to be a farmer?

3. Play the song, and get the children to mime being dogs and farmers.

4. Next, stand in a circle and play the song again, including the second verse. Clap each time you remove a letter and ask the children to say the letter. You could also point to the letter on the BINGO sign to reinforce the spelling.

Activity 4 Pretend to be a dog

Resources:

feelings flashcards on p.3 above

dog soft toys

dog biscuits (real or pretend)

a brush

a doggy bed

bowls for food and water

medicine

a blanket

a collar and lead

a ball. Pretend to be the dog. At various points, hold up a feeling flashcard and invite the children to fetch an item to satisfy your needs, e.g. I’m hungry – a biscuit; I’m cold – a blanket; I’m bored – a walk.

Do this a few times then swap roles, inviting the children to be a dog in need of care. Extension activity / homework

Give students a copy of the lyrics on p.2 and the following instructions:

1. Can you colour Bingo?

2. Where’s his bed? Draw it.

3. Where’s his bowl? Draw it.

4. Where’s his ball? Draw it.

5. He’s bored! Can you take him for a walk?
