PFEW 2014

The 2014 season of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) wrapped up the first full week of August. PFEW, for those who don't know, is "business camp" for high school students and has been happening every summer for the last 36 years. At PFEW the students not only learn valuable business skills such as marketing and finance but life lessons as well. This year over 2,100 students graduated from the program. Be sure to read more in next month's edition about how you can get involved in this wonderful program.

You are cordially invited to attend an event and enjoy “A Night at the Museum” with the Board of Directors of the Venango Museum. This is a fundraiser that will be held at the Museum (270 Seneca Street, Oil City) on October 11, 2014. Cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 PM and dinner will follow at 6:30 PM. The evening will feature a live auction conducted by veteran auctioneer, Bill Bellis, entertainment by pianist Bob English and door prizes. We would be delighted if you were able to join us for what promises to be an enjoyable evening. Tickets are $50.00 per person and can be purchased at the Museum. Please call Betsy Kellner 814-676-2007 for tickets or if you have any questions.

Northwest Commission Energy Expo

The Commission is pleased to announce that the previously mentioned Energy Expo has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2014. This FREE event will be held at the Cross Creek Resort near Titusville, PA and will run from 9 am - 3 pm. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning courtesy of National Fuel, and Premier Power Solutions will be covering a full lunch for all attendees.

There will be multiple sessions and breakout groups along with exhibitor tables and ample networking opportunities. The event will cover multiple topics of concern for regional businesses including energy purchasing, rebate programs, conservation strategies, lighting essentials, CNG conversions/fleets, funding opportunities and best practices.

There is still vendor space available for businesses offering energy-related products and services. Please reach out to Bill Rupert at [email protected] or 814-677-4800 x122 to register for this event.

Spotlight on Timber Lake Lodge From homemade lump crabcakes, U.S.D.A. Choice steaks, and healthy salads, to lobster ravioli, apple-pecan-cranberry stuffed chicken, and roasted duck a l’orange, the Timber Lake Lodge has something for every-one. The Timber Lake Lodge is owned by Christy and Ken Humanic, and is located at 4286 State Route 8 in Tittusville, at the former Windy Hills Farm. Not only is this unique business a restaurant, but it is also a nightclub and a banquet & conference center.

The Humanics originally bought the property where the Timber Lake Lodge is located to expand their manufacturing company that they started in Pittsburgh—E & K Equipment. They then decided to build a facility on the property to offer local residents great food and quality entertainment. Because the property used to be a barn, the owners decided to maintain some of the original features, while also adding design from various historical landmarks from the area and around the US.

Timber Lake Lodge offers a delicious, healthy menu, as well as a full stocked bar and exciting entertain-ment, in which they host different entertainers and have a 25’ x 50’ hardwood dance floor. The business can be used as a venue for weddings, receptions, class reunions, fundraisers, conferences, banquets, and meetings, and has a table seating capacity of 300.

The Humanics describe the Timber Lake Lodge as a great place to unwind with your friends and family, and one thing they love most about working in Venango County is the friendly, helpful and down-to-earth people. As far as advice to other business owners, they told us, “Don’t give up. This is a wonderful area in which to do business and there is plenty for everyone. Find your special niche; something that makes you happy, then perfect it. If you love what you do, it shows and you will succeed!”

The Chamber is so thankful to have such great members, and we love to see those like the Timber Lake Lodge that are passionate about Venango County and the people living here. The Humanics have told us that their goal is to constantly adapt, improve and listen to the suggestions of their customers. To learn more about their business or to find a menu and entertainment schedule, visit their website at www.timberlake.bz.

Spotlight on Laurel Eye Clinic

Whether a complex surgery is needed, or just a routine check-up, the Laurel Eye Clinic is a full service eye care clinic where doctors assist patients for all types of needs. The Laurel Eye Clinic was founded in 1973 by Dr. Steven Greenburg, MD, in Brookville, Pennsylvania. The Seneca office, located on Route 257, was built in 1981 to serve Seneca and its surrounding communities, and has now grown to 10 clinics throughout western and central Pennsylvania.

The Laurel Eye Clinic offers routine family eye care with a full optical boutique, as well as complex care such as glaucoma management and treatment, cataract surgery, retina procedures and LASIK. Many may not know, though, that the Laurel Eye Clinic now has a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon on staff that not only does facial work, but full body plastics. These procedures include breast augmentations, tummy tucks, face lifts, laser hair removal and much more. As part of their mission says, the business will continue to offer the most advanced technology available. Recently, they have adopted the Bladeless LASIK Technology—the latest laser technology for LASIK Eye Surgery.

