This event actually started out in Turin. The ‘Festival Torino Settembre Musica’ began in 1978 as the brainchild of Turin’s Cuncillor for Culture Giorgio Balmas, a visionary cultural promoter whose idea was to make classical music accessible to a wider and younger audience by presenting rich and original programs. In 2007, after a cultural twinning between Turin and Milan, the Festival’s name was changed into ‘MITO SettembreMusica’ – but the vision remained the same. The name, by the way, is a play on words that combines the abbreviations for the two industrious Northern Italian cities (MI for Milan and TO for Turin) to form the word MITO, which in turn means “myth” in Italian. This name aptly expresses both the festival’s cul- tural relevance and its function as an ideal “bridge” connecting Turin and Milan, two cities that are geo- graphically close but culturally distinct: these two large cities are only a 50-minutes train ride apart, and yet, despite globalization, maintain their charac- teristic roots, lifestyles and traditions, and welcome visitors with their unique atmospheres. Since its opening, each September the Festival’s events and audiences have filled theatres, auditori- ums, churches, courtyards and squares, turning the two cities into a pervasive musical experience. The Festival is at the forefront of the integration processes between the two towns and an example of cultural vitality, to the point that the number of initiatives has now exceeded one hundred, both in Turin and in Milan, with an average of three events daily in each city. MITO offers a single specular program for both of them, albeit with slight variations, and their orches- tras exchange visits, thus establishing a further orig- inal connection between them. So far, the Festival’s offering has ranged from an- cient, classical and contemporary music, with sym- phonic and chamber concerts, to jazz, rock and pop music, and even songwriting performances, often with projects exclusively designed for the Festival. Since 1982, pioneering and significant monographic exhibitions have been dedicated to the main con- temporary composers such as: Thomas Adès, Louis Andriessen, George Benjamin, Luciano Berio, Harrison Birtwistle, Pierre Boulez, Elliot Carter, Luis De Pablo, Franco Donatoni, Henry Dutilleux, Luca Francesconi, Beat Furrer, Sofja Gubajdulina, Hans Werner Henze, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, György Ligeti, Peter Maxwell Davies, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Arvo Pärt, Goffredo Petrassi, Steve Reich, Wolfgang Rihm, Kaija Saariaho, Alfred Schnittke, Salvatore Sciarrino, Toru Takemitsu, Isang Yun, Iannis Xenakis, Fabio Vacchi. From 1985 to 2011 the exhibitions were supported by the publication of mono- graphic books in collaboration with im- portant Italian publishers. A synthetic overview of some artists host- ed since 1978 also shows the Festival’s extraordinary importance: Claudio Abbado, Roberto Abbado, Salvatore Accardo, Africa Unite, Laurie Anderson, Marta Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Chet Baker, Daniel Barenboim, Franco Battiato, Stefano Bollani, Goran Bregovic, Alfred Brendel, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Khatia Buniatishvili, Uri Caine, Vinicio Capossela, Myung- Whun Chung, Ornette Coleman, Paolo Conte, Chick Corea, Franco D’Andrea, Colin Davis, Francesco De Gregori, Dave Douglas, Eugenio Finardi, Ivan Fischer, Ivano Fossati, Richard Galliano, Severino Gazzelloni, HK Gruber, Natalia Gutman, Herbie Hancock, Gidon Kremer, Ute Lemper, Nikolai Lugansky, Lorin Maazel, Fiorella Mannoia, Mau Mau, Kurt