CANADA'S ONLY MUSIC WEEKLY Volume 6, No. 25 MONIQUE lEYRAC Al MASSEY Mill Toronto: Voted Canada's "Woman Of The Year, In Music", Monique Leyrac will make her first Toronto appearance at Massey Hall, Saturday, February 25th., and will carry the two hour show by herself with suitable backing. Miss Leyrac has been dubbed "A Canadian Piaf" and has also shown fantastic talent with show tunes, ala Streisand. Her performance of "Mon Pays" ("My Country") is done with such emotion it usually results in her audiences giving her a standing ovation. On tap for Miss Leyrac is her April 18th. performance at the Cana- dian Centennial Ball, to be held in London, England's Grosvenor House Hotel. Other performers included in the star studded affair are: Shirley Harmer, Bernard Braden and Capitol recording Miss Ley rue is a native of Montreal and although capable of sing- ing in both English and French, her e repertoire was somewhat restricted to songs of Quebec, which she usually performed before predominantly English audiences. She was literally, an un- known before her appearance at New York's Town Hall last spring, but in show -biz jargon "Left them, wanting more", and that's what they'll have when she returns to New York in April, this time to Carnegie Hall. Her appear- ance will be preceded by several guest- ings on the internationally famous "Johnny Carson Show". Truly an international artist, Miss Leyrac now makes her home in Paris, France, where she has received rave reviews for her appearance at the most famous of European Music Halls, The Olympia. Other international cre- dits include the taking of two firsts, when .she represented Canada at the International Song Festival in Sopot, Poland (1964) and the grand prize at the Song Festival in Ostend, Belgium. It was only after these accomplish- ments that Montreal decided to recog- nize this great local talent. Miss Leyrac's material for her first record came about from the com- bined efforts of well known French Week Ending February 18th. 1961 15 CENTS STONE SCORES WITH SPENCER NIS GROUP One of Canada's most pro- gressive young independent record labels, Stone Records, is presently leading the way, in Canada, with a UK hit "Gimme Some Lovin" by The Spencer Davis Group. The disc, now topping the charts in Toronto and p among the top tenners on many of the national charts, can almost be classi- fied as one of those hits out of left field. Although it was a top chart item in England, many of the Canadian Canadians, Gilles Vigneault and Claude Leveill e. The record, on Co- lumbia, "Pleins Feux Sur Monique Leyrac" was an immediate success throughout her native province as well as gaining attention in the internation- al market. In 1964 she was performing hostess on the French network TV series "Pleins Feux", which was one of the major hits of the television season. Also in 1964, she gave a fan- tastically successful concert at Mon- treal's Place des Arts and made an equally successful 15 city tour of Quebec. This was also the year for her second Columbia album "Monique Leyrac En Concert". Soviet cultural officials became aware of this prize winning Canadian charmer and asked her to make a two week concert tour of Russia which she undertook in the early fall of last year. Like all Monique Leyrac's appearances, this too was highly successful. Canadians from coast to coast had their first glimpse of Canada's "Woman Of The Year, In Music" when Monique Leyrac appeared on the CBC- TV network "Special" of Wayne and Shuster on January 9th. of this year. While in Toronto for her con- cert, Miss Leyrac has been scheduled for an appearance on the Elwood Glover "Luncheon Date" as well as Ross McLean's "TBA". For the Ontario French Canadian listeners she will be subject of an interview on the pow- erful CJBC radio outlet. Bob Stone, President of the hot label, has just assembled the nec- essary parts for the Groups first album which should be on the market the last week in February. It is also hoped FIVE HOUR "SOUL SHOW" FOR PNE GARDENS Vancouver: January 27 turned out to be one of the biggest shows to ever hit the Pacific National Exhibition Gardens. The big attraction, all Cana- dian, was the gathering of the top soul acts in this west coast city. The Group comes from Birm- ingham, England, and came about when Spencer Davis was asked to play regu- larly at one of the downtown "soul" clubs, and he found that alone he could only muster up four numbers and the night was long and four numbers would wear pretty thin. That's why he brought in the services of Muff Winwood, a gas of a bass player and his brother Stevie, who has a whole trunk of talent. He plays piano, guitar and drums. Next to join was Peter York, one of the best trumpet players in the Midlands. Put them all together and you have a travelling road show, and that's what they did. They travelled all over the Birmingham area and although they weren't making much bread, they did work themselves into one of the tight- est little groups in the business. Then they turned professional and tied in with Chris Blackwell, producer/mana- ger, of Millie Small "My Girl Lolli- pop" fame. Their first disc, "Gimme Some Lovin" created a noise in En land, our story. Manager Blackwell is due in the States the latter part of February, and it is expected that a tour of the United States and Canada will be ar- ranged. Negotiations will probably be completed for the Groups appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, expected to be sometime in March. Harold Winslow of Quality Records reports sales of over 80,000 on their Young Canada Singers single "Canada". Bobby Gimby, who wrote the music and words and also performs on the disc, has just completed a nation-wide promo trip that did much to create an interest in the record. A re -mix of the single has also added interest, from a trade angle. Many schools have shown an interest in adopting "Canada" as their official school song and because of this interest, mans' radio stations are purchasing the records from Quality and distributing them to the schools in their area. It is also interesting to note that because of the bi-bi presentation of this record, school children in pre- dominantly English provinces are learning the French lyrics while those in French speaking areas are picking up the English words.

