Map of SRI in the World
Map of SRI in Vietnam(Source: IAE)
Background• SRI is known as a low carbon technique, an
ecological approach for paddy rice cultivation.
• SRI is a climate-smart approach for rice producers to adapt stresses of climate change
• SRI with 5 principles: grow young and single seedlings in square patterns’ low density; non-chemical and mechanical weed control; alternate wetting and drying for water management; and organic fertilizer preferred
Background• SRI is a simple and effective method that brings
multiple economic, ecological, and social benefits
• SRI around the World: Success in more than 55 countries (map)
• Worldwide SRI network: SRI-Rice (Cornell University);
• National SRI networks: Bangladesh; Cambodia; China; Indonesia (Ina-SRI); Japan (J-SRI); Malaysia (SRI-Mas); Nepal (SRI Nepal); Philippines (SRI-Pilipinas); India; Sri Lanka and Vietnam (SRIViet). West Africa is developing a regional network.
SRI in Vietnam
• Start research: Plant Protection Department of MARD (2003), Thai Nguyen University (2004)
• Research aspects have included: testing of all 5 principles of SRI; impact on methane emissions; mechanical weed control…
• SRI was recognized by MARD as ‘a technical advance’ for rice production (2007)
SRI in Vietnam
• Tens of thousands of farmers and extension workers have been trained on SRI
• SRI extended to cover about half a million ha with about 1.8 million farmers involved
• SRI extension: Farmer-to-farmer via SRI clubs, SRI key farmer network
• SRI is an important component of provincial level implementation of the New Rural Development Program, particularly in the Northern areas
SRI in Vietnam
• Involvement by Govt. (thru Plant Protection Dept.)
• Researchers and academics (Thai Nguyen Univ. [ICC-TNU], Hue, Hanoi Agricultural University); Field Crops Research Institute (FCRI), Centre for Agrarian System Research and Development (CASRAD), Institute of Agricultural Environment (IAE)
• INGOs and VNGOs (Oxfam, SNV, Veco, FIDR, SRD)
Vietnam SRI Network (SRIViet)
• Start: 2015 with multiple stakeholders
• Founders: Oxfam, SNV, ICC-TNU, FCRI, CASRAD, IAE, Veco, FIDR, PPDs, SRD
• SRIViet is linked with and will be an active member of SRIWorld
• SRIViet offers to lead regional exchanges, dialogues and collaboration of national SRI networks in the SEA region and ASEAN
Purpose of SRIViet
• A foundation for organizations and individuals interested in SRI and sustainable rice systems to come together and share information, research findings, cooperate to improve the voice of rice producers nationally, to engage in advocacy for policy, and to mobilize support
Objectives
• Gather organizations, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, extension workers, farmers, students and others who are interested on SRI, agricultural and rural development, and adaptation to climate change
• Work together in research and extension of SRI
• Participate in calling for funding support and policy advocacy
• Be a bridge for information-sharing and cooperation among SRIViet with SRIWorld network in SRI research and extension
Benefits of Establishment of SRIViet• Work together to resolve large-scale and multiple-aspect
problems/issues that a single actor cannot deal with
• Share information and tasks, avoid overlap of research and activities, and save resources
• Support each others’ efforts
• Promote exchange of ideas, experience, and skills
• Create opportunities for cooperation in SRI research and extension
• Collective efforts in policy advocacy and fund-raising
• Positive impact on people inside and outside network
Activities of SRIViet• Start-up meeting of SRIViet founders• Setting up regulations and support commitment• Form up SRIViet coordination• Development of website for SRIViet• Activity of linkage with SRIWorld • Publication of SRI research and extension• Setting up information-sharing mechanism• Activity on development of trademark for SRI products• Policy advocacy to support SRI
Activity of SRIViet
• Organizing a series of specific seminars/workshop on:– SRI connection with food security– SRI contribution to climate-change adaptations– SRI supporting new agriculture and rural
development– Approaches for SRI extension– SRI links with community health and gender equity– SRI ideas and methods applied for other crops…
