11
Maximum Eligibility PeriodMaximum eligibility period is 150% of the published length of educational program in which borrower is currently enrolled Each academic program has a maximum eligibility period that is based on the published length of the program
May be reported in years, months, or weeksTake published length of program in academic years and multiply by 1.5
COD will determine based on school-provided information
![Page 12: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Maximum Eligibility Period Examples
Program Length Maximum Eligibility Period
4-Year Bachelor’s Degree X 1.5 6.00 Years
2-Year Associate’s Degree X 1.5 3.00 Years
1-Year Certificate Program X 1.5 1.50 Years
18-Week Certificate Program
X 1.5 27 Weeks
10-Week Certificate Program
X 1.5 15 Weeks
![Page 13: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13
Converting Months or Weeks To Years If the published length of the program is measured in months or weeks, ED will convert the school reported months or weeks to years (or portions of years) –
Number of days in the months or weeks Number of days in the Title IV academic year
Month = 30 days Week = 7 days
![Page 14: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
14
Converting Months or Weeks To YearsMonths Example –
Credit hour school defines its Title IV Academic Year as 30 weeks: 210 days
Program A’s published length is 7 months: 210 days210 days divided by 210 days = 1.00 years
Program B’s published length is 15 months: 450 days450 days divided by 210 days = 2.14 years
Program C’s published length is 12 months: 360 days360 days divided by 210 days = 1.71 years
![Page 15: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Subsidized Usage Period

![Page 17: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
18
Calculating Subsidized Usage PeriodNumber of days in the loan’s loan period divided by number of days in the loan’s academic YearLoan period – Beginning and ending dates of period covered by loan
Academic year – Beginning and ending dates of the academic year used for annual loan limit progression Either a Scheduled Academic Year (SAY) or a
Borrower Based Academic Year (BBAY) Likely not the same as the Title IV academic year
because of breaks and summers
![Page 18: 150% Limit on Direct Loan Interest Subsidy November 13, 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070423/5681660b550346895dd9461d/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
19

Help Students Navigate the 150% Loan Limit Rule – Great Lakes1. Students may receive Direct Subsidized loans for no more than
150% of the length of the current academic program.2. Once a student reaches the 150% mark in a particular program,
their future subsidized loan eligibility in that program will end. They may, however, be eligible for unsubsidized loans.
3. A student who reaches the 150% limitation will have their interest subsidy end for all outstanding subsidized loans if the student does not graduate and continues to be enrolled in the same or a shorter undergraduate program.
4. This provision is not affected by the total dollar amount borrowed. Any and all periods of subsidized loan borrowing will count against the 150% time limit.
5. This policy is in addition to, and not in place of, the lifetime aggregate loan limits that are currently in place.
