An Emmy for Elizabeth

LYDENBURG cannot be more proud of Elizabeth Reid nee Steinberg. She grew up in Lydenburg and was a learner at both the Lydenburg Laerskool and High School Lydenburg. Her parents are well known family practitioner Dr Jan Steinberg and his wife Mrs Cobie Steynberg.She won in the 36th ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY® AWARDS, Category: OUTSTANDING GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ART DIRECTION. The winning Emmy was for a 60 minute show on NatGeo Wild (http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/wild/) called 'Future Cat'. Elizabeth, working for Big Machine (http://www.bigmachine.net/) at the time was one of two Art Directors responsible for the visual styling and overall aesthetic for the animated components of the show, which constituted around 80% of the work - a considerable amount for a team of this size and show of this length. Essentially the challenge was to create 40 minutes of animation illustrating (speculating) how big cats may adapt to a planet which will inevitably change around them. They had to create “a look” or style resembling high production value, yet easy to execute since the time line for the project was only 3 months. The team constituted 8 animators/compositors so optimizing workflow became essential.Pre production kicked off by creating a miniaturized 3D world where the CG models resembled life-like carvings of animals and environments after which subtle camera movements were employed to navigate through these lifelike dioramas. Elizabeth was particularly fond of the wooden carved cats as it reminded her of the African arts & crafts you see at curios stalls in South Africa, where she grew up. After school she studied BA BK Information Design at the University of Pretoria. She worked a few years as a designer/animator in Johannesburg then decided to explore the world with her boyfriend (now husband Kendall Reid) starting in the UK. She resumed a freelance career in Motion Graphics Art Director for brands like Disney, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, NFL Network, USA Network, Universal Studios Cartoon AMC, Starz to name a few when they moved to Los Angeles. Fireworks were worse than everWhen the clock struck 00:00 on 1 January 2015 every animal owner knew that nobody listened to the pleas that all fireworks are illegal. Despite it being quiet around Christmas, Lydenburg sounded like a war zone on 31 December. Please lets come up with a plan so that shops that still sell fireworks are fined. Three shops in the CBD clearly had banners up that they were selling fireworks. Public participation and effective law enforcement is needed.

DIE grootskaalse ontwikkeling in en om ons dorp mag dalk vir mense tot 'n sekere mate tot voordeel wees. Maar vir plant-en dierelewe, is dit die verlies van hulle natuurlike tuiste. So is dit die geval van 'n baie skaars slangspesie, die Hoëveld Kousbanddlang (Elapsoidea sundervalli media). Hierdie is verseker een van die mooiste slange in ons omgewing. Tog is daar baie min bekend oor hierdie slang. Wat dit meer belangrik maak, is dat die kleur variasie, rooi en swart, net in Lydenburg voorkom! Die verspreidings gebied van E. s. media

is beperk, van Noord Kaap, Vrystaat, Noord Wes en Gauteng. Daar is wel ander kleure van dieselfde spesie wat in ander streke van Suid Afrika voorkom, maar ons is baie bevoorreg om hierdie uitsonderlike kleur slang net hier te kry. Die kleur van jong slange verskil van swart en wit, swart en liggeel, room en pink, asook room en donker bruin met n vuilwit pens. Ouer slange verkleur na donker grys totswart, wat dit moelik maak om die slang aan sy kleur uit te ken.Die hoëveld kousbandslang verkies grasvlakte, savanna en laaglandwoude, alles wat ons hier het.Die slang is klein, tot ongeveer een meter in lengte, is nagaktief en leef ondergronds. Termietneste is ’n voorkeur blyplek, en dis n slang wat selde byt, selfs al word dit hanteer. Dit is nie dodelik gevaarlik nie, en die byt veroorsaak pyn en swelling, naarheid en braking, maar geen gevalle van meer as dit, of enige sterftes is opgeteken nie. Geen teegif is nodig vir die behandeling nie. Hulle voorkeur voedsel sluit in : ander slange, akkedisse, paddas, knaagdiere en molle.Onlangs is een van hierdie uiters skaars slange in Lydenburg omgewing gevind.

