President’s Message

Welcome to the 145th Anniversary Banquet of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in the City of Cincinnati. Ireland, of course, has produced many great poets, fierce warriors and exceptional leaders of men. Your program tonight pays tribute to all three.

Seamus Heaney has been described as the world’s greatest living poet. From County Derry in the North of Ireland, Mr. Heaney is one of four Irishmen to have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (joining Shaw, Beckett and Yeats). The Mercantile Library brought Mr. Heaney to Cincinnati on October 20, 2012. What a treat. I hope you enjoy the Heaney selections in your program.

General William Haines Lytle was a hero of the Civil War who died 150 years ago at the Battle of Chickamauga. Lytle hailed from Cincinnati, but his family had close ties to Kentucky. He commanded the 10th Ohio or “Bloody Tinth,” a largely Irish regiment. Your program includes a profile of General Lyle, and I hope you enjoy learning more about the man after whom Lytle Park, Lytle Tower and Lytle Tunnel are named.

John J. O’Hara was the Society’s President in 1990. Judge O’Hara served as a Justice on the Kentucky Supreme Court and as Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney. He also served on the boards of St. Xavier High School and Xavier University. As a young lawyer, I tried my best to emulate the Judge. It’s taken the Society 23 years to install another Kentuckian as President, and I am honored to follow in his footsteps!

Recorded in several forms including MacGilfoyle, Gilfoyle, Guilfoyle, and Kilfoyle, the name originates from the pre-10th century Gaelic name Mac Gilla Phoil, meaning “The son of the follower of St. Paul.” It is said that some name holders in Ireland called Powell derive from the same source, but this is difficult to quantify as the English and Welsh surname Powell is also well recorded in Ireland. The clan once produced the chiefs of Kings County, which since the establishment of the Republic, has been renamed Offaly. The clan’s castle, which seems to have entirely disappeared, was in the village

of Shinrone. Why the first name holder was as renowned for his devotion to St. Paul as to be named after him is unclear, but a number of Irish surnames do originate from association with particular saints, taken from the early days of Christianity.

These days, the Guilfoyles are still found in County Offaly and neighboring County Tipperary. In 1986, when Casey and I honeymooned in Ireland, we had the pleasure of meeting Liam Guilfoyle, the proprietor of Hogan’s Pub in Birr, County Offaly. A lovely man, salt of the earth. More recently, on a family vacation to Ireland in 2008, we met Malachy Guilfoyle, Jr. and Sr., a firefighter and pipefitter, respectively, from Kilbeggan, County Tipperary. Meeting our transatlantic relations was a highlight of the trip, and it occurred to me that both men would feel right at home in the West Side of Cincinnati.

Speaking of the West Side, my mom hails from Westwood. One of nine, her name is Mary Kathryn, and I remember her many times spelling her middle name for others and proudly announcing “that’s the Irish spelling.” Better yet, she goes by “Mickey,” compliments of her red hair and freckles as a child. (No surprise there as my grandmother’s maiden name was Tighe.) Mom loves to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and she single-handedly imparted to me my love of Irish culture and history.

My dad grew up in Southgate, Kentucky. How he met and married mom somehow involved knocking her over the head and dragging her across the river. I never quite understood that growing up. Irish humor. Dad worked as a pipefitter and belonged to Local 392 in Cincinnati -- he worked with guys named Sullivan, Crellin, O’Hearn, and Monahan. A true Irish clan. But dad always professed not to understand the Irish, which is ironic since he is quintessentially Irish. He is an inveterate kidder and a natural storyteller, quick with a laugh or a jab. You need to be on your toes around dad!

Twenty-six years ago, I married Casey Thomas from Milford, Ohio. I now understand the story about knocking one’s wife over the head and dragging her across the river. Casey does not appreciate the story, but she gets it -- perhaps because her mother’s maiden name was Fay. At any rate, Casey is the consummate Irish mother who deftly suffers the quirks of her spouse while doting on her five sons and daughters: Kevin, Brian, Molly, Katie and Patrick. Does it get any more Irish than that?

Doug Flynn played with the

Cincinnati Reds on the World

Champion Big Red Machine teams

in 1975 and 1976. He went on to

play nine more years in the big leagues

with the Mets, Expos and Tigers.

Doug won a Gold Glove in 1980

with the Mets, and he tied the major

league record with three triples in a

game in 1979. He ranks in the top

10 all-time for fielding percentage

at second base.

After retiring from baseball in 1986, Doug served as Executive Director of

Kentucky’s anti-drug agency, Champions Against Drugs, for ten years. He

coached in the minor leagues for two years and then began a banking career

in 1997. He has been a correspondent banking officer at Central Bank &

Trust Co. in Lexington, Kentucky, ever since.

Doug currently serves on the following boards: Fellowship of Christian

Athletes, Professional Athletes Outreach and the American Association

for Prevention of Substance Abuse in Athletics. He was inducted into the

Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Doug makes his home in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife of 31 years, Olga.

