Thermometer probe and digitalreadout combined into one unitThe stainless steel probe and digital readout areixed together and calibrated as a system. Theaccuracy speciication is easy to understand sinceit includes all uncertainty components, includingdrit, or up to one year1. The large backlit LCDdisplay rotates 90 making it easy to read romany angle. A user-conigurable stability/trendindicator lets you know when your temperature isstable enough to record an accurate measurement.A user-settable auto-o unction extends typical

battery lie to three hundred hours. A low-batteryindicator and stop-measure unction preventerroneous measurements rom being made due tolow battery lie. A simple three-point calibrationunction allows you to easily and accuratelycalibrate the Stik Thermometer. Data logging tointernal memory o up to 10,000 time-stampedmeasurements is optionally available.

Why calibrate processtemperature sensors?Because temperature greatly eects theaccuracy o a volumetric measurement, process

manuacturers o chemical, pharmaceutical, ood orpetroleum products require accurate temperaturemeasurementsespecially or processes wherequality or custody transer are regulated bygovernment agencies. Since all temperaturesensors are subject to drit with time, regularcalibration or veriication against a reliablereerence thermometer is required. Finding areerence thermometer that is accurate, repeatableand robust, however, can be challenging.

Whats wrong with myreerence thermometer?Industrial reerence thermometers availableon the market today, such as mercury-in-glassthermometers (or ASTM thermometers) andportable electronic thermometers are useul, butboth come with inherent problems. Althoughaccurate and repeatable, mercury thermometers areragile. The risk o a mercury spill poses potentialhazards to the environment and to the health opersonnel. Many o the United States and EuropeanUnion countries have already banned their use inindustrial applications. Some organizations havereplaced their mercury thermometers with moredurable portable electronic thermometers, only todiscover that the RTD probes lack the repeatability

and dependability required o a legitimatereerence thermometer.

The best alternative tomercury thermometersThe Fluke Stik Thermometer is accurate, stableand durable, making it the best alternative tomercury thermometers and existing electronicthermometers. The thin-ilm RTD sensorincorporates the same characteristics o otherpremium reerence thermometers designed byHart Scientiic, but it is more robust and lesssusceptible to drit. Accuracy and repeatability, however, are not sacriiced or improved durability.

    Using a glass-stem mercury- or spirit-illed

thermometer at dierent immersion depths, orat signiicantly dierent ambient temperaturesrom which it was calibrated, may require theapplication o emergent-stem corrections that canbe tedious but necessary to calculate an accuratemeasurement. This isnt required with the StikThermometer. The sensor o the 1551A Exrequires a minimum immersion depth o only7 cm (2.8 in), with no appreciable eect on themeasured temperature due to heat loss throughstem conduction.

Some digital thermometers can become lessaccurate when used outside a narrow range oambient temperatures. This isnt the case or

the Stik Thermometer. Your measurementremains accurate in ambient temperaturesrom -10 C to 50 C (14 F to 122 F).With a superior probe design combinedwith electronic unctions that assistaccurate measurement, the StikThermometer surpasses thecapabilities o other digitalthermometers and isthe perect substituteor your mercurythermometers.1In order to minimize sensordrit, the probe shouldalways be protectedrom mechanical shock.

Easily power up with the presso a button and ater a short sel-test, start making measurements

within seconds. The power key isslightly recessed inside the plasticmolded case to protect againstaccidental power o.

Max/Min/Trend/Up key allows youto see the maximum or minimumtemperature since the most recentpower up. The trend unction tellsyou the positive or negative rateo temperature change in degreesper minute.

The Setup/Down key lets you stepthrough submenus and adjustield values down.

The Enter/Backlight key allowsyou to accept changes while inthe setup menus or turn on thebacklight.

The stability/trend indicator tellsyou i your temperature sourceis trending upward or downward(pictured trending up). A latbar indicates that thetemperature source andthermometer are stable withinthe user-selected stability window(0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 10.0).

Five reasons to replace mercury thermometers

    4. Mercury thermometers cannot be

adjusted ater calibration. The actualtemperature must be calculated byapplying corrections to the measuredtemperature. This costs time and issusceptible to calculation error. Adigital thermometer does the mathor youthe displayed temperatureaccurately represents the actualmeasured temperature.

    5. Emergent-stem corrections mayalso be required i the mercurythermometer is not used under thesame conditions under which it was

calibrated. A digital thermometerdoesnt require that you matchcalibration conditions to achievean accurate measurement. Youreonly required to meet the minimumimmersion requirementswhich isonly 7 cm (2.8 in) in the case othe 1551A Ex.

    1. Since the Stik Thermometer does not

contain mercury, it is not subjectto government-imposed bans.Government agencies worldwide haveeither banned or are seeking to banthe use and transportation o industrialmercury thermometersthis seems tobe a growing trend.

    2. The stainless steel probe sheath o theStik Thermometer is ar more robustthan the glass stem o a mercurythermometer and better suited orindustrial environments. And since theStik thermometer does not contain

mercury, the risk o an accidentalmercury spill is eliminated.

    3. When considering cost o ownership,a digital thermometer is less expensivethan a mercury thermometer. Witha mercury thermometer, you eitherinvest in equipment or you hire out toclean up ater a mercury spill.