Masur, Neville Marriner, Bobby McFerrin, Brad Mehldau, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Gianandrea Noseda, Antonio Pappano, Murray Perahia, Michel Petrucciani, Maria João Pires, Maurizio Pollini, Gregory Porter, Massimo Ranieri, Enrico Rava, Lou Reed, Vadim Repin, Mstislav Rostropovic, Fazil Say, Jordi Savall, Hanna Schygulla, Toni Servillo, David Sylvian, Uto Ughi, Cassandra Wilson, Yuri Temirkanov, McCoy Tyner, Ornella Vanoni, Krystian Zimerman … From the nineties onwards, the Festival has also paid particular attention to ethnic music, with significant events dedicated to the musical traditions of Central Africa, China, the Himalayan region, Java, Cambodia, the Indian Kerala, Iran, Vietnam, Korea, the territo- ries of Gypsy tradition, Japan, Turkey, Haiti and, in 2012, Morocco and Bali. The last three years have seen maestro Nicola Campogrande as the artistic director. The president is Anna Gastel, who is well-known for having dedi- cated all her life to art and culture. Thanks to their contribution, the Festival has now a renewed format that follows a chosen leitmotif, fo- cused on classical music and open to the great rep- ertoire of contemporary music. This year’s theme is Dance: an all-encompassing subject, which will no doubt arouse the public’s curi- osity, sparkling ideas, debates and emotions. For the first time, the allocations of the 2018 Entertainment Fund have awarded the MITO SettembreMusica Festival with a total contribution of € 194,452 distributed between the Turin Cultural Foundation and “I Pomeriggi Musicali” of Milan. The Ministry has eventually acknowledged the great quality and national and international value of the Festival, also thanks to its long history. MITO will be inaugurated in Turin on Monday 3 September at the Teatro Regio at the presence of the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities Alberto Bonisoli; and Tuesday 4 at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra directed by American Marin Alsop and the participation of world- famous star violinist, Julia Fischer. During the 16 days of music in each of the two cit- ies, a total of 125 performances and events will take place, all of them programmed to be enjoyed by a wide audience. Tickets are available at Teatro Dal Verme, Via San Giovanni sul Muro 2; tel. +39.02.87905201; bigliet- [email protected]; www.ticketone. Their cost ranges from a minimum of €3 to a maxi- mum of €30. 19.00: Art exhibition inauguration. “Tightrope Walking and Its Wordless Shadow”, the first solo exhibi-tion by the Korean artist Haegue Yang, presents the wide range of expressive media that distinguishes his art: from collage to video, from performing sculptures to large installations. The main theme is his search for the “inexpressible”: the urgency to create a language whose potentiality is similar to tightrope walking, where every movement is much more than dynamic; it is charged with a tension that evokes strong emotions and perceptions. • Lombardy lakesLago di Como The famous lakeside city is just an hour from Milan by train, and so it is an attrac-tive possibility for a day’s excursion. The service “A Friend in Mi-lan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it your-self, take a train from the Stazione Nord sta-tion, in Piazza Cador-na, to Como Lago, a station positioned right on the lakeside www.trenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake, and a bus to Bellagio offers a cheap and picturesque alternative to boat transport. Info from the Como tourist office, tel.+39031304137, www.visitcomo.eu. Ferry info www.navigazionelaghi.it

