01 bourgie hall 5th season.

Bourgie Hall – One of the Best-loved Concert Halls in QuebecIn just a few seasons, Bourgie Hall has become one of the best-loved concert halls in Quebec. Its beauty and its exceptional acoustics were obvious from the beginning, but with the passing months, audiences and musicians alike have grown to appreciate its unique personality as well. Looking back at all we have accomplished, the public’s applause and the record-breaking attendance, we are deeply moved and grateful.

For our fifth season, we will continue to treat our audiences to unique programming. We will pursue the presentation of the complete cycle of Bach’s cantatas, an initiative that has been received with unanimous enthusiasm; we will also shine the spotlight on another great composer, Franz Schubert; we will continue to introduce Montreal audiences to internationally renowned performers; we will premiere an original composition inspired by a work of art in the Museum’s collection; our offerings this season will also include jazz and world music; and of course we will present concerts in connection with the Museum’s major exhibitions, as well as events for the whole family… In short, a vast array of choices of the very highest calibre for music lovers to choose from!

Even though our concerts at Bourgie Hall continue to be at the heart of our activities, the Arte Musica Foundation’s mission also consists in bringing music to the whole Museum. We are very excited about our range of educational activities for all ages and invite you to consult our list of cultural offerings in both the Museum’s brochure Cultural Activities and on our website.

Bourgie Hall is a place for you to enjoy and to call your own. We look forward to welcoming you time and time again. More than anything else, we can’t wait to share a world of outstanding musical experiences with you!

Isolde LagacéGeneral and Artistic DirectorThe Arte Musica Foundation

Hitting All the Right Notes at Bourgie HallBourgie Hall has hosted over 600 concerts – an average of 150 performances each season – since its inauguration on September 26, 2011. When we add attendance to the many school matinees, lectures, film screenings, guided tours and workshops to this tally, it brings the total to over 200,000 people who came to the Museum specifically to attend these musical activities. The great success of the Arte Musica Foundation in residence at the Museum testifies to the excellence of this project initiated in 2008 by Pierre Bourgie. It is truly the only one of its kind in Canada! While many museums offer similar activities, very few boast a professional concert hall and fewer still have a foundation dedicated to music within their walls. In fact, to the best of our knowledge, we are unique.

The Foundation has grown in tandem with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, which, for the second consecutive year, in 2013-2014, welcomed over one million visitors – a 100% increase in five years and a record in Canada.

At the crossroads of visual arts, music and films on art, the Museum has become a multidisciplinary art centre – truly an innovative and winning formula.

We applaud Isolde Lagacé and her team, our collaborators and our partners for these achievements. Bravo! Nathalie BondilDirector and Chief CuratorThe Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

While the Beaver Hall Group shone a new light on urban experience in the field of visual arts, French Canadian composers were also beginning to waltz with modernity. The Hochelaga Trio plays three Quebec pieces that propel us into the musical world of the period extending from the 1920s to the 1940s. Tradition, influence and innovation are all features of the musical idiom of composers Rodolphe and André Mathieu, but also of an unfinished quartet by Auguste Descarries, performed in concert for the first time.

1920s Montreal Jazz Thursday, January 28 : 6 p.m.

STREETNIXJennifer Bell, saxophone and clarinetBill Mahar, trumpetDave Grott, tromboneChristopher Smith, tubaJim Doxas, drumsGuest: Luc Bouchard, banjo

The 1920s marked an important milestone in Montreal jazz history. Jazz, that truly north American art form, was still young. Montreal’s vibrant culture and the absence of Prohibition laws made the city a veritable magnet for American musicians who travelled north seeking work. They brought the jazz they loved with them, and shared that love with local musicians, laying the foundations of the Montreal jazz scene of today.

LES BORéADESFrancis Colpron, recorder and conductor

Concertos for Recorder and for Cello by DURANTE, FIORENZA, LEO, MANCINI and PERGOLESI

In addition to their prolific opera production, eighteenth-century neapolitan musicians composed concertos that melded the vocalità, of which they were recognized masters, with a particular interest in counterpoint. This meeting of styles endowed their works with uniquely rich textures and remarkably sensual harmonies.

