GUEST SPEAKER 6th JUNE - REPORT
Michael Lapiña
"GVE to DISTRICT 3820 - HEAD, GUTS AND HEART"
Michael was recently the leader of a D9800 outgoing Group Vocational Exchange ['GVE'] to District 3820 inthe Philippines which involved an eclectic team of four young professionals.
Michael broke the story into three parts; Head - all about planning and preparation of the team, Guts - allabout the reaction to a somewhat underprepared host, and Heart - all about the quite moving examples ofRotary service projects in the Philippines.
The advertising, screening, selection and training of the outgoing team took several months. They wereintroduced to Rotary and briefed on the Learn, Train, Share model for the exchange and kitted out in theiruniforms, set off on February 17th.
Upon arrival, Michael had an uneasy feeling in his Guts - their hosts had not really grasped the VocationalExchange concept and instead followed the old GSE model focussing almost entirely on the cultural andsocial aspects which they did brilliantly. The team was treated like rock stars and hosted by 22 clubs in 28days! Michael found himself reworking the program to incorporate the vocational element, but it was allvery last minute. Michael contrasted the program against the refined program created by Alan Seale for theincoming GVE team from the Philippines, which should provide a useful guide for District 3820 to modelfuture GVE opportunities.
Turning to the Heart, Michael described some of the many projects the team visited and highlighted whatcan be learned in exchanges like this in both identifying service opportunities for clubs like Central Melbourne but also in personal andprofessional development for team members. He showcased programs to prevent hearing loss amongst the young, the establishment of adialysis unit that was supported with Rotary Foundation Global Grant funds, and a dental health scheme. Michael sees plenty of opportunitiesfor us to make a difference in that part of the world through Rotary.

LET’S KICK-START ROTARY 2017-18
“I am keen to gain your views rather than do a presentation to the Club. I see it as very important that we know what you would like tocreate. By now, most of you would know of the importance of "The One Page Plan". That's a term that our Club Director Strategy, Warwick Cavell,has been instilling in us over recent times and that is what we will end up with post our Sunday gathering. In essence, our One Page Plan will be developed via your contributions to the following discussion points: 1. Where do we want to be as a Club and why? 2. What are the key challenges that we will need to address, now, in order to achieve what we want in question 1? 3. How are we going to address those challenges....by developing high level action plans? Kick Start 2018 will be held:
At the Montague Continuing Education Centre, 100 Montague St South MelbourneOn Sunday 18 June 2017Between 9.00am and 12.30pm

Meeting Closed;
The Swindle was closed off last week but President Justine didn't let the opportunity to 'cash up' pass. The bucket was passed around, andGeorge will be pleased to learn that no one was asked to run a Sergeant's Session - notwithstanding Gerard was present having just returnedfrom Japan and was probably fully loaded with new jokes.