Lago MaggioreIt is the second largest lake in It-aly, extended for about 65 kilome-tres (40 miles). The climate is mild both in sum-mer and winter, producing Medi-terranean vege-tation, with many gardens growing

rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazi-one Stazione Centrale or Stazione Porta Garibaldi to Stresa www.lenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake. http://http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/index.asp

• Driving, parkingWhenever you leave your car unattended, make sure that there are no bags, cameras, wallets etc. in sight inside. To enter the city centre (the area within the so-called “Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri 7.30-19.30, Thur 7.30-18.00. For further info, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Saturday after-noons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.00; Sun 10.15-13.15/14.00-17.30), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and tobacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attendants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratching the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run car-parks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Met-ro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. Don’t leave your car in areas marked by the tow-away symbol, or in areas marked by yellow lines (areas reserved for residents). If your car should be clamped or towed away, you will have to contact the Poli-zia Locale (traffic wardens), whose offices are in Piazza Beccaria 19 (MM1/3 Duomo), tel. 02.02.08. Keep dipped headlights on during the daytime.

• European Emergency Tel. Number 112. In case of stolen goods or documents, you will need to contact the police station, Questura, in Via Fatebenefra-telli 11 (M3 Turati), tel. 02.62.261.

• Guided toursPersonalized tours are offered by “A Friend in Milan” (see space last page) or www.friendinmilan.co.uk. “Autostradale” runs a three-hour coach tour every day except Mondays, starting at 9.30, in Piazza Duomo (in front of the Cathedral). It includes a visit to the Last Supper, and to the most important monuments. Cost €75 per person. Info at www.autostradale.it. “Zani Viaggi” runs a coach sightseeing. Info from their office in Foro Bonaparte 76, tel. 02.867.131, www.za-niviaggi.it. The “Centro Guide” provides official guides for tours for up to 25 people, in various languages. Tel. +39 3485660758, or www.centroguidemilano.net.

• Personal identityIt is a good idea to have your passport or ID card with you at all times, as you may be asked for it in the most sur-prising of situations (using a library, Internet café, etc.)

• PostagePost offices are marked with a yellow “PT” sign. The cen-tral post office for letters, parcels etc. is in Via Cordu-sio 4, open Mon-Fri 8.00-19.00; Sat 8.30-12.00, Sun closed. The post office is for postal account payments, money changing etc. Most other post offices are open in the morning only, Mon-Fri 8.00-14.00, Sat 9.30-13.00. • Public transportATM. Runs metro, buses and trams. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (news-agents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some sta-tions), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. ATM Infopoint are in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Lo-reto and Romolo Metro stations, open 7.45-20.00 Sun 10.15-13.15/14.00-17.30The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Met-ro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams. The magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey. The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first frank-ing: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Met-ro system consists of 5 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), 5 (lilac) and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). Metro trains run from around 6.15 until 00.30. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large interchange car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (M1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (M2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fiera trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, +390248607607 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it.

• RailwaysFS (Ferrovie dello Stato). Train information can be obtained from the information office at the Central Station (Stazione Centrale), or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that open date train tickets should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, try the option to write date and time of your journey in a corner of the ticket, using a pen. If you booked a seat, on your ticket the date is already printed, so it is not necessery to franke it.For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes af-ter departure. For the differently abled and people with sight problems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 800906060, operating every day, 06.45-21.30; or +3902323232FNM (Ferrovie Nord) Is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. An info office is in the Cadorna sta-tion, My Link Point Mon to Sun 7.10-20.45 www.trenord.it. Ferrovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to vari-ous locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Mal-pensa airport. See www.trenord.it

• Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro dur-ing the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the nor-mal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have nothing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financ-ing organized crime.

• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line estimates at www.milanotaxi.it

• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). The vital re-lationship between ancient and modern, betwe-en tradition and innovation, comes alive thanks to original and evocative settings that enhance the artists’ creativity.

• From 7 September to 4 November. “Tightrope Walking and Its Wordless Shadow”, the first solo exhibition by the Korean artist Hae-gue Yang, presents the wide range of expressive media that distinguishes his art: from collage to video, from performing sculptures to large in-stallations. The show is divided into three recur-ring environments, such as the interest in ab-straction and geometry; the movement and per-formativity; the relationship between “folding” and “unfolding”, which the artist explores as in-terconnected practices. The main theme is his search for the “inexpressible”: the urgency to create a language whose potentiality is similar to tightrope walking, where every movement is much more than dynamic; it is charged with a tension that evokes strong emotions and per-ceptions.

As befits the nature of this Museum, this is a “focus” on a lesser-known aspect of the artist’s work: between 1967 and part of the seventies, Bonalumi designed and re-alized large-size works, such as the exhibition “The image space” of 1967 held in Foligno, the installation at the Dortmund museum in 1968, the personal room at the XXXV Venice Biennale in 1970, and whole sets for ballets of the early seventies.

Thousands of works lead the visitor into the cosmology of the “five worlds” conceived by the artist: a singular repre-sentation of reality composed by images, picto-grams, icons, codes, signs, symbols and colours.

Inside a former burial ground of the antique Milanese Hospital, the video work of the artist Shirin Neshat entitled “Pulse” is flanked by “Terram anima caelum”, Henry Timi’s site-specific installation that en-hances the splendid frescoed sky on the vaults. The triangulation among these realities, con-temporary art and historical and artistic heri-tage of the city, finds its correspondence also in the story of Pulse: the song invites the visi-tor to overcome all barriers, both physical and linguistic, in an intimate setting.
