The Feast of the Epiphany is a reminder for us 21st Century Christian/Catholics that the birth of Jesus was to bring into the world a savior for the Gentiles as well as the Jews. This reality carries with it an ob-ligation. As noted in the "Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity" from Vatican II (14): "A vast field for the apostolate has opened up on the national and in-ternational levels where the laity especially assist with their Christian wisdom. In loyalty to their coun-try and in faithful fulfillment of their civic obliga-tions, Catholics should feel themselves obliged to promote the true common good. Thus they should make the weight of their opinion felt in order that civil authority may act with justice and that legisla-tion may conform to moral precepts and the common good." One of the realistic concerns for those who truly care for the world in which our grandchildren and their children will live ought to be Climate Change. This has been extensively addressed by Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter, "On Care for Our Common Home"; a notation (82): "Yet it would also be mis-taken to view other living beings as mere objects subjected to arbitrary human domination. When na-ture is viewed solely as a source of profit and gain, this has serious consequences for society. This vision of 'might is right' has engendered immense inequali-ty, injustice and acts of violence against the majority of humanity, since resources end up in the hands of the first comer or the most powerful: the winner takes all." (Reading the entire Letter increases one's understanding of the Church's position on this issue. Without being political, one must be diligent in re-sponse to the potential impact of the enactment of the proposed policies of the incoming administration on the Christian/Catholic pursuit of the Common Good and the health of "Our Common Home". Any Comments or input please contact: Doug Harper [email protected]