LET'S GET HUNG UP ONTHE VANCOUVER SCENE. This pastweek I've received several phone callsfrom Vancouver refugees, and they tellme that the very Americanized westcoast city is something else, and theytab it SNOBSVILLE. The big beef ofthese visitors to the Pacific city isthat Vancouver radio is a poor imita-tion of the American sound and they'veeven gone so far as to hire Americantalent so as to make the brainwashingcomplete (Elvira tells me Toronto hadthe same situation but the importedbrain got cold feet the first day, andit wasn't because of the weather). Any-way, I like Vancouver, and when ithappens that I'm able to re -locate inCanada, it'll be Vancouver. After all,you don't have to listen to the radioto know what's on wax. Vancouver re-cord stores stock a lot more than whatthe San Francisco prophet ,dubs hit.

Here's a little more news onVancouver radio. The Spencer DavisGroup are a big item in Vancouver.Their Stone disc "Gimme Some Lovin"topped the charts for over three weeks.Somehow, one of the top forty stationsgot hold of the next release by theGroup. They had it sent to them fromEngland and bang they went on it likethere were thousands of copies in thestores. Hang on to your nickels gangit won't be available until after Feb.20.

Now if you haven't heard ofPat LaCroix as being Canada's topshow -biz photographer, then you mightremember him as Pat LaCroix of theColonials. Doesn't strike a bell? Well, how about Pat LaCroix of The HalifaxThree? There you are. Now you gotthe picture. Well here's another inter-esting bit. You've heard of DennyDoherty? Well, I won't go through allthat Colonial and Halifax Three bit, because you'll probably recognizeDenny as one of the Mamas and Papas. Now here's the meat of the story. Patand his wife have been invited by hisold singing buddy, Denny, to spend acouple of weeks at Denny's palatialCalifornia beach home. You know what?Pat didn't turn it down. So get your-self prepared for a beautiful picturecoverage of one of the members of one

NIGHTOWL

What's happening at the NightOwl? We can report a very suc-cessful reaction to the ALL NEW"rock show of the yeomen". Eachnight they appear, the crowdsgrow bigger and bigger. As well, the EVIL are drawing new fansfrom all over Ontario, and thenewly formed MANX have themrolling in the aisles. Be sure tosee this group. They call them-selves "The World's Worst Group"but you have to see their greattalent to understand why. Thenew show built around the.MANX will give you many alaugh.

In the months to come, the Night Owl will be featuring"spotlight guest appearances"of Canada's top groups. We willbe welcoming groups from allacross Canada, and some of thenames we will be coming up withwill surprise you. We are veryhappy to know that the fame ofthe Night Owl has spread all overNorth America. Today groupswant to play the Night Owl, andthat is where you'll see the TOPtalent.

If you visit Toronto'sVillage, just walk that extrablock north to the Night Owl.Join Canada's music men at theNight Owl. Discover Canada'stalent.

of the most popular groups in the world. Here'a a footnote. When Pat and Dennywere trying to set the world on fire asmembers of the Halifax Three, ZalYanovsky accompanied them on a fewoccasions and I don't have to tell youabout this famous Canadian. Well, wemight not be making it as Canadian re-cording stars but many American groupsare making it because of Canadian re-cording stars. Figure that one out, andwhile you're at it take a look at thenext big group that's going to make aninternational noise. They're calledThe Buffalo Springfield. Next weekI'll give you the names of the Cana-dians in this group.

