Teacher/ administrator driven: Representatives from all faculties provides their recommendations on the spaces.

User driven/ user evaluated: Users’ needs and preferences were collected and the information directs the learning environment development.

A new classroom (LSK 514)

Use of digital devices: Electric sockets, WiFi connectivity. two projectors (and screens)

Flexible and mobile facilities: Two-seater desks with lockable wheels, stackable chairs, variation in classroom furniture

Group work: Tables and chairs in clusters.

Results:Highest occupancy rate was found in information commons (~50%).WiFi connections, electric sockets, quiet environment were the most important features in library.‘Quietness’ was the most commonly mentioned advantage of the library.

Informal learning spaces (ILS) are areas unattended by staff but equipped with furniture or facilities that engage students in self-learning.

Study locations in CUHK: Esther Lee Building, ELB (2009) Lee Shau Kee Building, LSK (2010) 3 canteens (2010)

Results:~90% of users in ILS were carrying out learning activities. (preparation for class, group discussions, self-studying, etc.)~30% of users brought their own notebooks to ILS.~75% of users had used WiFi in ILS.

Significance: ILSs in CUHK are important; Space should support use of technology
