SONGBOOK ALL SONGS IN THIS BOOK CAN BE PLAYED ON THREE MAJOR CHORDS; CHORDS ONE, FOUR AND FIVE OF THE MAJOR SCALE.. Some of the songs are only two chords so if you want to start really simple just find these songs. SUGGESTED CHORDS: C, F AND G7 G, C AND D7 D, G AND A7

A, D AND E7 E, A AND B7 (I find this easiest) GUITAR: tune E,A D,G,B,D (standard) or suggest down a tone D,G,C,F,A,C if playing with Bb instruments such as trumpet, sax, clarinet which means everyone can play the same notes. Another way to play – especially good for complete beginners is to tune the guitar to a chord eg D A D F# A D, or C G C E G C UKE: Standard tuning is G, C, E, A (my dog has fleas) can also be tuned like last strings on guitar

1 4 5 in the key of E (this is the easiest for me)

all the chord shapes are available from http://guitar.about.com/library/blchordlibrary.htm. Other possibilities are D GA7, A D E7

A final note: in the list of songs the number on the right corresponds to the start note (thus in C, a 1 = C)

LITTLE BROWN JUG My wife and I lived all alone, In a little log hut we called our own; She loved gin and I loved rum, I tell you what, we’d lots of fun. Chorus: Ha, ha, ha, you and me, Little Brown Jug don’t I love thee; Ha, ha, ha, you and me, Little Brown Jug don’t I love thee. If all the folks in Adam’s race, Were gathered together in one place; Then I’d prepare to shed a tear, Before I’d part from you, my dear. ’Tis you who makes my friends my foes, ’Tis you who makes me wear old clothes; Here you are, so near my nose, So tip her up, and down she goes.

Chorus: If I’d a cow that gave such milk, I’d clothe her in the finest silk; I’d feed her on the choicest hay, And milk her forty times a day. Chorus: When I go toiling to my farm, I take little Brown Jug under my arm; I place it under a shady tree, Little Brown Jug, ’tis you and me. Chorus: The rose is red, my nose is, too, The violet’s blue, and so are you; And yet I guess before I stop We’d better take another drop. Chorus: 1 4 5 1 1 4 5 1

CLEMENTINE In a cavern, in a canyon, Excavating for a mine, Dwelt a miner, forty-niner And his daughter Clementine. Oh my darling, oh my darling Oh my darling, Clementine Thou art lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry, Clementine. Light she was and like a fairy, And her shoes were number nine, Herring boxes without topses Sandals were for Clementine Oh my darling, oh my darling Oh my darling, Clementine Thou art lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry, Clementine. Drove she ducklings to the water Every morning just at nine, Hit her foot against a splinter Fell into the foaming brine. Oh my darling, oh my darling Oh my darling, Clementine Thou art lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry, Clementine. Ruby lips above the water, Blowing bubbles soft and fine,

But alas, I was no swimmer, So I lost my Clementine. How I missed her, how I missed her How I missed my Clementine But I kissed her little sister And forgot my Clementine Oh my darling, oh my darling Oh my darling, Clementine Thou art lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry, Clementine. 1 1 1 5 4 1 5 1

LET IT BE When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom let it be And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Speaking word of wisdom let it be Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom let it be. And when the broken hearted people Living in the world agree, There will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is Still a chance that they will see There will be an answer, let it be. Let it be, let it be. yeah There will be an answer, let it be. And when the night is cloudy, There is still a light that shines on me, Shine on until tomorrow, let it be. I wake up to the sound of music Mother mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be. There will be an answer, let it be. Let it be, let it be, Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. 1 5 1 4 1 5 4 1 1 5 1 4 1 5 4 1 1 5 4 1 1 5 4 1

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE 1 1 4 1 4 4 1 1 5 5 1 1 The other night dear, as I lay sleeping I dreamed I held you in my arms But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken So I hung my head and I cried. Chorus: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey You'll never know dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away I'll always love you and make you happy, If you will only say the same. But if you leave me and love another, You'll regret it all some day: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…. You told me once, dear, you really loved me And no one else could come between. But not you've left me and love another; You have shattered all of my dreams: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…. In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me When I awake my poor heart pains. So when you come back and make me happy I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine….

