Cinco de Mayo celebration reaches diverse populations
by Lisette BeltranEcho reporter
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independent Day. In fact, it is a holiday in remembrance and celebration of the victory in the Battle of Puebla. On Thursday, May 5th, Bremen had a Cinco de Mayo celebration that showed true Latino culture. Sponsored by Mrs. Ar-güelles, in cooperation with Ms. Giron, the celebration included authentic tacos, Mexi-can drinks and desserts. There was also a DJ who provided the attendees with a mix of different Hispanic music to dance to. “I was expecting about 100-150 peo-ple to show up even before we announced it” stated Mrs. Arguelles, Spanish teacher. To everyone’s surprise, there were actually about 400 people that showed up to cele-brate this Mexican holiday! “There were people of all ages! Families, friends, kids, Bremen kids and
teachers (attended the event)” exclaimed Arguelles. Another part of the celebration was a special dance, choreographed by Mrs. Gi-ron. There was also collaboration between the district schools. The group of teens in-cluded some from Bremen as well as some from Oak Forest High School. Arguelles added, “It was a great learning experience for us. Bremen kids got to work together with our ‘rivals’ from Oak Forest.” The DJ played an array of Mexican and American music. When the dance floor was open, people did not hesitate to get up and dance! “It was great! My favorite part was when everybody started dancing.” said Bre-men student MeAhnna Evans. Arguelles added, “It was fantastic! I can’t wait to do it again next year!”Overall, Bremen’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration was a huge success, exposing others to the rich Mexican culture through music and food.
Programs reward students’ behavior
by Omar GordilloEcho reporter
With great achievement, comes great reward. Many Bremen students take pride in all that they do at school proving the Bremen motto of “We Have Pride” to be true! It is a goal of many students at Bremen to earn an education and not only meet expectations, but exceed those expectations. Helping promote good grades, atten-dance and behavior is a continual process en-forced by many staff members at BHS. One way to reinforce the student success is what is known as “Braves Bash.” At the end of every year, Bremen hosts its Braves Brash to reward those who rarely take trips to the deans’ office and have flawless disciplinary logs. Events like these encourage students to exceed! Students who are constantly down at dean’s office suffer the consequences. “When we find ourselves dealing with more issues, our task is to find a way to fix that,” Dean Curtin states. “Braves Bash” is an event to do just that! This year’s Braves Bash was held May 12. More than 650 students qualified for this fun-filled event. Braves Bash is already in the works for next year as well. For the 2011-2012 school year the bash will not only include the exami-nation of behavior logs, but it will also include beneficial factors for those who are academi-cally successful. The objective of these changes is to reach kids. The very purpose behind honors assemblies is to encourage the fraction of the student body that aren’t being honored to achieve these ranks and become the great stu-dents the teachers and deans want them to be. Hopefully, Braves Bash can also encourage students to exceed, in body and mind.

Edwards wins first place in Congressional Art Competition
by Omar GordilloEcho reporter
Demi Edwards recently had the honor of winning the Jesse Jackson Jr. Congressional Art Competition. Demi, along with about 40 other competitors, sought to win the competition. The win-ner would have their submitted art piece on display in Cannon Tunnel for a year. “I still can’t believe it,” Edwards says. “It hasn’t regis-tered to me. Maybe it will on the plane.” In addition to having her
work displayed, Edwards won two plane tickets to actually see it in Cannon Tunnel at Wash-ington DC. The piece itself, entitled “Glamorous?,” carried a central theme. “The reality of today is that smoking, although often portrayed by a number of icons as sexy, is actually both ugly and nasty,” Edwards said. “The piece depicts the sharp con-trast between the expectation of smoking and its reality.” Edwards selected said theme because of the personal conflicts she has witnessed with
her family and friends. Demi Edwards is the first at Bremen to win first place in the Jesse Jackson Jr. Congres-sional Art Competition. Other students have competed before and have only reached second place and honorable mention. Mrs. Reid was proud to share the moment with Demi’s family the moment Demi her-self found out. “My mom was bawling her eyes out!” Edwards said. Demi hopes to travel with her mother to DC over the summer to see her award-win-ning work on display.
Visitors admire artwork displayed in the Bremen IMC.This year’s Advanced Placement Studio Art show was held on May 4. This is the 13th year that the show has been in existence. The show featured outstanding artwork of 14 students, many who have been accepted to art programs in college.