Mid-Term BreakI sat all morning in the college sick bay

Counting bells knelling classes to a close.

At two o’clock our neighbours drove me home.

He was only 5-foot-6, but William Haines Lytle stood tall in the eyes of those he led onto bloody Civil War battlefields.

Officers of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a mostly Irish regiment from the Cincinnati area, thought enough of the brigadier general to present him with a jeweled Maltese cross on Aug. 9, 1863. Six weeks later he died a hero’s death at Chickamauga, Ga.

Lytle lived in Cincinnati but his family had close ties to Kentucky. A Democrat, he supported Stephen Douglas, rather than Lincoln, in the 1860 presidential election. Once the war started, though, Lytle fought vigorously to preserve the Union.

Much is known about his life because many of his letters and other documents, now known as the Lytle Papers, were saved by his family and donated to the Cincinnati Historical Society, based at the Museum Center. In 1999, Ruth C. Carter, compiled some of the them for a book, “For Honor Glory & Union”: The Mexican Civil War Letters of Brig. Gen. William Haines Lytle.

“Although a native son of Ohio, Lytle had a personality and temperament more akin to that of a Southern cavalier than a Yankee,” Carter writes in the book’s introduction.

When a dozen people enjoying a sunny lunch hour recently at Lytle Park were asked whether they knew anything about the park’s namesake, none did. But [150] years ago, everyone in Cincinnati knew of William Haines Lytle, member of a prominent, upper-class Queen City family.

He lived in the family mansion, on land that now includes Lytle Park. He attended college and studied law in Cincinnati. At 21, he left to serve in the Mexican War, but missed most of the fighting. Back in Cincinnati, he successfully ran for the Ohio Assembly, served one term, then returned home to practice law. Throughout his life he enjoyed writing poetry.

His hometown was populated by a number of abolitionists, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, who lived in the city from 1832 to 1850. But many others had differing views, including Lytle. Carter writes, “He believed abolition would result in huge social and economic problems and criticized Republicans for asserting that abolition could be accomplished by peaceful or legal means.”

Lytle’s sympathy for the rights of Southern slave owners did not outweigh his strong, pro-Union stance. In May 1861, he accepted a commission as colonel in the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Lytle’s first taste of battle came on Sept. 10, 1861 at Carnifex Ferry, in what is now West Virginia. While leading a charge on horseback, he caught a Confederate bullet in his left calf. He spent four months recovering in Cincinnati.

After a series of assignments, in October 1862 he joined Union forces attempting to halt a Confederate advance into Kentucky. The armies met at the battle of Perryville, during which Lytle was shot behind the ear. Confederates captured him, and later released him on parole.

Lytle was promoted to brigadier general in March 1863 and given command of the First Brigade, Third Division, 20th Army Corps of the Army of the Cumberland. Six months later, on Sept. 19, he led troops into battle near Chickamauga Creek.

On the battle’s second day, the 36-year old general was at the front, on horseback, leading a counterattack to stop Confederates who had broken through Union lines. Several bullets struck him and mortally wounded him.

Reaction to Lytle’s death in Cincinnati was remarkable. It was the biggest military funeral procession in the history of Cincinnati. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Six weeks before his death, when presented the Maltese cross by members of his old regiment, Lytle ended a speech this way: “That the day of ultimate triumph for the Union arms, sooner or later, will come, I do not doubt, for I have faith in the courage, the wisdom and the justice of the people. It may be not be for all of us here today to listen to the chants that greet the victor, nor to hear the brazen bells ring out the new nuptials of the States.

But those who do survive can tell, at least, to the people, how their old comrades, whether in the skirmish or the charge … died with their harness on, in the great war for Union and Liberty.”

Our Mission: The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation exists to foster strong Irish heritage by way of benevolence to the hungry and devotion to the Irish arts.

Our Vision:To become the pinnacle Foundation in the Greater Cincinnati region for the promotion and preservation of Irish culture, and friendly giving to the hungry in our area.

Our History:On March 17, 1771 and March 17, 1784, The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for the Relief of the Immigrant Irish was founded in Philadelphia and New York respectively. For over two centuries, both Philadelphia and New York have annually granted sums of money for the betterment of the Irish in their communities, giving to universities, hospitals, and individual scholarship. In 1868, the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati was founded, and thus our involvement with the spirit of the American Irish.

In 2002, the Trustees and Officers of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati formed The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation to focus on the promotion of Irish culture and feeding the hungry in our community.

Through special fund-raising events and private donations, The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation in Cincinnati is able to support these causes as others have done for their neighbors for over two-hundred years. Today, much about our land and people has changed, but one thing has remained the same- the Irish spirit and dedication to the betterment of community.

Our Beneficiaries:The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation is making a significant cultural impact in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. Since our founding, the Foundation has been providing rich cultural experiences promoting Irish heritage and arts. In addition to these culturally rich programs the Foundation has shown benevolence to the area’s hungry, regardless of their country of origin. One-hundred percent of our donors’ gifts go directly to those in need in our community or in support of Irish cultural events.