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly There was an old lady who swallowed a fly. But I don't know why she swallowed a fly. Perhaps she'll die. There was an old lady who swallowed a spider, that wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly But I don't know … etc. There was an old lady who swallowed a bird Well how absurd to swallow a bird! She swallowed the

bird to catch the spider that.. etc. There was an old lady who swallowed a cat Well fancy that, to swallow a cat! She swallowed the cat to catch the bird etc There was an old woman who swallowed a cow I don’t know how she swallowed a cow There was an old woman who swallowed a Horse She’s dead, or course!

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Swing low, sweet chariot, Comin' for to carry me home. Swing low, sweet chariot, Comin' for to carry me home. I looked over Jordan and what did I see, Comin' for to carry me home, A band of angels comin' after me, Comin' for to carry me home. Chorus I'm sometimes up and sometimes down. Comin' for to carry me home. But still I know I'm heaven bound. Comin' for to carry me home. Chorus If you get there before I do, Comin' for to carry me home.

Tell all my friends I'm comin' there too. Comin' for to carry me home. Chorus If I get there before you do, Comin' for to carry me home. I'll cut a hole and pull you through. Comin' for to carry me home. 1 1 4 1

This Land Is Your Land (Woody Guthrie)

This land is your land, this land is my land, From California to the New York Island, From the redwood forests to the Gulf Stream waters, This land was made for you and me. As I went walking that ribbon of highway, I saw above me that endless skyway. I saw below me that golden valley. This land was made for you and me. <chorus> I've roamed and rambled, and followed my footsteps, O'er the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts And all around me this voice came sounding, "This land was made for you and me."

<chorus> I followed your low hills, and I followed your cliff rims, Your marble canyons and sunny bright waters, This voice came calling, as the fog was lifting, "This land was made for you and me." <chorus> As the sun was a-shining and I was strolling Through the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds rolling. I could feel inside me and see all 'round me, "This land was made for you and me."

Annie's Song (John Denver)

You fill up my senses like a night in a forest, Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain. Like a storm on the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean, You fill up my senses, come fill me again. Come let me love you, let me give my life to you. Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms. Let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you. Come let me love you, come love me again.

BLUE SUEDE SHOES Well, it's one for the money, Two for the show, Three to get ready, Now go, cat, go. But don't you step on my blue suede shoes. You can do anything but lay off of my Blue suede shoes. Well, you can knock me down, Step in my face, Slander my name All over the place. Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh, Honey, lay off of my shoes Don't you step on my Blue suede shoes. You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

You can burn my house, Steal my car, Drink my liquor From an old fruit jar. Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh, Honey, lay off of my shoes Don't you step on my blue suede shoes. You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

How much is that doggie in the window How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) The one with the waggley tail How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) I do hope that doggie's for sale I must take a trip to California And leave my poor sweetheart alone If he has a dog he won't be lonesome And the doggie will have a good home How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) The one with the waggley tail How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) I do hope that doggie's for sale

I read in the papers there are robbers (roof, roof) With flashlights that shine in the dark My love needs a doggie to protect him And scare them away with one bark I don't want a bunny or a kitty I don't want a parrot that talks I don't want a bowl of little fishies He can't take a goldfish for a walk How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) The one with the waggley tail How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf) I do hope that doggie's for sale 1 1 5 5 5 5 1 1 1 1 5 5 5 5 1 -5 1

Yellow Bird Yellow bird, up high in banana tree. Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me. Did you lady friend leave the nest again? That is very sad, makes me feel so bad. You can fly away, in the sky away. You’re more lucky than me. I also had a pretty girl, she's not with me today. They're all the same those pretty girls. Take tenderness, then they fly away. Yellow Bird, yellow bird.