Attention all “ECHO”, “ECHO”, “ECHO” readers…… next year the Echo Newspaper will be launching an online Echo website!!! Not only will students and staff be able to read the newspaper regularly like they have been doing, but they will also have access to it online as well. Much credit is given to freshman, Ja-cob Zarobsky whose idea was to create this website. “The whole goal of creating a web-site for the Echo was to bring a greater feel-ing of unity among the school. In addition, creating the website helps to spread the news about what’s happening at Bremen,” says Zarobsky. The creation of the Bremen Echo Website is fairly technical; it was created on open source technologies that are made for an enjoyable experience for writers and readers alike. For more tech-savvy users, the Echo website uses a Word Press and Buddy Press backend with a Citizen Kane theme for an enjoyable reading experience. The website also gives readers the opportunity to comment on, or even discuss, their opinions about the articles written. This will help the authors/reporters know what the school prefers to read more. Also, communication will increase and possibly be eligible for students to share. Moreover, we believe this website just may be exactly what is needed to in-crease the attention span of our readers and allow more people to get more involved with the Bremen Echo. The website offers more to students than they think, and is beneficial in many ways. Zarobsky said “We hope to add a so-cial network right from the start; but that’s still pending district approval.” The school can look forward to en-hanced interactivity, more income from ad-vertising, and a more unified school.

Stitching together a magazine is a task within itself. The Oracle staff puts much effort into not only composing the annual magazine, but also puts energy into selecting the pieces and works that are actu-ally published….and the group, as well as the group advisor all truly seems to enjoy doing this! “Working with the Oracle staff is something I really enjoy. This group of kids is just amazing…not only are they creative and talented in the arts, but they are hard working kids who are involved in other ac-tivities, sports, and jobs as well.” says Mrs. Sala, the Oracle advisor. This year the staff members include Molly Feil, James Krech, Emily Dillman, Omar Gordillo, Chancey Contreras, Emily Smith, and Julie Faltisek. The Oracle group started entire pro-cess this year by prompting for submissions. The Oracle staff meets and goes through an entire binder that consists of poems, songs, and narratives. Ultimately, only a few are selected through individual voting. The next step is to publish the chosen works. After voting, the most difficult part in the development begins- layout. The pro-
gram itself is an intricacy. Molly Fiel is def-initely talented as far as designing goes; she can be credited with designing the layout from scratch. It is quite a geometric chal-lenge to fit longer poems onto a page. “By the time we get all of our sub-missions, we are well into the final quarter of school. Now, it’s CRUNCH TIME! Lay-out of all the works is pretty involved in desktop publishing,” Mrs. Sala elaborated. The last phase of publishing is the actual printing process. “The actual printing is a slow, laborious process. The punching and binding is the fun part, mostly because you get to manipulate the final product to its fruition,” said Sala In the end, a magazine of about one hundred pages is sold. The art within the pages consist of pieces done in pencil, pen & ink, printmaking, pastel, oils, acrylics, plaster cloth, paper maché, ceramics, col-ored pencil, paper mosaic, scratch board, and mixed media. As for the written work, the maga-zine is mainly comprised of poems that fall under all sorts of categories. “Once the magazine is complete, it’s going to look incredible. I am humbled by the talents of the Bremen artists and writ-ers,” exclaimed Sala.

