International cooperation:
an Italian – French experience for
resource sharing
The 15th IFLA International Interlending and Document
Supply Conference
No Library Left Behind: Cross-Border Resource Sharing
Paris, 04 - 06 October 2017
Italian background
2
Number of libraries of all types per region: total 13,693
National Library Service (SBN)
cooperation between state, local and university authorities shared cataloguing and standard ISO-ILL interoperability to guarantee both national and local services
3
Catalogs and services interoperability
ILL-SBN interoperates with Italian and foreign ISO-ILL compliant ILS
SBN OPAC interoperates with Italian and foreign catalogs Z39.50 compliant
4
SBN in numbers
The SBN network
Over than 6.100 Libraries of all types (state, local, university)
99 local hubs
The SBN OPAC
16.531.632 bibliographic records
86.949.480 holdings
5
What is ILL-SBN?
free web based service for interlibrary loan and document delivery
available to all interested libraries: single libraries, system hubs, centralized loan services, Italian and foreign libraries
http://prestito.iccu.sbn.it/ILLWeb/servlets/ILL
6
What is ILL-SBN?
integrated with the OPAC SBN catalog
able to integrate with other catalogs
able to interoperate with lending systems and ILS that use ISO-ILL compliant systems
7
ISO-ILL interoperability between ILL-SBN partner libraries and the Bibliothèque Universitaire et Nationale de Strasbourg
Our use case aims to highlight:
simple use of integrated service
easy communication between partner libraries
monitoring of all information steps
immediate updating of various management environments
8
Use of the integrated system - Interlibray Loan
Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg (BNU) as requesting library
Biblioteca nazionale di Roma as supplying library
9
Bibliothèque Universitaire et Nationale de Strasbourg - BNU - as requesting library ( Sebina next integrated software)
10
E BNU sends the ILL request
Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Roma - BVE - as Supplying library (ILL-SBN web interface)
11
E BVE receives the ILL request
Requesting library (BNU): the status of ILL request is shipped - Next status is: received
12
E BVE ships the document
BNU will reply: document received
Supplying library (BVE): tracking of the ILL request
13
BVE monitors the request's iter
Use of the integrated system – Interlibray Loan
Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg (BNU) as requesting library
Biblioteca generale dell’Università di Trieste as supplying library.
14
Search the SBN catalogue to find a document and submit an ILL request
15
Choice of the supplying library
16
E
choice of Trieste as supplying library
ILL-SBN creates an interlibrary loan request automatically including the bibliographic and location data from the selected record and redirects the ILL request both to the requesting library and to the supplying library
17
The management systems of the two partner libraries update
automatically.
BNU – requesting library
18
E
ILL SBN redirects the ILL request to BNU (requesting library)
The management systems of the two partner libraries update automatically. Biblioteca generale di Trieste - supplying library
19
E
ILL SBN redirects the ILL request to Trieste (supplying library)
Supplying library (Trieste) sends the book to the requesting library (BNU)
The status of ILL request is: shipped
20
E
BNU requesting library receives the book and notifies the user.
The status of ILL request is received
21
BNU receives the book
ILL SBN acts as a bridge
in this case the request is automatically transferred to ILL SBN from SBN OPAC
ILL SBN acts as a bridge between the management softwares of the two ILL SBN partner libraries
the libraries handle requests using their own software
22
Use of the integrated system – Document Delivery
Biblioteca di scienze letterarie e filologiche dell’Università di Torino as requesting library
Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg (BNU) as supplying library
23
Requesting library: Biblioteca di scienze letterarie e filologiche dell’Università di Torino (Sebina OL integrated software)
E Torino sends the DD request
Supplying library: Bibliothèque Nationale Universitaire de Strasbourg (Sebina Next integrated software)
25
E
BNU receives the request and sends a copy of the requested document
BNU supplying library: tracking the DD request
26
Benefits of integrated system
searching the SBN union catalog, locate and
simply apply for a document in the same way for all ILL-SBN libraries avoiding double work in processing ILL requests
with ILL-SBN libraries tracking the entire ILL transaction
27
Benefits of integrated system
faster processing of ILL requests
handling more requests in integrated mode, thus ensuring comprehensive statistics
28
Benefits of integrated system
ISO ILL interoperability greatly reduces some of the librarians’ tasks
requests and ILL transactions can be managed on the same system
Currently, ILL transactions between BNU and Italian libraries are only handled via e-mail and, as a result, there’s no way to check ILL service, nor to provide accurate statistics about international services
29
Which is your management system?
Libraries use many different ILS
30
What kind of institution does your Library belong to?
44% University Libraries 39% City/local Libraries 8% State Libraries
Libraries belong to many different institutions
31
Do you provide International ILL/DD service?
A majority of Libraries offers International ILL/DD service (79,5%)
32
Do you believe a better interaction between online catalogs and Library services might improve and simplify ILL/DD service to both users and librarians?
• 81% strongly agrees • 17% agrees • 1,5% slightly agrees
33
Towards a wider cooperation

Aleph
Alma
ILL-SBN allows to extend the cooperation to libraries that use different applications and communication protocols according to technical specifications of interoperability
• 664 Italian libraries currently belong to the ILL-SBN service. • 253 Sebina libraries are integrated via http • 64 Aleph and Alma libraries are integrated with IPIG • the remaining libraries are working on the web interface
The use of ISIL standard code allows to overcome different library identifiers employed in various ILL systems, resulting in smooth communication in both national and international ILL transactions
35
Towards a wider cooperation
36
Towards a wider cooperation
IDEM
IDEntity Management for Federation Access
ILL-SBN will soon be a service provided within the IDEM federation interconnected with the EDUGAIN interfederation
Towards a wider cooperation
integration can be effectively extended to foreign
libraries
standard interoperability eliminates language
barriers and software differences
there is the need of best practices and policies
agreements among partner libraries
37
Towards a wider cooperation
Our collaborative experience outlines an effective option to cooperate between Italian and foreign libraries, and suggests that: mutual effort and commitment of libraries to
progressively integrate services, data and identity management in the web
is the first step towards sharing common rules and policies and towards the achievement of that ideal objective defined by IFLA
38
Towards a wider cooperation
the idea of the global library, a networked resource sharing mechanism that enables access to resources
through the collaboration of libraries worldwide
