403rd Wing: Hurricane Hunters transition from tropical gales to artic blastsKEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. ‐‐More than 20 American deaths and millions of dollars' worth of damage have already been attributed to a "polar vortex" that has caused one of the fiercest winter storms in a decade, according to the Weather Channel.

So far, an additional nine significant storms have also churned their way across the North American continent this winter season causing even more damage with more expected to come.

Unlike the surprised and unfortunate travelers of the Donner party who died in a winter storm in 1847, these winter storms luckily do not sneak up on the U.S. government. 

Maintaining constant awareness of what storm systems are doing is a concerted effort between the National Weather Service and the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron also known as the Hurricane
