A Toad’s LamentHeard recently on the Nocturnal Croaking Network (NCN): My name is Tertius Toad the Eighth, I have lived (as my forbears have for centuries) at my address in Hempstead opposite Rookery Pit on the corner of Bertie Harmer’s field. I am now in my third season as a mature adult and it is my habit once a year to make a pilgrimage to celebrate the rites of spring by crossing The Street to Rookery Pit, a Mecca for all Hempstead toads. There to meet once a year friends and family for the Toadfest, where we take the waters followed by much carousing, cavorting and spawning over a seven-day period to ensure the lineage of the family. This year was particularly successful personally, with five thousand eggs successfully fertilised. However, upon returning home feeling happy but depleted and crossing the The Street one dark damp evening I was blinded by a flashlight; rudely lifted up; put in a bucket with thirty other friends; and deposited back in the pond where I stayed rather dazed until the following evening, when I again tried to get home with the same (I regret to inform you) result. On the eighth time of trying, again came the flashlight and I heard a voice saying “Here’s another one I think is going to the pond.” It did occur to me later that my highway code training of always facing the on-coming traffic might be the reason for my predicament. It’s a pity that instinct doesn’t allow me to go elsewhere for the Toadfest.A further broadcast by the NCN: We, the rest of Rookery Pit toad population, object to the moans and groans of that old curmudgeon Tertius Toad. We are very grateful for the kind and courteous help offered by the generous people of Hempstead saving many of our friends and family from certain death.

Children’s Drawing CompetitionTo complement the Baconsthorpe exhibition there will be a competition for children to draw a picture of the

Queen. Entries will be divided into three age brackets: under 5, 5-8 and 9-12. All entries will be on view in the church during the exhibition, the winner of each age group will be awarded a prize and the winning entries will be sent to the Queen after the event. Please send entries with name and address on the back by 14th May to PCC Secretary, Ash Tree Farm, Baconsthorpe NR25 6LF.

ThanksThank you to all our contributors both regular and occasional. Please keep articles coming in so that the Newsletter can maintain its colourful mix.

ErratumBertie Harmer has pointed out the error in the April issue. The correct name for the watery area referred to is Rookery Pit.

Commission OfferedA commission is on offer to a local artist to prepare and paint Broadland Scenes onto a cross-cut saw (pictures and photographs supplied) for up to the sum of £500. For more information 711657.

My dear friendsForty Days

I don’t know who said it first but ‘Life begins at forty’, besides being often said on one’s fortieth birthday, is true of what happened after that first Easter Day. Jesus appeared to his friends on several occasions: to the disciples on the Emmaus Road; to his frightened followers in the upper room; and on the shore where He ate bread and fish with them. After the Resurrection Jesus said to his disciples ‘Peace be with you’. He also charged Peter to ‘Feed my sheep, feed my lambs’.Still He says to us in the stillness of our hearts ‘Peace be with you’. Still the Church has a pastoral duty to feed His sheep and tend His lambs. He gives His peace to all who trust in Him and each one is called to serve Him day by day in our communities. At the very heart of it all is love of God and our neighbours and, when the going gets tough we have Christ’s promise ‘I am with you always until the end of time’.

God bless you all.

Living dangerouslyIt is the time of year when everything wild seems to lose all common sense in favour of chasing something edible, producing more children, and trying to kill their predators. Unfortunately, nature is such that many of these actions are not always successful.I recently observed many frantic small birds and game birds trying to pluck hair from my large hairy hound, clearly for nesting material. After much patience, he decided he was having Partridge for dinner, and the Partridge lost a few tail feathers before its escape. Blue Tits and Great Tits are so desperate for this nesting material that I have to throw them some dog hair in a separate area of the garden. However, on days that I leave the door open, they come in and collect it from the mats and dog bed. I then have to negotiate access. They still fly into the closed window at times, so I have to put stickers all over the windows, so that they can see that there is glass there and a window is a solid object.I think every gardener wishes they could find the ultimate answer to the expansion of the mole population (not so bad this year because it has been dry). Moles multiply by four every time they breed. People like me who use organic material on the garden encourage worms, which

encourages moles of course. When I find the answer to that one I will make my first million. I’ve tried the windmills, the bottles (for sound and vibration) the smelly stuff down the mole runs etc. The best I have done is to buy a huge pack of moth balls, which last a fair time. If anyone has the answer – tell me first and then I will sign us up with Alan Sugar. My horrible hound disgraced himself recently. A baby squirrel had fallen from its dray and was stunned in the road. I know people consider grey squirrels as vermin, but for the kind dog-walker who took my hound out, it was very distressing to see him eat it (it didn’t suffer). There is something about baby animals, isn’t there? I’m sure that they are designed to look pretty so that nothing wants to harm them. However, one squirrel on my property clearly had a spatial awareness problem, and every time it launched itself from a tree or hedge toward the bird table, it missed embarrassingly. I don’t know if it is practising for the Squirrel Olympics, but I won’t be signing up as its agent!Look to the skies at this time of year. There will be passing raptors. Look at the bird feeders. Is that really a Chaffinch? But when you look up or down, don’t live dangerously! J

