First Station: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have

redeemed the world.

Then Jesus went with

them to a garden called

Gethsemane and told his

disciples, “Stay here while I go

over there and pray.”

Taking along Peter and

the two sons of Zebedee, he

plunged into an agonizing

sorrow. Then he said, “This

sorrow is crushing my life out.

Stay here and keep vigil with

me.”

Going a little ahead, he

fell on his face, praying, “My

Father, if there is any way, get

me out of this. But please, not what I want. You, what do you want?”

When he came back to his disciples, he found them sound asleep. He said to

Peter, “Can’t you stick it out with me a single hour? Stay alert; be in prayer so you

don’t wander into temptation without even knowing you’re in danger. There is a part

of you that is eager, ready for anything in God. But there’s another part that’s as lazy

as an old dog sleeping by the fire.” Matthew 26:36-41

V. Go to dark Gethsemane.

R. Your Redeemer’s conflict see. From Hymn 171

Let us pray. (Silence)

O God, you know us to be set in the midst of

so many and great dangers, that by reason of the

frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright:

Grant us such strength and protection as may

support us in all dangers, and carry us through all

temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Second Station: Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

No sooner were the words

out of his mouth when Judas,

the one out of the Twelve,

showed up, and with him a gang

of ruffians, sent by the high

priests, religion scholars, and

leaders, brandishing swords and

clubs.

The betrayer had worked

out a signal with them: “The one

I kiss, that’s the one—seize him.

Make sure he doesn’t get away.”

He went straight to Jesus and

said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.

The others then grabbed him

and roughed him up. One of the

men standing there unsheathed

his sword, swung, and came

down on the Chief Priest’s

servant, lopping off the man’s

ear. Mark 14:43-47

V. Judas the betrayer had given

them a sign.

R. The one that I will kiss is the

man; arrest him!

Let us pray. (Silence)

Almighty God, whose dear son came only to love, but was rejected by the

people and betrayed with a kiss. Forgive us the times we, too, have betrayed others

and turned against your son, and call us always into a loving relationship of trust in

you. Through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Third

Station: Jesus is

Condemned

by the

Sanhedrin

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

When it was

morning, the religious

leaders of the people

and the high priests

and scholars all got together and

brought him before their High Council.

They said, “Are you the

Messiah?”

He answered, “If I said yes, you

wouldn’t believe me. If I asked what

you meant by your question, you

wouldn’t answer me. So here’s what I

have to say: From here on the Son of

Man takes his place at God’s right

hand, the place of power.”

They all said, “So you admit your

claim to be the Son of God?” “You’re the ones who keep saying it,” he said.

But they had made up their minds, “Why do we need any more evidence? We’ve

all heard him as good as say it himself.” Luke 22:66-71

V. God did not spare his own Son:

R. But delivered him up for us all.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first

he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was

crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the

cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Fourth Station: Jesus is Denied by St. Peter

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have

redeemed the world.

All this time, Peter was sitting out in the

courtyard. One servant girl came up to him and

said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean.”

In front of everybody there, he denied it. “I

don’t know what you’re talking about.”

As he moved over toward the gate,

someone else said to the people there, “This

man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”

Again he denied it, salting his denial with

an oath: “I swear, I never laid eyes on the man.”

Shortly after that, some bystanders

approached Peter. “You’ve got to be one of them.

Your accent gives you away.”

Then he got really nervous and swore. “I

don’t know the man!”

Just then a rooster crowed.

Peter remembered what Jesus had

said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” He went

out and cried and cried and cried. Matthew 26:69-75

V. By your own you were rejected; it was me who denied you.

R. Pity me, love me, beyond my deserving. Adapted from Hymn 158

Let us pray. (Silence)

Almighty and eternal God, so draw

our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so

fill our imaginations, so control our will that

we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated

to you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus

Christ. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal

One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 6: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

6

Fifth Station: Jesus is

Judged by

Pontius Pilate

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have

redeemed the world.

At dawn’s first light, the high priests, with the

religious

leaders and

scholars,

arranged a

conference with the entire Jewish Council. After

tying Jesus securely, they took him out and

presented him to Pilate.

Pilate asked him, “Are you the ‘King of

the Jews’?”

He answered, “If you say so.” The high

priests let loose a barrage of accusations.

Pilate asked again, “Aren’t you going to

answer anything? That’s quite a list of

accusations.” Still, he said nothing.

Pilate was impressed, really impressed. Mark 15:1-5

V. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,

R. yet he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:7

Let us pray. (Silence)

O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved,

in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift

us, we pray you, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 7: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

Sixth Station:

Jesus is Flogged at the Pillar and Crowned with Thorns

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have

redeemed the world.

Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped.

The soldiers, having braided a crown from

thorns, set it on his head, threw a purple robe

over him, and approached him with, “Hail, King of

the Jews!”

Then they greeted him with slaps in the

face. John 19:1-3

V. O sacred head, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn.

R. Show me, O Love most highest, the brightness of thy face. from Hymn 168

Let us pray. (Silence)

Lord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and head

to wear a crown of thorns: Give us courage to accept our call to follow you, knowing

that, though we will never endure the shame and pain that Jesus experienced, our

devotion as Jesus Followers sometimes means we will be persecuted for your name’s

sake. We will follow you; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 8: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

8

Seventh Station: Jesus Bears the Cross

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

When the high priests and police saw him, they shouted in a frenzy, “Crucify!

Crucify!”

Pilate told them, “You take him. You crucify him. I find nothing wrong with

him.”