Guided tour of the exhibition at 5 p.m. • Pompei Viva

poMpei viva – a roMan cityBeginning in 1763, a systematic reconstruction of the ancient city of Pompeii – situated not far from Naples – was undertaken. Pompeii had lain buried under lava following the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Within range of the volcano, the region of Naples had always been musically very active. We offer you an introduction to the music of the period, just at a time when the vestiges of Pompeii are reigniting interest.

The Arte Musica Foundation continues its complete concert presentation of the sacred cantatas of J. S. Bach, one of the world’s most universally admired composers.

In keeping with the liturgical cycle, each concert features at least one cantata for the Sunday it was originally composed.

This year, a new conference series will supplement the concerts: in order to better prepare our audience to fully experience these exquisite works, we offer talks where the cantatas on each concert programme are analyzed in detail. The talks will be given on Tuesdays preceding the concerts, from 5.30 to 7 p.m., at the Museum’s Maxwell Cummings Auditorium. • Free admission upon presentation of your concert ticket or $10.

Reminder: Rehearsals take place in the Museum Lounge, 45 minutes before each concert, and are designed to help you sing along with the final chorale of one of the cantatas with the rest of the audience.

We welcome you to pursue the adventure with us!

ANDREAS STAIER, harpsichord

On melancholy in Baroque music… Drawing on CLÉRAMBAULT, Louis COUPERIn, D’AnGLEBERT, FISHER and FROBERGER, Andreas Staier plumbs the depths of musical registers that both express profound sadness and propose a kind of acoustic argument about vanity, art and music. This internationally acclaimed harpsichordist is one of the most influential musicians in his field. He has brought the art of performing this repertoire to its peak.

An overview of the music of Franz Schubert (1797-1828) in nine concerts

“Love and pain have divided up my soul,” wrote Franz Schubert. Over the course of his short life, this independent-minded musician, supported by faithful friends, never tired of creating. His legacy is a body of works characterized by his highly personal style. Situated in time between Beethoven, whom he venerated, and the great Romantics, for whom he paved the way, this Viennese composer’s creative output is unique. The spirit of the lied – a form of which he is the undisputed master – also had a profound influence on his instrumental music. This series of nine concerts alternates lieder, works for piano and chamber music, enabling the audience to retrace Schubert’s journey, cut short but filled with masterpieces.

“Some melodies stay in your head. Schubert’s stay in your soul.”

– Camille Bellaigue

Luna Pearl WOOLF new work for 3 singers, 3 cellos and 3 double bassesJana Miller, sopranoHelen Wieser, sopranoKristin Hoff, mezzo-soprano

Following Maxime McKinley, Julien Bilodeau and nicole Lizée, it is Montreal composer Luna Pearl Woolf ’s turn to take part in the Arte Musica Foundation’s commissioning of new works by writing a piece inspired by a work of visual art in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ collection. For this commission, Luna Pearl Woolf chose At the Carnival, a monumental sculpture by the great American artist Jim Dine. The artist offered this work as a gift to the Museum.

On the programme for this extraordinary evening are three works that explore the dynamics of the number three by revelling in romantic tensions, dramatic twists and legendary battles. Mélange à trois is a wordless opera for violin, cello and percussion that tells the story of a love lost and found. In the String Trio (Pueraria lobata), three protagonists interact, mingling and overlapping like the kudzu vine that gives the piece its name. Finally, in her newest work, Woolf lends a voice to the three raw, battered wooden Venuses that make up Jim Dine’s sculpture. Woolf ’s music, for three female voices, three cellos and three double basses, investigates what these colossal women convey about the gifts of power, wisdom and seduction that inhabit us all.

Peter TOGNI Responsio

A contemporary response to Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame. Canadian composer Peter Togni simultaneously refracts, magnifies, challenges and refutes the austere voices of the Medieval masterpiece. Juxtaposing choral material, entirely written out, and the improvised interruptions of a bass clarinet, Togni assigns the role of time traveller to the clarinet, bringing Machaut’s fourteenth century into the heart of the twenty-first.