Alrighty, I warned you lastweek, so here they are. The Tomb-stones from Owen Sound, Ontario.Formerly The Dictions, with a strictly

commercial sound, the gang went forthe wierd look and name and grabbedon to the modern jazz oriented soundof the big names like Pickett andBrown. Now they're the talk of On-tarios' mid -north (Owen Sound-Midland-Bracebridge). The group is made up ofJim Wayner, but he likes to be calledby his full name, James Jacob Cross -well Courtney Wilson Wayner. NowJJCCWW does a lot of singing anddancing and gets much of his toe -tapping help from organist DaveFearnall, who makes with the arrang-ing. Dennis Scott keeps the boys wellpaced with the percussion section(that's drums) and George Dahmertakes the bass duties. Lead guitaristis Dan Rouse. Ted Graper has a lot ofduties. Besides looking after bothtenor and alto saxes, he has time fortrumpet and when his hands are freehe fills in on any rhythm instrumentthat happens to be available.

That guy in the bear pit of theCBC-TV "Sunday" show has a prettyside to him too, you know. Her nameis Sylvia. They got the same last namecuz they got married a couple of yearsago. Well, they have another recordout and this time they're on the MGMlabel, and it looks like it could beanother "Four Strong Winds" (thatmeans "hit"). It's called "Lovin'Sound" and "Pilgrimage To Paradise".They're also great songwriters too. Before I knew about their own recordrelease I received a disc from Cali-

fornia on the UNI label. It was one ofthose American promotional copies, you know, the same song on both sides,so you don't play the wrong side. Any-way, the title is "The French Girl"and the group doing the bit are calledThe Daily Flash. You know who wroteit? The guy in the bear pit and hispretty wife, that's who. Now that's aswitch. Of course, Gordon Lightfoot isproving this all the time. The Ameri-cans are sure eating up his material.I hope that rumour that he's going todo all his recording in Nashville, isn'tcompletely true. If anyone can makeToronto an important part of the re-cording world, it's Gordon Lightfootand that guy in the bear pit and hispretty wife.

If you look back at all mycolumns since I started, you'll prob-ably notice that I can't seem to go aweek without mentioning the FamousNight Owl Coffee House in Toronto'sinternationally known Village, whichis hosted by that suave, manager'smanager, Harry Finegold (don't believethat old show -biz wives ditty about"behind the success of every success-ful Coffee House, there's a woman",cuz it's true. Don't want to mentionany names, but her initials are DoloresHawkins). Anyway, back to the NightOwl. The reason I like going there isbecause I meet many of the big nameswho are visiting Toronto and I alsoget to know a lot of the Toronto groups.Seems most of them end up at the NightOwl every evening. Another good reas-on is the entertainment. If they're abig name in Canada, eventually you'llcatch them on stage at the Night Owl.There's one group who frequently playthere, called The Evil, who are former-ly from St. Catherines. HAVE THEY

BUILT UP A FOLLOWING???? As amatter of fact, HAVE THEY BUILTUP A FOLLOWING! Not only in theVillage, but wherever they appear andthey _ get the "come back anytime"treatment as well. There's a club upin Stratford (can't mention the name, seems the owner doesn't want any pub-licity) but when The Evil play thisclub someone let's the secret out andthousands of their fans from all overthe country find this secret club andpack it to the rafters, just to catch TheEvil in action. These guys are so dedi-cated and work themselves into sucha frenzy that a couple of them havebeen under doctors care lately. Leadsinger Jim Bryson strained the musclesaround his rib cage (sounds disgust-ing) and Denny Tour bin, the drummer, not wanting to be upstaged, came downwith a case of lumpy food. So the restof the guys are just taking it easy.Johnny Libera, the rhythm guitar man,is tinkering with his jeep and TerryWalsh got the part in his hair straight(down the middle). The calmnest ofthe crew is Dippy, who got Donovanto release an Epistle about him.

3'S A CROWD

by Francine Drubick3's A Crowd had the honour and

distinction of being voted "The TopFolk Group" in Canada in the AnnualRPM Awards. When I heard they werein town, I ran over to the Penny Farth-ing to catch their act, and boy whatan act. 3's A Crowd have been togeth-er for 2 years and consists of talented

MI miner, IrxermorTitcomb. Donna used to be a part ofthe Capella Trio, and played a greatdeal in and around the Edmonton area. She has received much dramatic train-ing which is evident in her performance.

3's A Crowd were originallyknown as The Bill Swartz Quartet andhad to continually apologize for Bill'sabsence. (There never really was aBill.)