The time had come yet again for the Bremen Theatre to showcase another won-derful play. I do have to say that this year’s spring play, Aladdin Jr., was outstand-ing. Those of you who did not attend truly missed out on great acting, singing, and lots of humor! It may be hard to believe, but it had been four years, yes four, since a musical had been performed at Bremen. Drama director, Mr. Andrew Rybarczyk said, “I thought it was time to do a musical.” Based off my opinion of the show, Rybarczyk cer-tainly made the right choice. Of course every stage production requires countless hours of hard work, but musicals demand even more effort. There’s staging and lighting, set decorating, micro-phone checks, wardrobe, and makeup prep-arations. All of this, and you still have to master dance steps and songs! Speaking of songs, “Prince Ali” was by far the most difficult to perfect for the play according to Rybarczyk. There were so many different people involved in that number so it took more time. The long hours of practice proved to be worthwhile because every musical number kept the au-dience engaged in the show. A personal favorite song of mine from “Aladdin” was “A Whole New World.”
The Bremen actors who performed as Prin-cess Jasmine and Aladdin definitely did those characters justice with their stellar performances. The technical crew did an amazing job incorporating the ever-popular flying carpet during this song. The illusion possibly had the audience feeling as if they were flying through the starry night sky, too. Additionally, the beautiful costumes looked as if they could have come straight from the original movie! The costumes were actually “imported from India.” in-formed Rybarczyk. Talk about going the extra exotic mile! There is some new insider news to report to you Echo readers regarding the drama department next school year. “We’re going to have a secret play in the fall”, Rybarczyk revealed. This is a big deal because it is something new. The title of the production will be announced on the drama blog before the end of the 2010-2011 school year. Also, the Zombie High School will return again next year. However, there is a twist-the theme is “Prom Night.” This will be a continuation of the previous year’s event. There’s so much to look forward to already. Finally, I encourage you to support your fellow Braves in the drama depart-ment. If you don’t, you will miss out on witnessing remarkable talent.
Aladdin Jr. musical brings audience to New World

Track events challenge even the toughest
by Omar GordilloEcho reporter
Running a five minute mile is not easy work. Neither are hurdles or shot put and the discus throw. Bremen’s own track and field team continually push the boundaries of what they think their limits are. Sometimes the hardest part in any sport is believ-ing these boundaries can be bro-ken and that improvement is not farfetched. “Track is a long and chal-lenging season. The training can be quite grueling, and you are training for events that you can only be successful in when you push yourself beyond your own limits,” Coach Verble says. “Focus becomes increas-ingly important when you consid-er the challenges of being a track athlete and the other demands of a high school student.” Challenges among the team mainly involve the vague weather and the individual ath-letes’ school assignments. With two meets cancelled, some of the coaches’ struggle when their ath-letes demonstrate lack of perfor-mance at meets but exceed expec-tation during practices. “We can only be at our best if we put in the necessary work and block out any of the outside distractions,” Verble stated. “My coaching staff and I place high ex-pectations on our athletes and we constantly challenge them to be elite level performers on the track as well as in the classroom.” The track coaches expect an excellent performance from their runners and throwers and not a lackluster one. They hope a sea-son long training will be enough to steal the show at their South Suburban Conference.
Students are recognized for their awesome feats in sports all the time at Bremen High School. However, one must take special note of a unique award that looks at a student’s awesome capabilities on, and off the field. Bremen High School Se-nior, Ryan Anderl, was named an Old Spice Player of the Year for the 2010-2011 school year. The Old Spice Player of the Year mission is to motivate, inspire and recognize varsity high school football players who show outstanding ath-letic performance, strong leader-ship, and the will to win on and off the field. For the 10th straight year, the Old Spice Player of the Year program is being sponsored Proct-
er & Gamble’s Old Spice brand for thousands of football coaches and more than 10,000 high school football programs nationwide. Participating schools re-ceive product samples, press re-leases, other support materials. Schools also receive posters for use in the school locker room to
recognize team winners. P a r t i c i p a t i n g coaches name a weekly Old Spice Player of the Week after each game. We encourage the media to recognize these win-ners for their efforts. At the end of the season,
participating coaches nominate one Player of the Year from their teams. That player will represent his team and receive a certificate to commemorate his achievement. This player will also be eligible
to become one of our 50 national winners. All Players of the Year nominees will be considered by an awards committee for the honor of being one of our 50 Old Spice Players of the Year. In addition to receiving a plaque and other awards, the 50 national winners will be honored in a national print publication. Bremen Varsity Coach, Dan Stell, stated “Ryan was one of the toughest kids I’ve ever had the privilege to coach. Ryan is a kid that constantly led by example, on and off the field. I’ve witnessed Ryan physically dominate athletes twice his size since he was a fresh-men, due to his relentless work ethic rand heart. Ryan has never backed down from a challenge, and will continue to shock people that underestimate his will and de-termination for years to come.”
