14th March 2019 Persistence Confidence Getting Along Organisation Resilience 2019 Annual Implementation Plan Each year, all Victorian schools develop an Annual Implementation Plan by setting goals, targets and actions for school improvement throughout the year. The goals for the Annual Implementation Plan (also known as the AIP) at Bonbeach Primary School are developed collaboratively through the School Improvement Team which consists of school leadership and our curriculum leaders. The aim of the AIP is to guide the school in working towards achieving our four year goals as set in our School Strategic Plan. We are now in the second year of our Strategic Plan which runs from 2018- 2021. During 2021 the school will go through a review which is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past four years and set future directions. 2019 AIP goals Key Improvement Strategy 1: To build a school culture of review, responsibility and shared accountability for school improvement. School Actions: Provide opportunities for coaching, modelling and mentoring by key learning area leaders to assist school staff to implement school priorities and programs. Parents and Friends Help!! The Parents and Friends Committee need 2 volunteers to take on the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson roles. After many years of hard work, the current office bearers have stood down to allow some new members take over. The current committee will stay on to assist the new office bearers they wont be arduous positions or working on their own. Without these office bearers, P & F cannot be an official subcommittee of the School Council and may not be able to organise all the wonderful activities we all enjoy so much through the year. Communication with your child’s teacher Communication with your child’s classroom teacher is really important. Teachers will communicate with you in person, via Compass newsfeeds, emails and written notes. Teachers are not always available to speak with you before and after school and are not available during their class time to speak to a parent, so we recommend email as a very effective method of interaction for most situations, or even to request a time to get together. Staff will respond to emails between during work hours as soon as they are able. Teachers cannot necessarily see their emails when they are working with students throughout the day in class. If a matter is urgent a phone call to the office from a parent is the best approach or a hard copy note. Any urgent changes to pick up that must be passed onto your child and teacher will always be passed on from the office.

Farmers’ Market Thank you to all our volunteers who came along to the Farmers Market last weekend to support our school. A particular thank you to our grade 3/4 teachers and families for your support. To thank you for your support, $500 from the takings on the day will go toward the grade 3/4 area. Our Grade 3/4 teachers plan to use these funds to subsidise an incursion in Term 2. We had 35 stalls and 858 people through the gate this month. Thank you to the following volunteers on the day: Justin B, Michelle S, Lee S, Ange L, Julian S, Brooke B, Anita M, Anita P, Mandy K, Regan M, Veronika E, Laureen L, Andreea S, Cameron S, Narelle L, Mr Halperin, Mrs Ivy, Miss Felmingham Volunteers for the 14

th April market will be coordinated by the Grade 1/2 team. If you are available

to help out on this market, please click on the link below and complete the Google form or see one of the Grade 1/2 teachers. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdF8WyrHQ2HOjlwAcUkEySYLlkUA0o_Ccm-DGKN5w6yoxEzjQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Balancing extra-curricular activities for flourishing kids

Busyness seems to have become a way of life for modern families. It’s unlikely you’ll ever hear a parent talk of having plenty of free time on their hands. Unfortunately, that’s a statement unlikely to be heard from a lot of modern-day kids either.

The afternoons on family calendars are increasingly filling up with organised after-school activities, and in families with multiple children the logistics of keeping up with all this can be complicated. The strain of ferrying children back and forth, often in different directions, saps families of energy, resources and time.

We have great intentions

Recent research from the United Kingdom found that the desire for children to succeed is a strong driver for many parents, sometimes causing them to load their children up with extra-curricular activities. While the intentions are good, the method of keeping kids busy is probably questionable.

Other reasons for encouraging extra-curricular activities include: giving kids the best start in life, making friends, keeping fit and healthy, developing interests and preventing boredom. Anecdotal evidence suggests the findings are similar in Australia.

Page 3: 14th March 2019 - Bonbeach€¦ · 14th March 2019 Persistence Confidence Getting Along Organisation Resilience 2019 Annual Implementation Plan Each year, all Victorian schools develop

The cost of busyness

We live at a time where rates of mental illness, particularly anxiety, are climbing. One in seven Australian children have a diagnosed mental illness. That’s three in an average classroom. Many more go undiagnosed.

Rushing to activities, late nights and stressed parents aren’t the conditions for family members to enjoy flourishing mental health. Too many organised activities detract from time to hang out with friends, to comfortably complete homework tasks, to spend time with family, to get bored and, importantly, to simply play.

Free play is serious business

Author and research professor of psychology Dr Peter Gray attributes the rise in anxiety, depression, suicide and narcissism among children to the decline of play. Unstructured play is vital for the healthy development of children and teenagers. Through play kids learn to interact with others, develop physical skills necessary for school success and gain confidence they need to interact with peers.

How much is too much?

Some children can cope with busy schedules, while others flounder. As a rule of thumb, if your child or young person is struggling in any of these three areas: i) mental health, ii) schoolwork and studies, iii) their participation in family-life then it may be time to reduce their extra-curricular load.

Choosing the activities to omit from a schedule can be tricky, as your child or young person may have a different motivation for each. In short, each activity can be ‘the one they love.’ Here’s a good question to ask your child or young person that can make decision-making easier:

‘If all of your after-school activities were cancelled, which one(s) would you plead with me to re-enrol you in?’

Their answers will reveal a great deal about their commitment to each activity. Ideally, kids should be choosing extra-curricular activities that nourish them rather than cause anxiety and stress. Aim for two activity-free nights each week so that your child or young person can meet their study and family commitments.

The same principle for balance holds true for weekends. Make sure your kids enjoy some time free from structured activity, so they can refresh and recharge, ready for the week of school that lays ahead

Regards,

Ken and Lisa

Over the past 9 days, 14 lucky students have had the time of their lives! Somers school

camp is a challenging experience for the students where they are exposed to a number of

different situations. These situations include: adapting to new communities both in their

hut groups and activity groups, testing themselves on physical and mentally challenging

activities and dealing with being away from home.

These lucky students have had the best time while away, giving everything a go and

demonstrating the Bonbeach Primary School way. Making new friends and making

memories that will last a life time.

Although tired, Mr Cook has had the greatest time watching these students grow over

these nine days. He is very proud of the way they all presented themselves and dealt with

their own personal challenges throughout camp.

Grade 5/6 excursion to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens On Tuesday 5

th March, Grade 5/6 went to Cranbourne Botanical

Gardens. We were introduced to Sally, one of the instructors and ate our snack, before heading off to our activities. SPA’s first activity was looking into microscopes and discussing plants that live in the desert. Sally next walked us over to a big sand pit. We spoke about kangaroos and how they survive. We hen learned about wolf-spider dens, bandicoot dens and hopping mouse dens. We then made our own burrows. We walked down the ‘Weird and Wild’ and were allowed to touch and feel the plants. The last activity was to replant chrysocephalum/golden buttons which we got to take home. We had lunch and went hiking on a hikers track to get to a lookout. We played at a large playground, and some of us saw a wallaby before boarding the bus back to school! It was a fun and interesting experience. By Anna SPA