They first met in Vancouverand landed the "Sing Out Show" alocally produced favourite and they'vehappened ever since.

Their first record for Epic,"Bound To Fly", was arranged byCanada's top arranger, Ben McPeek, and was an immediate success fromcoast to coast, in Canada. Hot on theheels of this giant will be "HoneyMachine" which was just cut in NewYork and should be released in bothCanada and the United States in avery few weeks. Just prior to this re-lease they will be playing Ontario clubcircuits and will then move into theUnited States for several appearances.

I was very impressed at theirstyle of performance and as far as theirsound goes, you just can't classifytheir abilities. They sing jug bandmusic, rhythm and blues, bluegrass, blues, ballads and folk.

3's A Crowd just don't sing ,

they swing and put on one of the mostentertaining shows I've seen.

DR. WILLAN-ROBERT CHOQUETTECO -WRITE CENTENNIAL ANTHEMOttawa: At 7 PM December 31, 1%6,on Ottawa's Parliament Hill, a choir, made up of more than 200 voices, sangCanada's new Centennial Anthem, forthe first time. The choir was accom-panied by the Peace Tower carillon, played by Robert Donnell. The presen-

Canada's most noted composer, Dr. HealeyWillan, seated, and Robert Choquette, Consul -General for Canada in Bordeaux, France.

tation of the anthem took place duringthe flame -lighting ceremonies of theFires of Friendship, the beginning ofthe year of celebration for Canada's100th birthday.

The story of the anthem beganlast year when the Canadian InterfaithConference asked Dr. Healey Willan,Canada's most noted composer, to col-laborate with Canada's Consul -General,in Bordeaux,France, Robert Choquette,to write the words and music for a newhymn, in French and English, to com-memorate Canada's coming Centennialyear. The anthem was originally to besung in churches, but the magnitude ofthe work by Mr. Choquette and Dr.Willan made it more suitable for pre-sentation by professional choirs. Anew Centennial Hymn for churches isbeing written by Rev. Kenneth Moyer,of Niagara Falls and Rex Le Lacheur,of Ottawa.

The Willan-Choquette anthemwill be heard across the country at of-ficial functions, sung by large choirsand it is expected that the words willsoon be as well known to Canadiansas are its authors.

SCOOP!!! EXCLUSIVE TOELVIRA CAPREESE! This is theonly columnist in the nation to havethis story!!! There is a rumour that acertain columnist with a certain Cana-dian music weekly, may have her col-umn DISCONTINUED. The reason justmight be that she is stepping on toomany toes. The rumour comes from ausually reliable source. This column-ist (lady, that she is) will exit herpost with dignity and graciousness.

She will probably just be YANKEDwith no notice. I predict that the mailwill flow into the music weekly officeat a great rate. I also predict that herdismissal will be ahiled by some as apublicity stunt. IT ISN'T!!! The powersthat be will not deny this rumour! (Ed:No comment.) I also suggest that ifyou wish her reinstated....you wouldbetter spend your postage by writingto your friendly neighbourhood recordcompany (Ed: Or your Member ofParliament). No doubt Old Ed: willmake jest of this item. (Ed: I "Jest"may!!!)

A TORONTO SOUND GROUPneeded their oil changed recently...sothey took their station wagon back tothe leasing company. Now they'reWALKIN'. Apparently they couldn'tagree on payment or the lack of. Theyjust weren't number one with theirleasing company.

THE PAUPERS APPEARANCEon CBC-TV was a smash. The younghost just couldn't get an answer fromthe group when he asked about payola. How come no one wants to talk aboutpayola. I'm willing to discuss thewhole thing openly, but the FCC justisn't interested. Something about, foreign country. Who else would youapproach????

THE TORONTO SOUNDThose words inspire the swelling ofchests in good old Toronto (the silent). After the swelled chests a fasttrip south for a record session, andback to Toronto with the "TorontoSound" and sneaking back across theborder (through customs) at the cost ofthe duty on a spool of tape. Torontohas got the "sound" and even if itcomes from New York, Detroit, LosAngeles, or London (and it has to beEngland) it's still the Toronto sound.

AFTER POISING MYSELF atthe radio to hear the Tripp on localradio, I lit a cigarette and opened abox of chocalates and a can ofcider. The show was mysteriouslycancelled at the last minute. The pro-mos were still being aired, but myTripp adventure came to a sudden end.I guess the group just packed uptheir instruments and went home. Itwas disappointing