Did you lady friend leave the nest again? That is very sad, makes me feel so bad. You can fly away, in the sky away. You’re more lucky than me. Wish that I were a yellow bird, I'd fly away with you. But I am not a yellow bird, So here I sit. 1 1 5 1 1 1 5 1 4 1 5 1 4 1 5 1

In the Summertime In the summertime when the weather's high, you can stretch right up and touch the sky, when the weather's fine, you got women, you got women on your mind. Have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find. If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy's poor, just do as you feel. Speed along the lane, Do a ton, or a ton and twenty-five. When the sun goes down, you can make it, make it good in a lay-by. We're not grey people, we're not dirty, we're not mean. We love everybody, but we do as we think. When the weather's fine we go fishing or go swimming in the sea. We're always happy, life's for living, yeah, that's our philosophy. Sing along with us, dee-dee-dee-dee-dee. Da-da-da-da-da...Yeah, we're happy happy, da-da-da-da-dah.

When the winter's here, then it's party time. Bring a bottle, wear your bright clothes. It'll soon be summertime, and we'll sing again, we'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down. If she's rich, if she's nice, bring you're friends and we'll all go into town. 1 1 1 1 4 4 1 1 5 5 1 1

Waltzing Matilda

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong Under the shade of a coolibah tree And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me. Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled, "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong, Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee. And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me."….. Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred Down came the troopers, one, two, three. "Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?" "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me."

Waltzing Matilda, Up jumped the swagman, sprang into the billabong "You'll never catch me alive," said he And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong, "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled, "You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me." 1-5 1-4 1 5

IF I HAD A HAMMER Paul Seeger If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning, I'd hammer in the evening, all over this land, I'd hammer out danger, I'd hammer out a warning, I'd hammer out the love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land. If I had a bell, I'd ring it in the morning, I'd ring it in the evening, all over this land, I'd ring out danger, I'd ring out a warning, I'd ring out the love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land. If I had a song, I'd sing it in the morning, I'd sing it in the evening, all over this land, I'd sing out danger, I'd sing out a warning, I'd sing out the love

between my brothers and my sisters All over this land. Now I got a hammer, and I got a bell. And I have a song to sing all over this land. It's the hammer of justice, it's the bell of freedom, It's a song about the love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land. 1 1 1 5 1 4 4-1 4-1 4-1 1 5

Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport

Rolf wrote this in 1957 (Harris) Ardmore & Beechwood Ltd / EMI (P) 1963 Arr. Johnnie Spence - Produced by George Martin

[Spoken:] There's an old Australian stockman, lying, dying, and he gets himself up on one elbow, and he turns to his mates, who are gathered 'round him and he says:

Watch me wallabys feed mate. Watch me wallabys feed. They're a dangerous breed mate.

So watch me wallabys feed. Altogether now!

Tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down.

Tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down.

Keep me cockatoo cool, Curl, keep me cockatoo cool.

Don't go acting the fool, Curl, just keep me cockatoo cool. Altogether now!

Take me koala back, Jack,

take me koala back.

He lives somewhere out on the track, Mac,

so take me koala back. Altogether now!

Mind me platypus duck, Bill, mind me platypus duck.

Don't let him go running amok, Bill, mind me platypus duck. Altogether now!

Play your digeridoo, Blue,

play your digeridoo.

POP GOES THE WEASEL Half a pound of tuppenny rice, Half a pound of treacle. That’s the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel. Up and down the City road, In and out the Eagle, That’s the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel. Every night when I go out The monkey’s on the table. Take a stick and knock it off Pop goes the weasel. A penny for a ball of thread Another for a needle, That’s the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel. All around the cobblers bench The monkey chased the people; The donkey thought ’twas all in fun, Pop goes the weasel

Lavender's blue

Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green, When I am king, dilly, dilly, you shall be queen. Who told you so, dilly, dilly, who told you so? 'Twas my own heart, dilly, dilly, that told me so. Call up your men, dilly, dilly, set them to work Some with a rake, dilly, dilly, some with a fork. Some to make hay, dilly, dilly, some to thresh corn. While you and I, dilly, dilly, keep ourselves warm. Lavender's green, dilly, dilly, Lavender's blue, If you love me, dilly, dilly, I will love you. Let the birds sing, dilly, dilly, And the lambs play; We shall be safe, dilly, dilly, Out of harm's way.

