Our Parish Mission — Nuestra Senora de La Luz(Our Lady of the Light) is a community that comes together to model Jesus to all peoples by addressing physical concerns and spiritual matters, and to do as Jesus did, giving everything to bring people into a closer relationship with God, in celebration. 13 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A READINGS: (2 Kings 4: 8-11, 14-16): Reward of following and trusting in the Lord.(Rom. 6: 3-4, 8-11): Dying with Christ in Baptism: We were baptized in the death of Christ, so that we too might live a new life. (Matt. 10: 37-42): To love God above anything is the highest level of trust. Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me. Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophets reward. Theme: Renouncing self to follow Christ (Prioritizing God). In economics, we have the Scale of Preference; the first thing in the scale of preference is the most needed item. In this life, what is first in our Scale of Preference? A. Food? B. Money? C. House? D. God? E. Children/Parents/ Family? Today, we heard Jesus telling us not to let anything or anyone (even those who are closest to us, even our lives) be more important than He is. He does not make this request for His own glorification. He is not looking for worldly glory. His life was a life of poverty and simplicity. He has also the glory he needs from God (i.e. Son of God). He wants to set us free from anxiety because any human being/ human made thing can fail us any moment. Our life can never be satisfied until we posses him (Jesus). As Saint Augustine would say, though hast made us for thyself O Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in thee”. Moreover, in Matthew 10:37-42, Jesus advises us to love God above anything that may thwart our relationship with him; I am the Vine, you are the branches, cut off from me you can do nothing (John 15:5). If we want to be saved, we must try to bring to the Lord Jesus Christ your loved friends, brothers, sisters, wives and husbands, and then you will be in a better position to enjoy the peace of mind. Our priority shows where our love/generosity and energy goes: - when God is our priority it manifests in our lives; respect for him, love for him, our relationship with others, our approach to natural phenomenon (like sickness, trials, and tribulations of life). Etc. May the Lord Jesus Christ grant us the grace to choose/price/ prioritize him above everything else. Jesus loves you, and so do I. - Rev. Marcel Okonkwo.
