Dear St. James Cathedral Family,

In the dictionary the word serve means to render assistance;

be of use; help. In today’s Gospel, Jesus models for us how

to serve with compassion and with a genuine concern towards

others in dire need. We see that, in the way in which Jesus,

with a sense of urgency, leaves the crowds behind to assist

the daughter of a synagogue official who was very sick. He

was called and without hesitation agrees to follow Jairus

to his home to tend to the dying child. On His way a woman

filled with faith touches Jesus garments, hoping to be totally

cured. The faith of that woman was so great that she allowed

Jesus to serve her, by simply touching His clothes. There’s

no limit to Christ’s generosity on behalf of those who seek

Him. Serving her did not stop Jesus from honoring His

commitment, and desire to serve the dying young girl.

Even though the girl’s family and neighbors thought it

was too late for Jesus to assist the already dead child, Jesus

reveals the power of His healing love.

Our nation celebrates this week an important holiday. On

July 4, 1776 the United States Declaration of Independence

was released. Approved by vote of the Continental Congress

two days before it went public, this document declared

that the former 13 colonies were now the United States of

America, severing all ties with Great Britain. On July 4th, 1776

our beloved country was born, as it declared its independence

from Great Britain. The Liberty Bell was one of the bells

that rung that day, announcing the birth of a new country!

Our Founding Fathers conceived this new country to become

“One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice

for all.” The greatness of these United States of America is

found in the heart of the people—that is committed to

serve! May we never lose sight of the many blessings we

have received as a country, that never walks away from

helping and caring for others, as Christ has taught us and

our founding Fathers envisioned! Happy and Blessed 4th of

July!

In Christ,

Very Reverend Miguel A. González

Estimada Familia de la Catedral de Santiago Apóstol,

En el diccionario, la palabra servir significa prestar ayuda;

Servirle a

Unidos de América se encuentra en el corazón de la gente;

Reverendísimo Miguel A. González

“…as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality.” 2 Corinthians 8:14 We are responsible not only for our own lives, but for the lives of those around us. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of our Catholic faith. We are the “Body of Christ”. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation.
