SUMMER CARNIVAL Next Friday 23 March 2018, our Tennis, League Tag, Cricket and T-Ball teams will be competing against other schools in the Ellenbrook District at the annual Summer Interschool Carnival. Tennis and League Tag will be played at Coolamon Oval and Cricket and T-Ball at Ellenbrook District Open Space. We are looking forward to a great day filled with sports-manship and hopefully a few wins under our belts. If you are free on the day we would love to have you come support our students. Canteen orders and permission slips are due by the 21st of March. Please ensure your child is equipped with a water bottle and lunch if not ordering from the canteen. Best of luck to all students involved. Mr Hall P.E Teacher

SPELLATHON We’ve made a fantastic start to our Spell-a-thon. Thank you for helping your children to cre-ate their ‘MyProfile’ page. Many students have already received generous online donations. It is great to see relatives from as far away as the UK and New Zealand getting involved and supporting our children in their spelling and fundraising efforts. Students are still able to cre-ate a ‘MyProfile’ page (https://myprofilepage.com.au/) and seek online donations. Simply

follow the steps in the sponsorship booklet. Of course, if you don’t want to do online sponsorship, you can collect old-fashioned cash money! This can be bought into school any time from now. Students just fill out their sponsorship form at the back of the booklet and put it in an envelope with the money they have raised. This can then be handed into the Office. Of course, the spell-a-thon is much more than just raising money. It is about learning wonderful new words! Please encourage your child to learn and practise their list words, so they can do well in their classroom Spelling Bee. Discussing the meaning of their words is also very important, and is a great way to increase your child’s vocabulary. Remember, the top two spellers from each classroom will get the chance to compete in our Junior and Senior Spelling Bee Championships. A reminder of the important dates:

Monday 26th March – Thursday 29th March (Week 9) - Spelling Bee heats to be held in classrooms Thursday 29th March (Week 9) - Sponsorship money due back to school Friday 6th April – 9am (Week 10) - Junior Spelling Bee Final (Years 1 – 2) Friday 13th April – 9am (Week 11) - Senior Spelling Bee Final (Years 3 – 6)

NETBALL UPDATE Our first PP-Year 1 training on Wednesday saw 16 children attend, including 3 boys. There were a couple missing so all in all there should be around 20 children. The feedback from the parents was awesome, and the kids enjoyed every moment. Based on what I saw we already have a couple of superstars in the making. The year 2– year 4 training seems to be a hit as well. We have 16 attendees making it great for scratch matches during training. After this season, these girls (and 1 boy) will be awesome. This year, only one team will attend the competition in Midvale but I’m expect-ing 2 or maybe 3 teams next year. I’m hoping not to loose a game this season but our team will consist of mostly Y2s, playing in the Y3-Y4 competition which will be testing, but great. We start compe-tition play on the 28th April in case anyone would like to see the game. We also lost a couple of players from last year ,so just to say thank you for their fundraising efforts, we are holding a team BBQ at An-nie’s Landing Park this Sunday Afternoon from 1pm. I’ll keep you updated of our progress during the season. Regards Will & Lani Patu

SOLVE A GRAPH PUZZLE - Suitable for Year 5 or above. What You Need:

Graph paper Pencil Ruler

Coordinate planes? Four quadrants? Ordered pairs? These are terms that make students in the middle grades uneasy. However, with practice, graphing on the coordinate plane can be an enjoyable activity. By fifth grade, students understand positive and negative numbers so gra-phing on the four quadrants is a way to apply this knowledge to solve a problem. Using ordered pairs to create geometric figures is like solving a puzzle! By practicing graphing skills, students are increasing their visual thinking and problem solving skills. Here's a fun, geometric puzzle activity that will capture your child's interest and strength-en his number awareness. What You Do: (2,2), (2,4), (3,5), (4,4), (4,2) 1. Using graph paper, help your child draw a four quadrant plane. Label the x-axis (the horizontal line) and the y-

axis (the vertical line). Label the intersecting of both lines 0. Label each point to the right on the x-axis 1 to 7. La-bel each point to the left on the x-axis -1 to -7. On the y-axis label the points up with positive numbers, 1-7, and then label the points down with negative numbers, -1 to -7. If using the printable Coordinate Plane worksheet, print out and review the x-axis and y-axis

2. Give your child these ordered pairs and ask him to plot them on the coordinate plane: (0, -2), (1,-3), (2,-2), (2,-4), (1,-5), (-1,-5), (-2,-4), (-2,-2), (-1,-3)

3. Remind your child to plot the first number of the ordered pair on the x-axis and the second number of the ordered pair on the y-axis. 4. Next, have your child take a ruler and connect the 5 points. Ask him what geometric shape he created. 5. Give your child another set of ordered pairs to graph: (-2,3), (-3,5), (-4,6), (-5,5), (-6,3), (-4,4), (-2,5), (-6,5) 6. Have him connect the 9 points and describe the shape he has created.