Baconsthorpe News

Diocesan Lent Project The Bishop of Lynn took up cycling this Lent in an attempt to visit most of the benefices in his area and to raise support for this year’s Diocesan Lent Project. On March 23rd Bishop Jonathan included Baconsthorpe Church in his itinerary as representative of our Benefice, and members from all our churches met him for coffee in the church. Our Rural Dean, Jeremy Sykes, joined him at the same time and continued with him as he progressed round our Deanery. The Bishop spent nine days on the road, beginning on Ash Wednesday and said before starting ‘By cycling through nine deaneries over nine days, I’m hoping to pass through nearly all

69 benefices in my area, and to meet as many people as possible along the way’.He left his mitre at home, but his Bishop’s Crook was attached to his bicycle! The Diocesan Lent Project focussed on our Diocesan link with Papua New Guinea.

Hempstead Floods in 1912The Titanic disaster of 100 years ago seems to be taking up much of the time in the media nowadays, but how many residents in our area know of another tragedy in that same year that was much nearer to home? Mention floods and most people assume the sea is responsible – but not in 1912. In August that year at the height of what should have been summer the heavens opened and seven inches of rain fell in just over 24 hours. This is the equivalent of two months of rain in just one day. Would our friendly reporter’s rain gauge in Hempstead have coped with that amount? (See his answer on the next page – Ed.) With a hose pipe ban now in place anything can happen!

Barningham News

Annual Easter Egg Hunt A huge thank you to all those who came and supported the 6th Easter Egg Hunt held at Barningham Hall in aid of Stepping Stones Pre-school, Aldborough. Over 10,000 mini chocolate eggs were hidden and despite the cold and changeable weather over 900 people attended. They came to hunt eggs in the garden, listen to stories, play with puppets, make Easter crafts, enjoy traditional fête games and eat good home-made food. The event raised over £5,000 which includes a generous donation of £750 from Barclays Bank. Thank you also to those who volunteered at the event and to the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, Alby, The Puppet School, West Runton and the Easter Bunny for braving the weather and performing. It was a day of fun!

The writer’s father then a boy of eight years old recalled this flood very well due to the devastation it caused. Rivers broke their banks, properties and people were swept away and the harvest ruined. The low lying areas such as The Broads were worst hit as was Norwich where fatalities occurred. Nearer home the Bure navigation which carried freight by barge up to Aylsham was destroyed forever when all the locks were ruined. And even nearer to home the Glaven must have become a raging torrent as the road at Hempstead Mill was washed away. The author Henry Williamson in ‘Story of a Norfolk Farm’, gives a graphic account on the floods. He was cycling up to Norfolk at the time! Arthur Pentney

Weather Reporter answers: Yes, my rain guage could cope with over 6" of rain, but it is questionable if the local drainage system could. I have an article on the Norfolk Bridges which were affected. “Norfolk Bridges II” by D Manning in the annual Journal of the Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society for 1996 included a sketch of the rainfall pattern for Aug 25–26 1912. The heaviest was 8.1" to the east of Norwich, and 7" around Holt. On Monday Aug 26 rain started at 4 am, and continued until 10 pm with winds gusting to 50 mph. The run-off accumulated in the Bure and

Wensum and took out numerous bridges on the way.My feeling is that the situation in 1912 included a group of coincidences which are unlikely to be repeated, but the climatological trend is towards more lively summer weather, amongst other things. So the best advice is to prepare for the worst, and don’t be surprised if nothing interesting happens. David Durst

Mill Flood in the 1950s (?)

And, talking about floods... here is a picture of the road outside Hempstead Mill during the flood of 19 something or other taken by John Hagan (died 1998) and contributed by Diana Spalton. Can anybody provide the date of these floods? Please contact the editor if you know.

Hempstead Film Club The Lady Eve (1941) turned out to be one of the best of the season judging by the approval rating of members. Why is it that American film comedies of this genre all seem to have feisty wise-cracking female leads in contrast to rather wet naive male leads? In this case Jean Harrington alias Lady Eve (Barbara Stanwyck) and card-sharp dad (Charles Coburn) plan sweet revenge on Charles Pike (a very young Henry Fonda), a millionaire simpleton and snake fancier at his parent’s mansion. Leading to many pratfalls for the unfortunate Charles in a scintillating romantic farce. Great entertainment for all.A four star rating; more like it please Adrian next season!

Hempstead Fête Having decided that it is highly unlikely that the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics would be postponed due to the clash of dates, please note the change of date of the fête to Sunday, 19 Aug 2012. Apologies to our loyal and regular attendees and hope that this change does not upset the plans of too many.