They shouted back, “Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him!”

Pilate said, “I am to crucify your king?”

The high priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.”

Pilate caved into their demand. He turned him over to be crucified.

They took Jesus away. Carrying his cross, Jesus went out…. John 19:6; 15-19

V. The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all:

R. For the transgression of my people was he stricken.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Almighty God, whose beloved Son willingly endured the agony and shame of

the cross for our redemption: Give us courage to take up our cross and follow him;

who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 9: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

9

Eighth Station:

Jesus is Helped by Simon the Cyrenian to Carry the Cross V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

There was a man walking by, coming

from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of

Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry

Jesus’ cross. Mark 15:21

V. Whoever does not bear his own cross and

come after me:

R. Cannot be my disciple.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served but to serve: bless

all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others; that with

wisdom, patience, and courage, they may minister in his Name to the suffering, the

friendless, and the needy; for the love of him who laid down his life for us, your Son

our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 10: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

10

Ninth Station: Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

A huge crowd of people

followed, along with women

weeping and carrying on.

At one point Jesus turned to

the women and said, “Daughters of

Jerusalem, don’t cry for me. Cry for

yourselves and for your children.

The time is coming when they’ll say,

‘Lucky the women who never

conceived! Lucky the wombs that

never gave birth! Lucky the breasts

that never gave milk!’ Then they’ll

start calling to the mountains, ‘Fall

down on us!’ calling to the hills,

‘Cover us up!’ If people do these

things to a live, green tree, can you

imagine what they’ll do with

deadwood?” Luke 23:27-31

V. Those who sowed with tears:

R. Will reap with songs of joy.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Teach your Church, O Lord, to mourn

its sins, and to repent and forsake them;

that, by your pardoning grace, the results of

our iniquities may not be visited upon our

children and our children’s children;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 11: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

11

Tenth Station: Jesus is Crucified

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they

crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the

other on his left.

Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know

what they’re doing.” Luke 23:33-35

V. They pierce my hands and my feet:

R. They stare and gloat over me.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the

cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe

us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do

not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 12: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

12

Eleventh Station:

Jesus Promises His Kingdom to the Good Thief

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we

bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you

have redeemed the world.

One of the criminals hanging

alongside cursed him: “Some Messiah

you are! Save yourself! Save us!”

But the other one made him

shut up: “Have you no fear of God?

You’re getting the same as him. We

deserve this, but not him—he did

nothing to deserve this.”

Then he said, “Jesus,

remember me when you enter your

kingdom.”

He said, “Don’t worry, I will.

Today you will join me in paradise.” Luke 23:39-43

V. Jesus, remember me

R. When you come into your kingdom.

Let us pray. (Silence)

Lord, for all my sins I turn to you in sorrow and repentance. Receive me again

into the arms of your mercy, and restore me to the blessed company of your faithful

people; through him in whom you have redeemed the world, your Son our Savior

Jesus Christ. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 13: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

13

Twelfth Station:

Jesus Speaks to His Mother and the Beloved Disciple

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

While the soldiers were looking after

themselves, Jesus’ mother, his aunt, Mary the

wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood at the

foot of the cross.

Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he

loved standing near her. He said to his mother,

“Woman, here is your son.” Then to the disciple,

“Here is your mother.” From that moment the

disciple accepted her as his own mother. John 19:25-27

V. Her tears run down her cheeks:

R. And now she has someone to comfort her.

Let us pray. (Silence)

O God, who had compassion on your faithful servant, Mary and provided her a

comforter: Grant to us that we may support each other through the challenges of

life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Page 14: 14 Stations of the Cross...1 Stations of the Cross Good Friday April 10, 2020 Opening Devotions Officiant In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord,

14

Thirteenth Station: Jesus Dies on the Cross

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark,

the darkness lasting three hours—a total blackout. The

Temple curtain split right down the middle.

Jesus called loudly, “Father, I place my life in your

hands!” Then he breathed his last. Luke 23:44-46

V. Christ for us became obedient unto death:

R. Even death on a cross.

Let us pray. (Silence)

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-

begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his

glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our

enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may

evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection;

who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Fourteenth Station:

Jesus is Placed in the Tomb

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless

you:

R. Because by your holy cross you

have redeemed the world.

V. You will not abandon me to the grave:

R. Nor let your holy One see corruption.

Let us pray. (Silence)

O God, your blessed Son was laid in a tomb

in a garden, and rested on the Sabbath day:

Grant that we who have been buried with him in

the waters of baptism may find our perfect rest

in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he

lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, Have mercy upon us.

Concluding Prayers Officiant Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have

redeemed us:

All Save us and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord.

Officiant Let us pray. (Silence is kept.)

We thank you, heavenly Father, that you have delivered us from

the dominion of sin and death and brought us into the kingdom of

your Son; and we pray that, as by his death he has recalled us to

life, so by his love he may raise us to eternal joys; who lives and

reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

for ever. Amen.

To Christ our Lord who loves us, and washed us in his own blood,

and made us a kingdom of priests to serve his God and Father, to

him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Pierce my heart, saving Jesus, that tears of penitence and love may

be my food and drink day by day that I may be converted entirely

to you, my heart a constant dwelling for you, my words and works

a constant witness to you, my passing a final return into you.

Amen. ~From Saint Brigit’s Prayers on the Passion

Here, dying for the world,

the world’s life hung,

Bathing a world’s sin

in that deathly tide;

That downbent head

raised earth above the stars;

O timeless wonder!

Life, because One died.

~Alcuin