When asked what the Laurel Eye Clinic likes most about working in Venango County, they told us that they feel very fortunate to have been able to serve so many great people from Venango County for over 30 years. “It’s the people that make this area so special,” they said.

It is obvious that the Laurel Eye Clinic feels very passionate about the Venango County area. They feel strongly about promoting and encouraging businesses to move into our region, and it is our goal as a Chamber to do the same. You can find them online by visiting their website at www.laureleye.com, liking them on Facebook, or following them on Twitter. Please join us in welcoming the Laurel Eye Clinic as a member to the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce!

Deer Creek Winery Celebrates 5th Anniversary

In the fall of 2009, Deer Creek Winery opened its doors and offered the public an authentic PA raspberry wine, grown from their own raspberry vineyard located behind the tasting room and gift shop. In fond remem-brance of this benchmark, and now with over 18 varietals, each year Deer Creek Winery holds Fall Fest, a gathering that always draws a crowd and features area vendors and live entertainment. 2014 marks

Deer Creek’s 5th year anniversary so they are pulling out all the stops to make this notable birthday in September bigger and better than ever.

Fall Fest takes place this year Sept 13th from 12-8pm and Sept 14th from 12-5pm. The Brooks will be holding a church service on the property at 3333 Soap Fat Rd prior to activities. Public is welcome, services begin at 9am and are led by Cindy Stewart. The vendor roster for this year’s Fall Fest continues to grow. Vendors include Brimfield Bread Oven featuring hand-made, wood-fired pizzas, pretzels, and breads, jewelry by local artist Marsha Maddy of “Felix the Cat”, and many other interesting artisans. Live music throughout the weekend: Saturday 1-4pm by “Clurican”, a Celtic band, 5-8pm by “Keep Off the Grass” (Bluegrass), and Sunday 2-5pm by “Junction PA” playing classic hits. DCW is also offering door prizes, rustic wagon rides, “Bottle Your Own Wine”, a Sangria bar, a store-wide sale, and much, much more!

The Brooks family, owners of the winery, hope this event will draw tourism to the area and invite locals and campers alike to ‘Rediscover Deer Creek’; a lot has changed in the past 5 years! What began as a small gift shop and tasting room with a single wine offering has expanded to include a production warehouse, café and coffee bar, Vino’s Den events venue, line of specialty oils & vinegars, and 5 regional retail locations. Friends and family are encouraged to enjoy western Pennsyl-vania’s crisp autumn air and refreshing wine at Deer Creek Winery’s annual Fall Fest.

Launch Permits Required

Just a little friendly reminder for our paddlers to obtain Launch Permits. As summer winds down, paddlers planning kayaking and canoeing trips are reminded that’s a launch permit or a boat registration is required to use access areas owned by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and at state park and state forest access areas operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

PFBC launch permits cost $10.00 for one year and $18.00 for 2 years. Users can also choose to register their unpowered boat for $18. Boat Registration are issued for 2-year periods and expires on march of the second year.

PFBC launch permits and boat registration are also valid in state parks and sate forests. Paddlers using PFBC access area without valid launch permits or boat registration are subject to a $75 fine .

In addition to the registration requirement, important life-saving equipment is required to be carried on non-powered crafts. Stop by ALLEGHENY NOTARY SERVICE, LLC at 515 East Second Street in Oil City (across from Rite Aid)

or call 814-677-6683 to register your non-powered boat.

Too Many Americans Lack Adequate Life Insurance Each September, Life Happens coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month. This industry-wide campaign is aimed at encouraging all Americans to take stock of their life insurance needs.

The following statistics, taken from a variety of sources, help to show why this encouragement is necessary:

30% of U.S. households have no life insurance whatsoever. 33% of Americans say they don’t have enough life insurance. Many don’t realize that they don’t have enough. A child born in 2013 will cost a middle-income

American family an average of $245,340 until he or she reaches the age of 18, and this does not include college funding.

Over 63% say they can’t afford life insurance. Yet, people with no life insurance overestimate the cost by three times the actual expense. A healthy 23-year-old man, for example, can buy a 20-year term policy with a death benefit of $250,000 for about $13 a month.

One-third of people haven’t bought life insurance because they’re unsure of how much or what type to buy.

Procrastination accounts for much of the deficit, but clearly, lack of familiarity and even confusion on the part of the insurance-buying consumer is also to blame. This lack of familiarity can easily be overcome by sitting down with a local life insurance agent, licensed to ensure current knowledge of what can be a rather complex field. One great approach would be to start discussion with the agent who handles your home and auto protection. It is not uncommon for these agents to offer discounts on home and auto policies for the addition of a life insurance product.

