The I.S. sent us a note giving us the address of tns Hollan section and pointing out that if we want any of Trotsky’s pamphlets in Kederlands we can get the,,, from tuere. 1)0 you tain* that you could do any good with them? Dear Koston,

World shaking events. The I.W.C. has split and we are forming a new club which we propose to call “The New International Workers Club."

Purdy leaves today for Abyssinia! - Poor Mussolini! Following Purdy's expulsion by the committee Saperstein,Glass ana Gordon^raised a great outcry about bureaucracy, ao we called a special meeting at which the opposition showed that the bureaucracy cry was merely a stick with which to beat the dog, because they even refused to discuss, confirm or countermand the expulsion but concentrated only on "bureaucracy". The result was a stormy meeting which closed bv the party group marching out. I am now able to comprehend fully your "up and outer attitude" in the Lenin Club. We hear that they ended up by squabbling among themselves. Our fraction promptly met and started to build the new club. Saperstein ana Gordon have made it quite impossible ever to accept them into the branch. The new turn makes it necessary t<? raise the question of a Fourth International Club. We will get all Che best elements in the new club, particularly those who are totally uninterested in the squabbles and only come to lectures. Our gains include contacts and the experience of the club. We lose a little furniture and a few books, but most important we lose the strategic position of F.Glass in her bookshop. We have been discussing openings bookshop in conjunction with the club.Do you think this is a good plan? What is the minimum capital required to start? How will we solve the question of buying? will you help us and can you give us any hints on the best routine to adopt?

Last night Saperstein accompanied by Gordon arrived at my roomo Saperstein pretended that he wanted some C.P. papers he had lent me, but his real object was revealed when he said he would "look for me" if the papers were not forthco m ing the following day. These threats of physical violence are made in front of Mil of course, to give them added weight.

l<53

Mil ' 3 sleepless nights axe of much more concern to me than the prospects of a black eye.But all this is in the days march. In shedding the dross that

has accumulated around ‘’Trotskyism” we are testing our sinews for the real fight. Nothing is ever lost. Our tempEEature is rising and that in itself augurs well for the party.

Please write immediately to Lambley. Knock Gordon F.Glass and Saperstein.

Dear comrade,

Your letter of the 3rd Sept. was discussed ^ast night

at a Branch meeting here.

So far as we are concerned, the position was and is^ auite clear. On the 17th August, the Johannesburg Branch was dissolved (you were preseit at this meeting) and for three d a y s .th a t is up till the 2 jth August, there was no xsranch and therefore no

members of a Branch.

This was pointed out to you in our letter of th e .27 tn auphst Your reply does not state clearly what your intentions are. ^e^an *o n ly repeat t S t if you intend to Participate in tne work of the Party, you must apply to the secretary of tne Johannes g

Branch in tne usual way.

Yours for Communism,

General Secretary.

Dear Comrade,

Your letter of the 3rd September was put before tue branch here and discussed last night.

Ihe Cape lown branch is of the opinion that since the Johannesburg Bianch was dissolved on tae 17th August, a Branch no longer existed, and consequently there were no longer any members

of the Branch.

On the 29th August, Comrade h .L e e , tne former oecre- ■feary of the Branch and a member of the Central Coina-lttee, legitimately called a meeting for the purpose of reconstituting the uranch.

It i not within the Jurisdiction of the Cape lown Branch to decide for what grounds some members of the former *>0- h a n n e s b u r g iJr&noh were not invited to attend this meeting of tae

20th August.

*ie cannot, of coarse, send to anyone not a member of

the Party a copy of kinutes.

I f you really desire to work in tae building up of a Bolshevik-Leninist party, you suould apply for membership in tne usual way, namely, to the Secretary of tne Johannesburg Branca.

Yours foe Communism,

General oecretary

Dear ie e ,

Enclosed copies of oar letters to Gordon and oaperstein. Between you and me, a ll of us here, including myself, are getting a bit v eary of this endless insensate treadmill of Joaannesaurgisn quarrels. I hope this is the end of it . And I hope that we oacked you up a ll right, of course, X have a pretty good idea of now you

must feel about it .

Your idea of blithely starting a bookshop made me lau^n. Give up the idea, x’erish the thought1. Have y ju anybody up there

who is prepared to make it a life-work and to put up at least 3 Cj quidlets? I f you know anyone with that r-uch money, borrow it , and we will print the Spark, xf Glass cannot pay her Pioneer Publishers account sjge must be in a bad way but that is for her baeke:s to worry about. Some day, when I finally meet you perhaps, l 11 t e n you the story of how kodern .Books got started, it *as a lluJce.

Lambley was on the doorstep when I opened the shop this

morning. He is in Cape Town for good now.

1 8th S e p t ., 1933

Dear Lee ,

Have been waiting to hear from you. Things not too good with us at the moment, nothing serious, Just personal muck and ab- scence of really good health. Burlak too. too articles ready yet. Doubt if oull have them by 23rd which is day when I must start on
