Genesis 15:1-6Gods Covenant with Abram15 After these things the word ofthe LORD came to Abram in avision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I amyour shield; your reward shall be verygreat. 2 But Abram said, OLord GOD, what will you give me, for Icontinue childless, and the heir of myhouse is Eliezer of Damascus?[a] 3 AndAbram said, You have given me nooffspring, and so a slave born in myhouse is to be my heir. 4 But the wordof the LORD came to him, This manshall not be your heir; no one but yourvery own issue shall be your heir. 5 Hebrought him outside and said, Looktoward heaven and count the stars, ifyou are able to count them. Then hesaid to him, So shall your descendantsbe. 6 And he believed the LORD; andtheLORD[b] reckoned it to him asrighteousness. 9. 1 John 4:16-2116 So we have known and believe thelove that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide inGod, and God abides in them. 17 Lovehas been perfected among us in this:that we may have boldness on the dayof judgment, because as he is, so are wein this world.18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fearhas to do with punishment, and whoeverfears has not reached perfection inlove. 19 We love[a]because he first lovedus. 20 Those who say, I love God, andhate their brothers or sisters,[b] are liars;for those who do not love a brother orsister[c] whom they have seen, cannotlove God whom they have notseen. 21 The commandment we havefrom him is this: those who love Godmust love their brothers andsisters[d] also. 10. Luke 16:19-31The Rich Man and Lazarus19 There was a rich man who was dressedin purple and fine linen and who feastedsumptuously every day. 20 And at his gatelay a poor man named Lazarus, coveredwith sores, 21 who longed to satisfy hishunger with what fell from the rich manstable; even the dogs would come and lickhis sores. 22 The poor man died and wascarried away by the angels to be withAbraham.[a] The rich man also died and wasburied. 23 In Hades, where he was beingtormented, he looked up and saw Abrahamfar away with Lazarus by his side.[b] 24 Hecalled out, Father Abraham, have mercy onme, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of hisfinger in water and cool my tongue; for Iam in agony in these flames. 25 ButAbraham said, Child, remember thatduring your lifetime you received yourgood things, and Lazarus in like mannerevil things; but now he is comfortedhere, and you are in agony. 26 Besides allthis, between you and us a great chasm hasbeen fixed, so that those who might want topass from here to you cannot do so, and noone can cross from there to us.27 Hesaid, Then, father, I beg you to send him tomy fathers house 28 for I have fivebrothersthat he may warn them, so thatthey will not also come into this place oftorment. 29 Abraham replied, They haveMoses and the prophets; they should listento them. 30 He said, No, father Abraham;but if someone goes to them from thedead, they will repent. 31 He said to him, Ifthey do not listen to Moses and theprophets, neither will they be convincedeven if someone rises from the dead. 11. Psalm 33:12-2212 Happy is the nation whose God isthe LORD,the people whom he has chosen as hisheritage.13 The LORD looks down from heaven;he sees all humankind.14 From where he sits enthroned hewatchesall the inhabitants of the earth15 he who fashions the hearts of them all,and observes all their deeds.16 A king is not saved by his great army;a warrior is not delivered by his greatstrength.17 The war horse is a vain hope forvictory, and by its great might it cannot save.18 Truly the eye of the LORD is on thosewho fear him,on those who hope in his steadfastlove,19 to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.20 Our soul waits for the LORD;he is our help and shield.21 Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, beupon us,even as we hope in you. 12. FIRST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITYGenesis 15:161 John 4:1621Luke 16:1931Faith Trusts in Christ for Life EternalWhen the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by the angels to Abrahams bosom. For hewas truly Abrahams seed. Like Abraham, he believed in the Lord, and the Lord countedit to him as righteousness (Gen. 15:6). The name Lazarus means God is my help. Theunnamed rich man, on the other hand, did not love and trust in God. For he evidently caredlittle for the beggar at his gate. And he who does not love his brother whom he has seencannot love God whom he has not seen (1 John 4:20). He who loved and trusted inpossessions and prestige died and was in torments in Hades (Luke 16:1931). Repentanceand faith are worked only through Moses and the prophetsthat is, the Word of God, for itpoints us to Christ. Only through His death and resurrection are we brought the comfort oflife everlasting. 13. Prov. 9:1-10; Eph. 2:13-22; 1 John 3:13-18;Luke 14:15-24; Psalm 34:12-22Proverbs 9:1-10Wisdoms Feast9 Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars.2 She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixedher wine, she has also set her table.3 She has sent out her servant-girls, she callsfrom the highest places in the town,4 You that are simple, turn in here!To those without sense she says,5 Come, eat of my breadand drink of the wine I have mixed.6 Lay aside immaturity,[a] and live, and walk in the way of insight.General Maxims7 Whoever corrects a scoffer wins abuse;whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt.8 A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you;the wise, when rebuked, will love you.9 Give instruction[b] to the wise, and they willbecome wiser still;teach the righteous and they will gain in learning.10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning ofwisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.Ephesians 2:13-2213 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were faroff have been brought near by the blood of Christ.14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made bothgroups into one and has broken down the dividingwall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He hasabolished the law with its commandments andordinances, that he might create in himself one newhumanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16and might reconcile both groups to God in onebody[a] through the cross, thus putting to death thatproclaimed peace to you who were far off and peaceto those who were near; 18 for through him both ofus have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 Sothen you are no longer strangers and aliens, but youare citizens with the saints and also members of thehousehold of God,20 built upon the foundation ofthe apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himselfas the cornerstone.[c] 21 In him the whole structureis joined together and grows into a holy temple inthe Lord; 22 in whom you also are built togetherspiritually[d] into a dwelling place for God.1 John 3:13-1813 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters,[a] thatthe world hates you.14 We know that we havepassed from death to life because we love oneanother. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15All who hate a brother or sister[b] aremurderers, and you know that murderers do nothave eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know loveby this, that he laid down his life for usand weought to lay down our lives for one another. 17How does Gods love abide in anyone who has theworlds goods and sees a brother or sister[c] in needand yet refuses help?18 Little children, let us love, not in word orspeech, but in truth and action.Luke 14:15-24The Parable of the Great Dinner15 One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said tohim, Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in thekingdom of God! 16 Then Jesus[a] said tohim, Someone gave a great dinner and invitedmany. 17 At the time for the dinner he sent his slaveto say to those who had been invited, Come; foreverything is ready now. 18 But they all alikebegan to make excuses. The first said to him, Ihave bought a piece of land, and I must go out andsee it; please accept my regrets. 19 Another said, Ihave bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going totry them out; please accept my regrets. 20 Anothercannot come. 21 So the slave returned and reportedthis to his master. Then the owner of the housebecame angry and said to his slave, Go out at onceinto the streets and lanes of the town and bring inthe poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. 22And the slave said, Sir, what you ordered has beendone, and there is still room. 23 Then the mastersaid to the slave, Go out into the roads andlanes, and compel people to come in, so that myhouse may be filled. 24 For I tell you,[b] none ofthose who were invited will taste my dinner.Psalm 34:12-2212 Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.14 Depart from evil, and do good;seek peace, and pursue it.15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers,to cut off the remembrance of them from theearth.17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORDhears, and rescues them from all their troubles.18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD rescues them from them all.20 He keeps all their bones;not one of them will be broken.21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will becondemned.22 The LORD redeems the life of his servants;none of those who take refuge in him will becondemned.
