  • Increasingly Challenging Drilling Environments

    The continuous development in oil and gas drilling operations has resulted in a significant increase in extended-reach wells and horizontal drilling procedures. These deeper and more deviated wells call for drill strings with higher torsional yield strength drill pipe bodies and greater torque capacity tool joints than standard API connections can offer.

    Due to the high financial risks associated with drilling operations today, oil and gas companies are continuously looking at mitigating drilling risks and reducing total drilling costs. This involves improving drilling efficiency and optimizing drilling programs by using versatile assets with superiorperformance capabilities.

    Operational Challenges

    Standard API connections have shown their limitations, both in terms of reach and in terms of hydraulicefficiency when drilling complex wells in challenging environments. Proprietary rotary double shoulderconnections with API thread forms provide the extra performance capabilities necessary to facilitatedrilling in all environments including extended reach or ultra-deep wells and deepwater drilling, especially when combined with Sour Service or Arctic conditions.

    The Solution

    VAM EIS is a high-torque, double-shoulder connection that is fully intermateable with API connections. As additionaltorque is applied, the pin nose makes contact with the internalshoulder. The internal shoulder absorbs the higher frictionalload, providing the connection with improved torquecapability. VAM EIS high strength double shoulderconnections from Vallourec set a new connection performancestandard at cost efficiencies similar to that of API connections.

    The additional torsional strength provides exceptionalperformance in the most difficult well conditions, such ashighly deviated or extended reach wells. This design alsobenefits service life with a significantly greater wear capability.

    VAM EIS is available in drill pipe sizes from 2-7/8 to 6-5/8OD, including 5-7/8, and in a wide range of steel grades,including sour service, low temperature and high strength.

  • Operational Benefits

    Higher torque performance comes standard with VAM EIS. The additional torsional strength provides exceptionalperformance in difficult drilling conditions such as extendedreach drilling, horizontal wells and deviated wells. VAM EIS is fully intermateable with API and offers:

    Higher torsional strength than standard API connections(about 50% more than API)

    Improved hydraulics and annular clearance

    Fully tested intermateability with API connections

    Extended MU range offering more flexibility for varyingoperational requirements

    Allows for using similar ODs but withincreased IDs while increasing torsionalstrength
