Mrs Debra Walls | Principal Persevering to the very end …

The Bible, as the Word of God, reflects on the notion of perseverance as an ideal we should value at all times and strive to reflect in our lives. Looking back on our past, we understand that whilst we are made in God’s image and filled with the Holy Spirit, there are times we become out of sync with God’s ordered and purposefully designed plans.

Part of our lack of perseverance comes from not being in communion with God every day, for it is this which allows us to better accept what comes our way and to keep going. At times it may be that we are being challenged to step beyond

a place of comfort and safety, but if we look back at what God has already done for us; He is beckoning us forward, He is beckoning us to Himself, to persevere, to take up the challenge.

Therefore, “lift up your heads to the coming King; bow before Him and adore Him …” for He is the way, the only truth and the only life. We are encouraged to keep persevering, to endure, to keep our eyes firmly fixed on the Lord and Saviour of our lives; we do this by remembering what He has already done for us. He has chosen us and saved us as the “great Shepherd of His sheep”.

The Bible is filled with references to perseverance, encouraging us to understand that Jesus has gone before us, yet is with us:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 5-8

Mrs Kerry Paterson | Head of Junior School Welcome to Term 1, Week 7

This week our Junior School Bible focus is “Jesus Heals”, reading from John 5:1-16. The big idea is: Jesus shows His identity and compassion by healing people. To desire to help the children discover that Jesus always uses His power to do good, and that He wants to help us. Our Bible verse is, “Jesus said, ‘I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won’t be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life’”. John 8:12 (CEV)

National Anti–Bullying Day – Thursday 16 March 2017

Let us be clear what bullying is and is not. The national definition of bullying for Australian schools states:

“Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.” www:bullyingnoway.gov.au

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

• Mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance);

• Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection;

• One-off acts of meanness or spite;

• Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.

Bullying has three main features:

• It involves a misuse of power in a relationship;

• It is ongoing and repeated; and

• It involves behaviours that can cause harm.

We believe that everyone; students, teachers and parents, should thrive here at the College feeling supported and safe. If students feel threatened, minimised or unsafe, we encourage them to:

1. Say stop with firm kind words;

2. Walk away;

3. Tell an adult – Teachers, Parents, Head of School (when we know, we can act);

4. Do not be a bystander – act to support your friend by telling a teacher.

This week we congratulate Student Representative Council Members

Each class has voted and chosen their representatives. They are:

Chairperson: Ruby Jamieson ; Councillors: Jasmyn Brettoner, Grace Hayden, Summer Leonard, Jessica Lewis, Rosalie Stuart, Ellia Turner; School Captains: Jonas Black, Glori Pembroke; School Prefects: Angelique Avenant, Julien Droguett, Mitchell Fyfe, Lauren Goodey, Jamin Hope and Stella Newman

KDL: Zoe Donnelly; KG: Lara French; KP: Alleah Milne; 1MM: Alyssa Cahill, Chase Conway; 1PB: Ezekiel Cohen, Grace Melohn; 1SM: Lillybelle Cashin, Sarah Tang; 2W: Spencer Ferris, Amelia Smith; 2D: Adrian Gnutzmann, Lachlan Fitzgerald; 2B: Bronte McKee, Madison O’Brien; 3P: Kyne Baird, Sienna Healey; 3W: Mina Brisebois, Joshuah Procter; 3/4D: Clinton Fourie, Hannah Steventon; 4S: Tanika Maxwell, Elijah Watson; 4H: Olivia Edwards, Thomas Lewis; 5B: Grace Cockburn, Noah Todd; 5M: Rex Allwood, Imogen Wilson; 5/6L Emma Duggan, Dusty Piper; 6M: Charlotte Hughes, Paige Van Es; 6P: Gemma Loneragan, Taj Lyons.

Please join me in congratulating our representatives as they learn and grow in skills of leadership for 2017.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary School

Our core value this week is perseverance. We really need to work on this in our society today. We need to teach each other how to keep going when things are hard. It really is in relationship with God that we are able to keep going when things seem so big and overwhelming.

This is a great quote from the past that really calls for us to be strong and never give in. “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently

overwhelming might of the enemy.” Winston S. Churchill, Never Give In! The Best of Winston Churchill's Speeches.

Year 12 Half Yearly Exams

Our first big exams are nearly here, so this is a reminder for any parent of a Year 12 student they need to be spending quality time studying for these very important Assessment Tasks. Revision of notes, practice questions and more of the same needs to be undertaken now and should be continued by the students for the rest of the year. Students need to be studying at least 2 - 3 hours for every subject every week. Not just the week before the exams.

Hats

Just a reminder that Secondary School students must have a Green Point Christian College hat at school at all times and must wear it when they are in the sun. If they do not have a hat at school a student will be given a uniform detention.

Athletics Carnival

Our Athletics Carnival is next Thursday, 23 March 2017. All parents are welcome. If you would like to help with the running of the day, please contact the PDHPE department. It is a fun day for all. Please note that it is a normal school day and all students are expected to attend. If a student needs to catch a bus from school, they need to put their names down at the student window before next Tuesday.

Vaccination Packs for Year 7

Vaccination Packs for Year 7 injections are being sent home this week with students. If you have nor received your pack by Friday 17 March 2017, they can be collected from the College Office. Please read the information carefully and return the completed forms to the College Office by Monday 27 March 2017.

Questacon Smart Skills

On Wednesday, students from Years 7 - 9 took part in an incursion from the travelling Questacon team.

The Questacon Smart Skills Landing Challenge workshop presents students with the task of digitally prototyping and then building a quadcopter landing platform using simple materials. It takes students through the innovation process of think, make, try and refine, allowing them to explore different ways to solve problems and helping them to build confidence in trying and testing new ideas.

Term 1 And 2 Athletics Training for Primary Students

This term the Primary School were planning to run Athletics training sessions on Friday afternoons for Sport. Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather conditions, we were unable to begin this program. We have a number of activities that focus on developing the skills in both Track and Field events, such as using agility courses, step ladders, mini hurdles and parachutes to improve sprint performance, as well as having Olivia Tauro (Commonwealth Games Relay Runner) giving coaching on sprint technique.

Years 4 - 6 classes are currently involved in athletics training during PE with Sport in Schools on Thursdays, but we are looking forward to the beginning of our Friday afternoon training sessions.
