cret of its power and begins to break down any fear sur-rounding it. This helps a victim-survivor on the path to be-ing free from the effects of abuse and enables the church and other institutions to take appropriate action to keep others safe. From the Desk of Father MacFrom the Desk of Father Mac Catholic Moral Teaching on COVID-19 Vaccines As the Pfizer & Moderna vaccines against COVID-19 become available, it is critically important that Catholics and others have an accurate understanding of how these vaccines may be viewed from the perspective of Catholic moral teaching and tradition. Vaccine development and production over the last several decades has often relied upon some cell lines that regretta-bly were originally developed from cells obtained from two fetuses that were aborted in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are not dependent on these cell lines. They were developed using different technology rely-ing on ribonucleic acid (RNA) from the virus itself. Even though the vaccines may have been tested using compro-mised cell lines, this does not establish a connection be-tween the vaccine recipient and the abortion. Consequent-ly, use of these vaccines is ethically sound. On December 21, 2020, the Vatican’s doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), issued a statement noting it is “morally acceptable” for Catholics to take vaccines against COVID-19. Among other things, the CDF stated:

"All vaccinations recognized as clinically safe and ef-fective can be used in good conscience with the cer-tain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constitute formal cooperation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines de-rive” … “the morality of vaccination depends not only on the duty to protect one's own health, but also on the duty to pursue the common good." "In the absence of other means to stop or even prevent the epidemic, the common good may recommend vac-cination, especially to protect the weakest and most exposed."

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops call vaccination “an act of charity toward the other members of our com-munity. In this way, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and part of our moral responsibility for the common good.” The California Catholic Conference of Bishops strongly encour-ages Catholics to receive a safe and effective COVID-19 vac-cine for the sake of oneself, our loved ones, and the com-mon good. If some of the faithful choose not to take the vaccine for reasons of conscience, the Vatican says those persons "must do their utmost to avoid … becoming vehicles for the transmission of the infectious agent. “DRIVE-THROUGH” MASS &

HOLY COMMUNION NOW AVAILABLE!

For those who do not feel comfortable attending outdoor Masses in person, we offer some new ways to partic-ipate in Mass from the comfort and safety of your vehicle or

from home and receive Holy Communion afterwards.

LISTEN TO FM BROADCAST We have recently acquired an FM Transmitter which enables us to broadcast the audio feed of our Masses over FM radio. To use this option, please park in the Ventura Blvd. lot and tune your car radio to 88.3 on your FM dial. You will then be able to listen to the audio feed of Mass. After Mass, please pull your car around to the steps on the West side of the par-ish hall facing the Ventura parking lot where a minister will distribute Holy Communion to you while you remain in the safety of your vehicle. The FM audio feed will be available for the Saturday 4PM Out-door Mass, the Sunday 8AM and 10AM Outdoor Masses, and the Sunday 12NOON Livestream Mass from inside the church as well as weekday Masses Monday-Saturday at 7:30AM. WATCH THE LIVESTREAM We have set up a new wireless network which will allow you to view livestream Masses on your mobile device from the comfort of your vehicle. Please park in the Ventura Blvd. parking lot. From your mobile device, connect to the SCJMass wireless network and navigate to the Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StCyrilofJerusalem where you can view the Mass. After Mass, please pull your car around to the steps on the West side of the parish hall facing the Ventura parking lot where a minister will distribute Holy Communion to you while you remain in the safety of your vehicle. We offer livestream Mass on Sundays at 12PM. This Mass is held inside the church without a congregation. We also offer livestream of our Outdoor Masses Monday through Friday at 7:30AM.
