New Efforts Aim To Convince You: Texting “Can Wait” As more and more Ohioans take steps to avoid and discourage distracted driving, communications leader AT&T has announced
that their no-texting-while-driving campaign, It Can Wait, is being expanded in 2013. This news comes just as Ohio’s statewide
ban on texting while driving moves from its education and warning phase into the fully-active citation phase on March 1.
AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign began in 2009 but was re-invigorated in 2012 with a fresh commitment of tens of millions of dol-
lars for the cause, and a dedicated ItCanWait.com website encouraging drivers to pledge that they would not text while behind the
wheel. The website was launched in August 2012, and AT&T says more than 1.2 million pledges have already been made.
A key component of the 2012 It Can Wait campaign was AT&T’s unique distracted driving sim-
ulator, which was pressed into use around the country. Utilizing a real automobile, the partici-
pant’s own phone, and specialized goggles and screens to project a virtual roadway, the AT&T
simulator allowed thousands of people to see first-hand how vulnerable they were to deadly dan-
ger when they tried to text while driving. AT&T brought the It Can Wait simulator to high
schools in the Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Youngstown areas in 2012 and the company is
finalizing plans to bring this experience to more Ohioans, beginning this month.
Other plans for It Can Wait in 2013 include working with smartphone manufacturers to pre-load
no-texting-while-driving technologies into handsets. The first of these is already available: the
Pantech Discover, an affordable new smartphone model that just came out last month, comes
with the free AT&T DriveMode app already installed. Available for Android and BlackBerry
devices, DriveMode functions similarly to an e-mail out-of-office alert, telling those who send a text to a driver that the recipient
will respond as soon as they’re no longer behind the wheel.
“Our goal is simple – we want to change behavior and save lives,” said AT&T Senior Executive Vice President and Global Mar-
keting Officer Cathy Coughlin. “That’s why we’re putting additional resources behind this effort and why we’re inviting everyone
to join us in this cause. Working together, we can make a difference.”
Ohio’s statewide ban on texting while driving went into effect in August 2012, and included the six-month education period dur-
ing which warnings would be issued instead of citations.