Maar weereens het o n k u n d e e n o n g e v o e l i g h e i d veroorsaak dat ’n o n s k u l d i g e , weerlose dier moes boet met sy lewe, en die noodsaaklike inligtingivm hierdie unieke spesie is verlore !P u b l i e k w o r d dringend versoek om nie slange dood te maak nie, maar kundiges te skakel om slange te verwyder, en te hervestig.Neels 082 730 3047. 2016SO, 2016 het aangebreek. Ek hoop julle hou by julle voornemens. Desember 2015 was ’n wilde maand. Die slagting op ons paaie was so erg of erger as ooit. Baie van ons moes geliefdes weens siekte, ouderdom of ander oorsake aan die dood afstaan. Onverstaanbaar hoe Desember altyd met so baie sterftes en verdriet gepaard gaan.Hier in die dorp was dit wat klappers betref baie stil, behalwe vir oujaarsaand. Snaaks ook hoe bepaalde

groeperings die meeste geld die lug ingeblaas het. Hulle verstaan duidelik nie die effek daarvan op troeteldiere nie.Zuma het sy soveelste blaps begaan met sy minister van finansies. Dit het gelei tot ’n ongekende vlaag van mense wat op die bakkiesblad Facebook met ’n veldtog genaamd “Zuma must fall” begin het.Die droogte in sekere dele van ons land duur voort. Bid asseblief vir die boere en mense in distrikte waar water uiters skaars is. Ons het ook hier weer gesien hoe welwillend mense is wat veevoer oor duisende kilometers gratis vir gestrande boere aanry. Pragtig. Ons hier op Lydenburg kan nie kla nie. Met 236 mm oor Desember het ons die derde hoogste

reënval in 35 jaar vir die maand beleef, maar ten spyte daarvan is die rivier nog laag (agterstand) en mors Thaba Chweu baie water met lekkasies wat nie betyds of behoorlik herstel word nieMaar ek voel so in my gebeente dat 2016 ’n beter jaar gaan word. Dit begin sleg en kan net beter word.Op die motorfront sien ons uit na talle nuwe modelle en ons hoop die ekonomie en besigheid gaan verbeter. Geloof en hoop is wat ons het.Ek hoop julle almal se gesondheid hou, dat julle finansieel die mas sal opkom en dat ons almal se uitkyk bietjie meer positief sal wees. Werk hierdie jaar aan gesinsverhoudings en geestelike verdieping. En laat die rassisme ’n bietjie rus. Dit sal goeie gevolge hê.

OF ons nou met ons boude in die botter gaan val, hard gaan werk of skuins na die finansies moet kyk, 2016 sal voorwaar ’n jaar met uitdagings wees. En het ons nie almal maar lekker gekuier in 2016 se Feesseisoen nie... dit was voorwaar rustig. Aan diegene wat op vakansie was... hoop julle het dit geniet. Party het van stoel tot stoel gesit en geëet. Ek het so min gedoen dat ek moeg is daarvan. Ons kan uitsien na ‘n baie surrealistiese 2016. En Zuma is maar net een van die redes. Die studente wat

nou gaan swot sonder om ‘n sent te betaal. Ek het nie daardie voorreg gehad nie. En ek tel baie aggressie op in die land wat iewers gaan uitbars. Dinge gaan nog gebeur. (Ons het geween van die lag met hierdie storie... want dit het met familievriende gebeur... en dit is steeds na jare ’n lekker storie). Die storie loop so... ’n tronkbewaarder by Pretoria Sentraal het die ‘voorreg’ of ‘dodelike taak’ (spreekwoordelik) gehad om saam met die gevangenis te stap. Die laaste myl, die doodsgang... toe die doodstraf nog in werking was. Hy het maar ewe gedwee altyd hulle vergesel en nie ’n woord gerep nie. Op ’n dag het hy besluit om sy stilswye te verbreek. Hy het ge-oe en ge-aa oor sy besluit... oor wat ’n gepaste laaste woord sal wees. Dus ek skop Hoorhierso af hierdie jaar met hierdie woorde... en die tronkbewaarder se gevleulde woorde aan die man wie sy doodstraf letterlik tegemoed moet stap, veral as die seesand onder jou voete was.