Your family depends on you. This September, please show them how much you care by sitting down with a life insurance agent to get the facts about this important protection.

Caldwell Signage Solutions Caldwell Printing Services is proud to announce a new branding initiative to better promote all of the services we offer. Since 1996, Caldwell Printing has been growing to meet the needs of our customers.

In 1997, we began offering clothing and promotional products lines. Trophies, name plates, and awards followed in 1999. In 2008, we added a complete line of full color printing. In 2010, at the request of our customers, we started making yard signs and banners which was the beginning of our expansion into vinyl graphics. Now, our vinyl products line has grown to include vehicle graphics and vinyl signage. In the spring of 2012, Matt Caldwell earned a Vehicle Wrap Certification. We have continued to add technology and equipment which has allowed us to design and install several new types of signage including carved, lit, and architectural signage, ADA and interior signage, and form and channel letters. All of these additional services have lead to the need for a clear division between the printing and sign portions of the business.

Therefore, we are proud to announce that Caldwell Signage Solutions will be the new brand for our full line sign shop. The showroom, located at 206 Seneca Street, has samples of all of the lines and products we offer. As a certified, licensed, and fully insured division, Caldwell Signage Solutions provides the same quality, customer service, and expertise Caldwell Printing Services has been providing our customers for 18 years.

Trail Town Business & Grant Opportunities Now Available

The communities of Oil City, Titusville, Emlenton and Foxburg have recently been named official Trail Towns by The Trail Town Program®, which developed Trail Towns along the Great Allegheny Passage and is now expanding its services to parts of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail. Businesses in these Trail Towns now have several opportunities to consider:

Business Sign Grant: a reimbursable, matching 50/50 grant not to exceed $750 or 50% of eligible expenses, whichever is less. Your business must be located in a Trail Town Program listed Trail Town, and provide goods & services to trail users (i.e. restaurants, lodging, shops, and trail-related services). The sign must follow the Trail Town Business Sign Design Guide. Business Sign Grants are available through September 30, 2014.

Business Bike Rack Grant: enables businesses in Trail Towns to purchase a bike rack for $75.00. The bike rack is a simple post & ring design that can hold 1-2 bikes. Bike Rack Grants are available through November 15, 2014.

Trail Town Certified Business Network: a free and inclusive organization for all businesses that serve trail users. Connect with other trail-related businesses for idea sharing, networking and learning events.

If you are applying for a Business Sign Grant or Bike Rack Grant, be sure to check with your municipality on any restrictions before ordering or installing these items. To learn more about these Trail Town opportunities, visit http://www.trailtowns.org/initiatives.aspx or contact William Prince, Trail Town Program Manager at (724)216-9160, ext. 318.

Sharrows can now be found on Seneca and Elm Streets

to mark a portion of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail through

downtown Oil City. The sharrows serve as a reminder

to both motorists and bicyclists to share the road.

"Haaaave You Met Ted?": an Exercise in Networking by Kurtis Bell

“Haaaave you met Ted?” For some of you, this may trigger a smile or chuckle as you think back to Barney Stinson winging for his buddy Ted Mosby. If you’re not familiar, the game is an attempt to set Ted up with single women. Barney acts as Ted’s wingman and opens the door to conversation by tapping a woman on the shoulder and asking, “Haaaave you met Ted?”. Recently, I made a connection between How I Met Your Mother and networking.

In networking, we often have opportunities to wing for someone. For instance, you may have a connection that could really benefit from joining the conversation at a mixer. Breaking in to a group’s conversation may be one of the most challenging aspects of business mixers, but can be made immensely simple by someone pulling you in for a “Haaaave you met Ted?” moment. The same could be done if you know someone who is just a little shy and hesitant about approaching individuals to strike up a conversation.

So, next time you're at a networking event, pull in a friend and introduce them to the group. You never know what kind of great connection you could facilitate by simply saying "haaaaave you met Ted?"

Get the word out! Did you read an article that you loved, or learn about a member that you didn’t know about? Share it with us! Tell us directly, or share it on social media, and remember to always use #VenangoWorks!

Recycle! After you’ve read it yourself, shared it with others, and set it out for a month or so, make sure to recycle your newsletter instead of tossing it in the garbage can. There are hundreds of benefits to recycling, and we encourage you to recycle whenever possible! If you aren’t able to take your recycling to a reciprocal, you can bring your newsletter to the Chamber and we’ll gladly recycle it for you.

So what are you going to do with YOUR newsletter? These are just a few of many ways that you can reuse and further your monthly newsletter from the Chamber. If you have any other ideas, we’d love for you to share them with us. Call us at (814) 676-8521 or send us an email at [email protected].
