“One Religion, like single type of food, cannot satisfy everybody. According to their varying mental dispositions, some people benefit from one kind of teaching, others from another. Each faith has the ability to produce fine, warmhearted people; and despite their espousal of often-contradictory philosophies, all religions have succeeded in doing so. Thus there is no reason to engage in divisive religious bigotry and intolerance, and every reason to cherish and respect all forms of spiritual practice.”

- His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

Programme Overview

The Interfaith Dialogue and Pilgrimage programme seeks to provide

space for young participants to embrace religious diversity, build cross-cultural understanding and encourage spiritual growth through first-hand exploration of different faith traditions.

The two-week programme involves visits to religious centres across South India. It will start from Bengaluru and move on to Mysuru, Shravanbelagola and Bylakuppe. The period will be dedicated to lectures/discussions on each faith and attending prayers and rituals. Interactive sessions are conducted in collaboration with respective centres of faith along with a guided tour of the places of worship.

“In the Buddhist investigation of reality, we traditionally employ four principles of reasoning: dependence, function, nature and evidence; hence both approaches (spiritual and scientific) seem to work in parallel,” said the Dalai Lama. Not a far stretch from the way scientists look for evidence. In line with this, we have also included sessions of interaction with neuroscientists and psychologists of our time.

Participants are requested to prepare themselves with a basic understanding of each faith prior to the commencement of the programme. As per the norms of the tour, please read the application form very carefully and stick to the fundamental instructions. However, there are no rigid directives and participants are requested to be understanding and open-hearted.

Modest accommodation will be provided at each centre with vegetarian meals, unless otherwise arranged at nearby commercial areas. The group will travel together and use local transport, as the centres are within a relatively small geographical area. Participants are requested to dress modestly. During the programme, transportation, accommodation and meals will be arranged by the Foundation and the group will be escorted by a staff member. During the pilgrimage, some places require extensive walking to reach the destination, and we prefer applicants to be physically fit. Should the participants require further information, please do contact us.

INTERFAITH PRAYERS WITH HH THE DALAI LAMA

On 31 March 2009, His Holiness the Dalai Lama along with some Indian friends and a few Tibetan colleagues visited eight places of prayer and worship in Delhi. They prayed for peace in

India and the happiness of its people. This was, first, a gesture of gratitude and appreciation by His

Holiness on behalf of the Tibetan people on the 50th anniversary of his arrival into exile in India. It was also a gesture,

celebrating the diversity of India and its long history of inter-faith harmony.

Programme Details MEDITATION AND YOGA 22- 29 June 6:00 - 6:45 Venue: Tibetan Youth Hostel, Bangalore

The main philosophy of yoga is simple: mind, body and spirit are one and cannot be clearly separated. Yet there is a multitude of philosophical ideas developed by looking into the deeper dimensions of the body, mind and spirit.

“ …..The best time for practicing meditation is in the morning, in a quiet place, when the mind is very clear and alert. It helps not to have eaten too much the night before nor to sleep too much; this makes the mind lighter and sharper the next morning. Gradually the mind will become more and more stable; mindfulness and memory will become clearer”.

– His Holiness the Dalai Lama

GURDWARA SRI GURU SINGH SABHA The largest Sikh shrine in Bangalore, the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, is situated on the banks of the Ulsoor Lake. The sprawling white building on the edges of the lake, is indeed a well-known place on the City’s landscape. Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara at Ulsoor was built in 1943 by A G Russell and was inaugurated in 1945. "While the Jollys and the Sahani families were the main forces behind the construction of the Gurudwara, all the community members and the Kohli and Chandoks families financed it under the leadership of Ahulwalia and the Gill family from the neighboring Haudin Road Sikh foundation. It was only later in 1975, that the first floor of the Gurudwara was built. The monument is known for its splendid structure - it has added to the beauty of the area and Kensington Road where it is situated, which is also popularly known as Gurudwara Road. Being the biggest Gurudwara in City, a huge gathering of Sikhs come here on Wednesdays for prayer and the ‘langar’ on Sundays. All the devotees are offered free meals on Sundays, in what is known as the ‘Langar Sewa’. Around 1000 people visit the Gurudwara on Sunday mornings, while more than 2,000-3000 people visit in the afternoon and seek blessings post blessings they have Guru Ka Langar(Meals).
