Check out the latest update about the Spring Fair and news from HOK in this newsletter. The fundraising work they do makes a huge difference to the education of all students at St Benedict’s school and we are grateful for their ongoing work and support.

We have received our confirmed ERO report following the visit from reviewers last term. This is our first report under the new ERO review processes and reporting format that focuses on the question “How effectively do schools respond to Māori students whose learning and achievement needs acceleration?” this is a national focus are and all school will be reviewed in this way moving forward. ERO will visit the school again in 3 years. Below are key findings from the report.

We have a clear vision and values within our school.

Students are supported to contribute positively to school life and be successful.

Students are supported well to manage their learning. Good levels of student collaboration are evident.

Inclusive practices are demonstrated.

Teachers provide focussed, supportive teaching for groups of learners and foster good learning relationships with students.

Nearly all students continue to work at or above the national standards in reading, writing and maths.

There is minimal disparity between ethnic groups in literacy.

The school has made progress towards achieving goals since the last review and should continue working in this way.

Planned reviews are underway to evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum and learning programmes. These should continue.

Maori students achieve as well as their peers in literacy with a small group below the standard in maths.

The board monitors progress towards the school’s strategic goals. Moving forward recommendations include;

Continue with the work that has begun with internal evaluation of curriculum and learning areas.

Further develop school-wide systems and expectations for acceleration of students at risk of not achieving the national standards.

Further improvement of systems and processes across the school.

Continue to review school policies to ensure they are up to date with legislative and sector changes.

Continue to develop the teacher appraisal and inquiry system. We have one action to complete as a part of this report. This is to complete an internal evaluation workshop about ERO resources that will support us in our work moving forward and to put in place a Raising Achievement Plan that aligns our practices with ERO processes. This workshop took place yesterday with the school leaders and board members. Our full report can be viewed on the ERO website at http://www.ero.govt.nz/review-reports/st-benedicts-school-khandallah-11-08-2016/

Last week (Monday-Sunday), our solar panels generated 48 kWh of solar energy. The weather hasn’t really been playing the game for energy generation last week but we look forward to sunnier and brighter days to come. Our school page can be viewed by clicking on the St Benedict’s School Schoolgen link: http://schoolgen.co.nz/schoolgen-schools/st-benedicts-school.

Writing from Room 8

Anxiety

Anxiety is a cold breeze creeping down your spine, a silent question “Can I do it?”

Anxiety comes to you in a flurry of fear and humiliation, turning you into a murky pool of negative thoughts.

Anxiety is a single dark thought giving birth to millions more.

By Sandrine Dimen

Room 8

Hate

Hate comes to your heart in a whirlwind of dark thoughts, wiping out all other emotions, turning it into a black hole. It feels like standing outside on a cold day, hail hitting you again and again from a blackened sky. Hate takes over your body in a spine chilling black wave. Not caring whether it is right or wrong. By Kate Nahu Room 8

WEEKLY REFLECTION

"Jesus didn't say, 'Blessed are those who care for the poor.' He said, 'Blessed are we

where we are poor, where we are broken.' It is there that God loves us deeply and

pulls us into deeper communion with himself."
