• Initiating Writing– Purpose is to help the child find a
meaningful topic, understand his/her purpose, decide on an interesting genre, etc.
• Writing Process– Purpose is to find out where child is in
writing process and what tools/strategies they need to continue to develop his/her writing
• Writing Well– Purpose is to apply what the child has
learned about the writer’s craft and to use the writing process to revise, edit, and publish a composition for an audience

• Research: Find out what child is trying to do as a writer.
• Decide: Think about what you have learned and make a plan that will best help the child.
• Teach: Explain, model, and practice the strategy that will help the writer.
• Link: Connect what writer has learned to his/her future writing and ask him/her to try it out.

• Jeff Anderson (Mechanically Inclined author) uses “Invitations to Notice” as a warm-up activity at the beginning of writer’s workshop to help students learn to pay close attention to the conventions, style, and craft of writing.
• They can be used as an alternative to Daily Oral Language to facilitate connections between writer's craft and grammar instruction.
• These quick exercises involve a whole-group examination of a sentence(s) as a mentor text, focused practice, and discussion, all in just a few minutes.
