8. Komagata Maru Incident- The Canadian Government imposed various rules and regulations to restrict immigration

from India.Rule 1:

- Indians who wanted to migrate to Canada for work should possess 200 Canadian dollarsas cash-in-hand.

- Salary per person for a day was only 10 cents.- So it was very difficult for people who were not so wealthy to possess 200 Canadian

dollars.Rule 2:

- Even if they managed to possess 200 Canadian dollars as cash-in-hand, only thepassengers of the ships which had directly sailed to Canada without halting at any placewere allowed by the Canadian Government to land.

- At that time, only a very few ships used to directly sail to Canada.- But the ticket fare of those ships was many times higher than that of other ships.

So what?- The steamship Komagata Maru was hired by Sikhs to illegally enter into Canada. They

thought that the Canadian Government would have no other go than granting them therefugee status and allowing them to stay in Canada.

- Komagata Maru started to sail from Hong Kong with 376 Sikhs in 1914.

- Baba Gurdit Singh made arrangements for the travel.- He was a well-to-do man in Singapore.- The ship started to sail on April 14.- Initially, only 165 passengers were boarded on the ship.- The ship picked up some passengers from Shanghai.- Some more passengers were also picked up from Yokahama of Japan.- The ship reached Vancouver of Canada on May 23.- But the ship was not allowed to halt there.- Indians who were already living there protested for the passengers of Komagata Maru.- They paid 22000 Canadian dollars to the shipping corporation.- Munshi Singh demanded justice and filed a suit.- Some people tried to hit the Komagata Maru by another ship called ‘Sea Lion’.- As violence broke out, the Canadian Government asked all Indians to quit Canada.- But Indians refused to obey the Canadian Government’s order.- Finally, only 24 Indians were admitted in Canada.- Others were sent back in the same ship.- The travel expenditure and fuel were provided by the Canadian Government.- The ship reached Calcutta (Budge Budge) on September 26.- The ship was halted at a distance of 17 km away from the port. British officers planned to

shift the passengers of the ship to a train and send them to Punjab.- But the passengers didn’t co-operate with the British officers.- Instead, they wanted to meet the Governor of Calcutta and hand over their holy book to a

Gurudhwara in Calcutta.- Violence broke out as their demands were not accepted by the British Government.- 20 people were dead and 9 injured in police firing.- 202 people were confined to jail.- What happened to 28 people was not known.- Only 62 people reached Punjab.- Gurdit Singh absconded.- Later, on the request of Gandhiji, he surrendered and imprisoned for 5 years.- Today, about 4 lakh Sikhs live in Canada.- They have erected a monument of Komagata Maru incident in Vancouver.- At present, more than 3 lakh Sri Lankan refugees live in Canada.- After the incident, the ship Komagata Maru was renamed as Hein Maru.

1. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant:- It is located in Thirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.- Two 1000 MW reactors are being installed in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.- The pact was signed between the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Russian

President Michael Korbachev in 1988.- But the project was not implemented for more than 10 years due to some political

confusion in Russia.- Even after the break-up of Soviet Union in 1991, the project was strongly opposed by

USA.- Because USA found the project as a violation to the rules of Nuclear Suppliers Group.- So the construction work was started in 2001.- Estimate – Rs.13615 crores- A minor port is being operated here from January 14, 2004.

- The port was established as machineries were damaged while transporting from Tuticorinport by the roadways.

- Since 2008, talks are on to install four more nuclear reactors.- These reactors are being constructed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited.- Sergei Ryzhov who was the brain behind the Light Water Reactors in Kudankulam

Nuclear Power Plant died recently in a plane crash.- These reactors are being constructed by NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India
