Using the contour lines from the 3D model, cut eight layers
of squares and frames from two types of material (e.g.
acrylic and plywood).
For each layer of contour lines, take the resulting squares from
the first material and place them in the frame of the second
material.
Stack the eight assembled layers to see the full effect of the twist
and mesh.

twist.and.meshStarting with a MESH-like material that was chosen for its PERMEABILITY, components
and assemblies were constructed to test and discover aspects of the mesh’s performance. Using the physical mesh, the cross-structure and grid of the material prevented any tight revolving, twisting or circular assemblies. Hmmm. Moving into
digital experiments, the rigidity from the mesh structure was removed and the limits of TWISTING were explored further.
Then... that’s when it happened.
An epiphany happened (AKA in came Grasshopper) and the idea ofCREATING A MESH using twisted components was born. Thank you grids, sliders,
attractor points, and the like.Welcome everybody… the TWIST AND MESH.

The Sorrento Steps
The Sorrento Peninsula is located in southern Italy and consists mainly of the Lattari Mountains.
Known for its steep cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula will
be the location of the Sorrento Steps. A tiered platform of stacked cylinders will
be placed at the base of these cliffs to create a sloping path down to sea level. This will allow for increased
interaction with the water as it goes through high and low tides and varying water levels.
Low tides see a change of approximately 0.2 m,
while the highest of tides can change the water level of up to
2.0 m.

wire anchors assembly into
side of cliff
Italy has recorded 516 bird species, and is an important route for trans-Saharan bird
migrants because it is a natural bridge connecting continental Europe to Africa across the Mediterranean. Migratory birds such as the Honey Buzzard, Black Kite, Marsh Harrier, and Kestrel Hobby Bosphorus leave at Cap Bon in
Tunisia and enter Europe via the Aeolian I and slands and the Straits of Messina to Calabria.
Most of these birds breed in central and northern Europe and return to Africa in Autumn.
Raphaelus avis is a temporary habitat for such migratory creatures (a hotel for birds as it were).
It consists of a series of interconnected mesh cones that are attached with a metal wire,
which slithers its way through the perforations of the mesh cones and eventually becomes the connecting strategy that allows raphaelus avis
to cling to the edge of the cliffs in Sorrento, Italy. The metal mesh material of the creature allows
for ventilation and drainage of the habitat, allowing it to be livable for the next bird that
chooses to give its wings a rest. As an evolution of raphaelus platystern and raphaelus tenaci, raphaelus avis demonstrates its variability by
providing different sizes of cones (AKA nests) for the different types of birds that migrate through Italy. This ensures that their stay, no matter what
the duration, is a comfortable one.
