Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018
1305 Royal Avenue Simi Valley, CA 93065 Phone: 805 526-1732
Lent is a season to be open and to receive. God is waiting to offer us a great gift this Lent: the gift of a relationship with God! But sometimes, we get caught up in our fear and our guilt and we focus on ourselves and our sin. Lent isn’t really about us! Lent gives us a chance to look really closely at our lives and think about what we might want to change in it. How can we be better persons? But, what if we change the focus from ourselves, to God’s love? Then, we come into the amazing awareness that even though we are sinners, we are loved incredibly by God. That is when we become people who are drawn back to that love and to our God. God is inviting us into a close and loving relationship with Him.

The Church grants a plenary indulgence to a member of the faithful who practices the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross.
What is an Indulgence?
"An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins." The Church does this not just to aid Christians, "but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity" (CCC 1478).

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Scrutinies and Presentation of The Creed
On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent the Church celebrates the “Scrutinies” for the Elect (the unbaptized preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil). To “scrutinize” means to take a long and careful look at the ways we need to be healed and strengthened. In the Scrutinies, the Elect and the Community both acknowledge the power of evil that hinders them from following Christ, and the Elect give public witness to their ongoing conversion. Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it is about an all-loving, merciful God who offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an opportunity to change. It is a continual turning away from the inauthentic self to the authentic self. The First Scrutiny, celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of Lent, asks us to reflect on the 9 AM Cycle A Readings and consider the following questions. In what way have you experienced being an outcast? Who have you made an outcast and why? What are the deep thirsts of Our World; Our society; Our Communities? What are my own deep thirsts? These are just a few of the questions the Elect have reflected on when they kneel before the altar today. Let us continue to pray for the Elect and Candidates as they journey towards Full Initiation into our Catholic Church.
Adult Faith Formation Do you want to have a faith-filled discussion with other Catholics about the things that matter in life? Do you want to learn more about your Catholic Faith, but aren’t sure where to start? Do you have questions, but don’t know where to get the answers? Do you want to lead a more fulfilling prayer life, but don’t quite know how to begin? Do you desire to live a life of discipleship, but don’t know exactly what that means? Then come and join us for Adult Faith Formation EVERY Wednesday evening from 7:30 – 9:00 pm in Room 9 of the School. Come as you are, and when you can, all are welcome. This is on-going adult Catechesis; no need to register or sign-up, there is no cost, and you do not have to attend every session. For more information call the Office of Faith Formation at 526-5513.

Establishing boundaries Helping children understand that they have the right to establish boundaries if anyone tries to hurt them or touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable is an important, but sometimes difficult, task. Establishing boundaries around touch is integral to keeping kids safe. Having regular, open conversations about safety is one of the best ways to help keep kids safe. Remind children that their bodies are their own, encourage them to talk about their concerns and listen respectfully when they do. For more information from kidsmartz.org visit, http://www.kidsmartz.org/~/media/KidSmartz/ResourceDocuments/KidSmartz_Setting_Physical_Boundaries.pdf.