I love to dance, dilly, dilly, I love to sing; When I am queen, dilly, dilly, You'll be my king. Who told me so, dilly, dilly, Who told me so? I told myself, dilly, dilly, I told me so. 1 1 4 4 1 1 5 1

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it Is something quite atrocious If you say it loud enough You'll always sound precocious Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay Because I was afraid to speak When I was just a lad My father gave me nose a tweak And told me I was bad But then one day I learned a word That saved me aching nose The biggest word I ever heard And this is how it goes: Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it Is something quite atrocious If you say it loud enough You'll always sound precocious Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay So when the cat has got your tongue There's no need for dismay Just summon up this word And then you've got a lot to say But better use it carefully Or it may change your life One night I said it to me girl And now me girl's my wife! She's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

The Gas Man Cometh Flanders and Swann 1 1 1-5 1, 4 15 5, 1 1 1-5 1, 4 1 4-5 1, ( 1 1 5 1) 'Twas on a Monday morning the gas man came to call. The gas tap wouldn't turn - I wasn't getting gas at all. He tore out all the skirting boards to try and find the main And I had to call a carpenter to put them back again. Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do. 'Twas on a Tuesday morning the carpenter came round. He hammered and he chiselled and he said: "Look what I've found: your joists are full of dry rot But I'll put them all to rights". Then he nailed right through a cable and out went all the lights! Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do. 'Twas on a Wednesday morning the electrician came. He called me Mr. Sanderson, which isn't quite the name. He couldn't reach the fuse box without standing on the bin And his foot went through a window so I called the glazier in. Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do. 'Twas on a Thursday morning the glazier came round With his blow torch and his putty and his merry glazier's song. He put another pane in - it took no time at all But I had to get a painter in to come and paint the wall. Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do. 'Twas on a Friday morning the painter made a start. With undercoats and overcoats he painted every part: Every nook and every cranny - but I found when he was gone He'd painted over the gas tap and I couldn't turn it on! Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do. On Saturday and Sunday they do no work at all; So 'twas on a Monday morning that the gasman came to call...

BLOWING IN THE WIND 1 4 1 1 1 4 5 5 x3 4 5 1 1 4 5 1 1 How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man? How many seas must a white dove sail before she can sleep in the sand? How many times must the cannon balls fly before they are forever banned? The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind. The answer is blowin' in the wind. How many years can a mountain exist Before it's washed to the sea? How many years can some people exist Before they're allowed to be free? How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn't see? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind How many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky? How many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? How many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind.

CHOO CHOO CH' BOOGIE I Heading for the station with a pack on my back Tired of transportation in the back of a hack IV I love to hear the rhythm of the clickety clack I And hear the lonesome whistle, see the smoke from the stack V Pal around with Democratic fellows named Mack I So, Take me right back to the track, Jack CHORUS IV Choo choo, choo choo ch' boogie I Woo woo, woo woo ch' boogie IV Choo choo, choo choo ch' boogie V I Take me right back to the track, Jack VERSE 2 You reach your destination, but alas & alack You need some compensation to get back in the black You take the morning paper from the top of the stack And read the situation from the front to the back The only job that's open needs a man with a knack So put it right back in the rack, jack CHORUS IV Choo choo, choo choo ch' boogie I Woo woo, woo woo ch' boogie IV Choo choo, choo choo ch' boogie V I Take me right back to the track, Jack VERSE 3 Well I'm gonna settle down by the railroad track And lead the life of Riley in a beaten down shack And when I hear the whistle I can peep through the crack And see the train a' rollin' while she's ballin' the jack I just love the rhythm of the clickety clack So take me right back to the track BROWN GIRL IN THE RING (Trad) 3