ASA METALS upgrade of the road d4169 – Ga-Maroga from gravel to asphalt.The upgrade of the Maroga D4169 gravel road project was initiated in 2011 as a community project as part of ASA Metals social responsibility programme. The total distance of the road to be upgraded was 2 kilometres.By the end of 2014 a budget was set aside for the 2km to be

thupgraded and tenders closed on the 10 of December 2014.The original tender programme as accepted by ASA indicated a Time of Completion of the project of 103 working

days or 142 calendar days which equated to a project Completion Date of 23 July 2015.Even with lost time of; 4 working days (6 calendar days) due to one disgruntled member of the community locking the Contractor in the yard; 5 working days for rainfall; and Loss of Production, which is difficult to equate, due to illegal services that needed to be relocated either deeper or had to be re-routed, the actual Time for

stCompletion was the 21 of July 2015, two days ahead of schedule.Due to the challenging economic climate prevailing in the Chrome industry in general and at ASA in particular in the fourth quarter of 2014, the Project team was under severe pressure to ensure a more economical design without loss of durability and overall quality. Cost savings had to be implemented as far as possible.Batsumi Consulting Engineers were tasked with the overall design, specification and the day to day technical

management of the project. They were greatly assisted by Letaba Laboratories in quality control and final mix design of the layer works.Special thanks to the ASA Community L i a i s o n D e p a r t m e n t , t h e H R Department, the Community Liaison Officer and of course the Local community and Tribal structures for their assistance in resolving issues with minimum disruption to the project. On the idea that the local community should benefit from the project not only through the direct benefit of a new road but also through skills development and direct financial gain, the project trained 30 people in stone pitching and gabion construct ion. In addit ion local entrepreneurs were afforded the opportunity to offer their services. Local lodges, shops and plant hire businesses were also used. Approximately 15% of the project value was spent in the community. Thanks to the project team for their dedication to delivering a quality product in time, on budget and delivering the required community upliftment. BRBF Construction as the contractor, BCE Batsumi Consulting Engineers as Project Engineers, Letaba Lab as Road Laboratory, ASA Metals as Funding agent and RAL (Road Agency Limpopo) as final recipient.

EXPERTS are predicting a surge in car sales in 2016 amid a raft of new models to choose from.Here are some of the most important arrivals expected in 2016.Audi: Wraps will come off the next A5 in 2016, along with an open Spyder version of the rorty R8. The SQ7 denotes the new uprated version of the brand's biggest off-roader. A chunky new A2 entry-level SUV is also planned. The remodelled flagship A8 limousine is pencilled in for late in the year.BMW: Not to be outdone, the Munich maker is breathing on the M2 to extract 275kW. The rampaging rear-wheel-drive sportster is due in April. Plug-in hybrid

versions of the 2 Series, evergreen 3 Series and the range-topping 7 Series are also in the pipeline.Citroen. They have promised to release figures after they have had time to study them. WITH the release of results for public and private higher education institutions, many students will have to address the disappointing reality that they did not do as well as hoped. For some, this will be their first real test as an adult. Although it is too late to change what has happened, an honest assessment of what went wrong and taking appropriate action can be the start of great new things,” she says.Coughlan says after honest introspection, students may realise that they didn't take their studies seriously enough, or, as often happens, they may have to face the fact that there has been a mismatch between their expectations and aspirations and the actual opportunities.“Sometimes a student would've chosen a course in line with someone else's dream or tackled something out of obligation rather than inspiration.
