Ezekiel 38-39

I. God’s Declaration of the Nations

A. He foretells

the future

(Isa 46:9-10) Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I

am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end

from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I

will do all my pleasure:

(Isa 48:3-5) I have declared the former things from the

beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. Because I knew that thou

art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; I have

even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I

shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

B. Fierceness

(Isa 40:15) Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are

counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the

isles as a very little thing.

(Jer 10:10) But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the

earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to

abide his indignation

NOTES

To fully understand the prophecy of Russia in Ezekiel 38 and 39, you must understand the prophecies given in Ezekiel 36 and 37.

Though God was clear that his son would rule this world from a throne in Israel and all the world would be blessed through that nation, he also was clear that if they didn’t remain faithful to him that they would suffer and be persecuted. They would also lose their homeland, and be scattered among the nations

NOTES

That prophecy was fulfilled in 70 A.D. when the Roman General Titus came through Jerusalem and leveled the city. And for 1900 years that were removed from the land and scattered throughout the world.

Even secular historians call it a miracle that Israel was able to become a nation again, along with the people being able to keep their identity.

(Eze 36:24) For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather

you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

(Eze 37:21) And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel

from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:

(Amo 9:15) And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

The events between 36-37 and 40• Between Israel becoming a nation in 36-37 and the Lord’s 2nd coming in 40, God tells us 17 times that Russia will attack Israel in 38-39

(Eze 38:16) And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

II. The Determining of the Nations

(Eze 38:1-9) And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of

Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I

will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling

swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house

of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the

land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations,

and they shall dwell safely all of them. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land,

thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

The Geographical Proof • (Eze 38:15) And thou shalt come

from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:

• (Eze 39:2) And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:

The Historical Proof • Gen. 10 is know as the “Table of

Nations” because you can trace back all the nations and races to 3 sons of Noah.

• After the flood Noah’s son’s and grandsons and great grandson’s began to migrate in to various parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe

• The places to which they would come to settle would be name many times after the men that lead them there. (Douglasville, Carrollton etc.)

(Gen 10:1) Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah,

Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

(Gen 10:2) The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and

Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

(Gen 10:3) And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and

Togarmah.

MAGOG• He left Asia minor and went to the

southern part of the land we now call Russia and settled in an area with the Caucasus Mountains as its southern boundaries.

• The Scythians are given credit for populating Russia. Josephus, the 1st century Jewish historian said in one of his books “Magog is called the Scythians by the Greeks”

• In the Arabic language, the name for the “Great wall of China” is “The wall of Al Magog” or the wall against Magog.

MESHECH• Meshech and his tribe left Asia

Minor and went to the western part of the land we know as Russia and settle in an area known as Meshech.

• Wilhelm Gasenius, in his unsurpassed Hebrew Lexicon says “Meshech was the founder of the Moschi, a barbarous people, who dwelt in the Moschian mountains”

• He goes on to say that the Greek name “Moschi” which was derived from the Hebrew name “Meshech” is where the city of Moscow got its name.

NOTES

TUBAL• Tubal with his tribe left Asia Minor,

and went to the Eastern part of the land we call Russia, and settled in what we refer to as the Siberian region.

• What is called “Tubal” in our Bible, is what is called “Tobolsk” today on our map.*Note: In the former Soviet Union, Tobolsk was the eastern capital, and Moscow was the western capital.

NOTES

GOG • Literally means “mountain”• The name for the Caucasus Mountains

in the oriental tongue means “Fort of Gog” or “Gog’s last stand.”

• Russians call the tops of the Caucasus Mountains “Gogh.”

• In Ezekiel 32:2, however, “Gog” is the representative name of the nation’s leader that would be leading the invasion of Israel.

• (i.e. The leader of the Land of Magog)• If the text would have been against our

own country it would have read like this “Son of man, set thy face against Obama, of the United States, the chief prince of Washington and New York, and prophesy against him,

The Linguistical Proof • (Eze 38:2) Son of man, set thy

face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

• The Hebrew word for “chief” is Rosh, meaning top

• The word “Russia” can be traced back to this Hebrew word “Rosh”

• Wilhelm Gasenius, in his unsurpassed Hebrew Lexicon says “Rosh was a designation for the tribes then north of the Tarsus Mountains, dwelling in the neighboring Volga.
